I am trying to settle my father’s estate. He had a lot of horse drawn farm equipment and seven or more old farm tractors. Most of the old tractors are John Deere’s. I think there are 2-A’s, 2-B’s, 1-G, 1-D, and 1-D skid engine. There is also a Farmall of some type. There is also an old sawmill in parts. I would like to get some advise on the best way to market this equipment. Is it better to have an auction or list the equipment in separate ads? I must move the equipment and I hate to take it to the scrap yard.

I gotta agree with most of the others here. Auctions bring fair market value. You may be disappointed on a few things but downright surprised on a bunch of others. Every auction I go to has something sell for more than I would have dreamed even asking for it. BUT, the great thing about an auction is at the end of the day, its all sold and your done.

It"s in your best interests to have an auction and to avoid "early sales" where the worms slither in trying to grab something before the open public has a chance to run the price up.

Auction fever takes over and these antique nuts will cut each other"s throats in order to haul your worn out machinery home. Drag out everything you can find in each and every shed....they"ll buy a bucket of rusty bolts if pertains to a tractor. I mean drag out EVERYTHING, no matter if you look at it and think who"d want this junk? Slop some green paint on it and it acts like an opiate on the bidders senses. Trust me on this, I know. Been there and done it.

Lay out a pile of parts and say, I don"t know what these are for....maybe a JOHN DEERE and they bring 3X what they"re worth!

My last 3 tractors have been Deere"s and I hate them just as much as the other new stuff on the market..... most of which is junk. But take advantage of the green and yellow paint.....it"ll fill your pockets with money.

Dear Mark,

Thank you so very much for your advice. I will try to put it to use. The equipment is located in western Kentucky and I have a limited time to get things going. I appreciate everyones input.
Thank You!

I want to thank Verniee and all who responded to the request. I am getting an idea on how to proceed. The equipment is located in western Kentucky and I will need to get some good detailed pictures of all of it. I think scraping anything would be my last option now as I would surely like to see some of it restored. Thanks again for your comments.

Boy, I gotta agree with you on the green paint thing, mark. There is something about it that puts these guys into a trance and they will spend whatever it takes to get it.

Best option depends on your situation. If you are pressed for time an auction is fast -everything sold in one day. If you have the time and inclination to sell yourself you MAY get a little more money in the end , and not pay an auctioneer. Alot depends on condition of this equipment. Either way , if you have the time to get things running, fix tires etc, it'll bring more than "as is " if "as is " = poor, not usable condition . Scrap is high now so if some of it is real rough thats where it will end up no matter how you sell it. I guess it would depend on how much time you have to spend on things and how nearby you are whether you cna sell it yourself. As mentioned you could list a few items on this site's classifieds, craigs list, local paper etc and see what happens . If it doesnt work you can allways call the auctioneer.Good luck .

Thank you JK-NY. Thank you for the good advice. Time is a problem, but I do have a little wiggle room. I have a little better idea of how to proceed. Thank you again for responding.

A well advertised auction with a well informed auctioneer. Call some and get some facts and figures before settling one the one to get the job done. The area you are in can make a huge difference on the valu.

Hey David, Where are ya and whaddya got??? I'm in the market for some horse drawn stuff... there is a market for that AND the tractors. You can always list stuff on here (photo ads) or on ebay. If you list things individually, it'll take some time, but will prolly bring the best returns. PLEASE don't scrap anything!!!

Wyod,

The equipment is located in western Kentucky. The Horse drawn equipment is pretty varied. There are several dump rakes, a couple mowing machines, plows riders and walk behind, single row cultivaters, and disks. It is all in rough condition. lots of years of exposure, most of the wood is gone. I will try to take some detailed pictures. Thanks for your advice!
Dave

A junk yard will never reach the price even the junkiest john deere will get, unless it is just the frame. An auction might me alright but if it rains or something you could lose. If you have a lot of time you could market them yourself to get could prices. Al
