This on an IH 856, I have 15.5 bias with no weights or ballast and a set of clamp on 15.5 duals. I also have a set of 2 - 16.9 GoodYear Radials with at least 75% tread left. What would be a better overall combination when used in a field work situation, say pulling a 24" spring tooth in plowed ground. The 15.5s with 75%ballast and just air in the duals or the single 16.9 x 38 GY radials with 75% ballast. I know there is more tire on the ground with the dualled 15.5s but am I right in thinking the radial could actually have more compaction but better grip because of being a radial?

Thanks Dan

According to this link, liquid ballast in a radial stiffens the sideway and just makes it act like a bias ply and is detrimental to performance.

Go with the duals if for no other reason than the ride.

I have never seen an 856 with 15.5x38's.They were all sold new in my area with 18.4x38's and most were dualed.

HP shouldn't be a problem for 24'... in reply to Dan Swanson, 04-30-2008 08:07:57
First of all I'm located in western Nebraska with fairly light soil. Years ago my grand dad used a JD 4030 (the 856 is very close to the same HP) with 15.5 singles and ballast to pull the same 24' two row Crustbuster I have now in plowed ground. The first time over is the toughest and once that's done then it pulls a lot easier. But with the price of fuel the need for economy starts to play a big part.

That said I'll probable stay with the 15.5s.

Thanks for the great help! I've been around farming all my life, parents and inlaws still farm. Starting at 7 years old I spent many years running a GB MM LPgas 60HP, 5 bottom 14" plows, 21 foot drag spring tooths, life was good. But man have equipment and things changed since.

Thanks, Dan

You must be pretty limited with single 15.5's on an 856.

The others have answered your question well.

You think it will even pull it Dan? Don't think ya have enough horse for a 24' spring tooth in plowed ground, do ya?

Dunno,

Allan

Dan, I think you have to go with the duals, especially in plowed ground, even if not weighted you have way more float and surface contact than any single radial or not.
