I have a "48 AC, WD and the hydrallics don"t work very well. I"ve adjusted the delay, but they won"t hold the mower at a constant level.
I want to modify the brush hog so I"ll have a minimum height. I was thinking about bolting some wheels to the front....any sugestions?

Bryan, I didn't have time to look this am, but if you click on implement photos on the left side of this page, and search Allis Chalmers, look at photo's # 37 and 38, from Mike in WVA. If you look carefully you will see the piece of iron that fits into the notches on the top of the toplink, hanging down low. This piece is connected to the insides of the 2 lower lift pins by 2 chains.

I have an old piece of equipment from my granddad with a notched toplink like that. I may be able to move that over to the brush hog and set up the chains. In the meantime I ordered some cylinder stops from northern tool & equipment. Tractor Supply did not have them.

What you need is the original A-C part that they used on their bush-hogs. I can't post a picture of it, but it looks like a hybred of a toplink, with notches on the top side, a angled piece of iron that fits in the notches, and 2 chains that attach to the lower link pins on the mower. It looks like the chain set up in the picture shown, except the toplink is solid, with only a little amount of flex, supplied by a short linkage behind the toplink. Find a picture of an Allis Chalmers 160 or 172 rear mounter mower, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try the stablizer set up. Bayou Dave, do you have a photo of your set up?

I measured the length of the exposed hyd cylinder rod with the mower at the correct height. Cut a piece of 1 1/4 inch pipe to that length, then split the pipe lengthwise. Put the 2 halves over the extended cylinder rod, use a hose clamp to keep the 2 pieces together. Only need to use that on one side. I make different length pipes for whatever implement I am using that requires a fixed height.

Can you install "limiter chains", like the 9N/2N Ford folks use to keep the mower rom dropping below the desired working height?

Dangerous situation. in reply to Bob, 04-27-2008 11:52:17
You should not replace the top link with chain on a 3-point system. The rigid top link will keep the mower from flipping up and bashing the back of your head.

I have a similiar setup as that on my teractor to support my weight bracket on the rear of my tractor. Just to take the strain off of the lift.
