on 4/5/08 "Bob" gave a great diaghram of how to wire an alternator. One wire going to the ammeter, and one going through a diode to the "load" side of the ignition switch. I wired my tractor up like the diaghram tonight. With it wired to the "load" side it is getting power any time the ignition switch is on, not just a short blast like if it were hooked to the starter switch. Is this correct? The diode gets pretty warm. I just want to make sure I've got this right.

The diode is JUST FINE, and WILL get a bit warm, if the ignition switch is "ON" and the engine is NOT running, because it is supplying field current to the alternator's rotor. NOT warm enough to hurt it, though.

Once the engine stars, and the alternator begins to charge, field current is supplied INTERNALLY, from the stator and diode trio.

Then, the diode is actually reverse-biased, and will NOT be conducting electricity AT ALL, and will be COOL.

The diode I recommend is rated @ 3 Amps, and you'll NEVER have trouble with it. The diodes some guys use are only rated 1 Amp, and there will be an occasional failure.

How long did you leave the ignition switch "ON" without starting the engine, to make the diode get warm enough to be noticeable?

Thanks Bob. I did use the diode that you recommended. It's larger than they sell at the local Radio Shack but I was able to get the right ones quickly through an on-line source. I was messing with the lights etc. for quite some time so the switch was on for an extended period. I think I have the headlight problem solved so until there is another issue I shouldn't have the switch on (without running the motor) for an excessive period of time. Thanks again for the great picture. For guys like me it's great!

You have two wires coming out of plug in alternator. One runs to the power plug and the other to , say hot side of coil. This one to coil had the diode on it before getting to coil. Radio shack sales them # 1n4408 . Comes in package of 4 and like $3.00 in cost. Buy running the wire off alternator to the coil. This allows the shut off of alternator on when keys of tractor is turned off. I used a 18 ga. wire on this one.
The other wire on alternator plug does down to Load plug and then off it comes a 10 ga. wire that I have run down to starter hot side. Hope this helps you. If you need a picture and info on this setup. Then email me and I will send it.

You can put a resistor or better yet a light in there and limit the current.
