We just buried my uncle, who was on an anti-tank gun in Holland at that time. He showed me a picture of he and the rest of his gun crew at Leeuwarden just after they had a shoot -out with a Tiger tank on the dykes in that area. He always was proud of his service with the RCR's and I had a special bond with him even though I was in the militia.
I have worked with and known a bunch of new Canadians from Holland and they all held the Liberation day of Holland as a very special time for them.

No, not specifically ..... the American Cemetery at Margraten ..... casualties from the operations to liberate France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, etc. are buried there ..... from all branches and units of the armed forces.

One of the guys in our fiddle group was also there when they liberated Holland. He was invited to go back a few years ago with other Canadians who served in Holland as part of a 60th anniversary celebration but he respectfully declined. He said the people were very grateful. He too is in his mid 80s and still going strong. His Birthday is May 8th, V-E Day. Interesting guy when the war stories start.

Are you referring to the US operation, "Market Garden"-? US Army paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division?- dropped into Holland? To this day, I remember arriving at Fort Bragg, NC, Feb "65, three in the morning, fresh out of AIRBORNE at Ft. Benning, start of the Green Beret training at Bragg, walking down the hall of the HQ, seeing the pix of WWII jumps, Salerno, Sicily, Ste. Marie Eglise, Normandy, Omaha Beach, and others...and thinking....THIS is the legacy that we have to live up to? Awesome experience, and proudest time of my life to be part of that 3 percent to complete training and earn the patch on the beret, and be on an A-Team. Di Opresso Libere. Motto of the Special Forces- Liberate from Oppression.

LIBERTY DAY in the NETHERLANDS

Individual citizens in the Netherlands have adopted graves of Allied soldiers that are buried there. They turn out in mass for the Memorial Day services held at Margraten. They are remarkable in their steadfast remembrance of that time and the ones that set them free. Members of the American War Orphans Network (AWON) come together with citizens organizations in the Netherlands to remember our fathers lost in that great struggle. I know that it helps me when I see pictures of how nicely my father's grave is kept. God Bless them.

My condolences to you and your family. I"m glad that so many remember the sacrifice made by your Father in the defense of freedom. Without that, we would not exist.

My grandfather on my mother's side was a Canadian soldier in WW II.He said when he was in Holland he was held up in a families home waiting for more help to arrive so they could drive the german's out.He returned with a group 10 or so years ago and he saw members of that familly and they still reconized eachother after all that time.He remembered that people wondered why at the time they all went over to land in France. He said if they didn't,God help the people. He is still alive in his mid eighties and quite well,if he was here reading this I am sure he would say that your welcome!
