I know this subject has been on here before, but I would like information about coating the interior of gas tanks to inhibit rust. How is this done and who does this type of work? Has anyone out there attempted to do this themselves and what were the results? Thanks.

Pat H.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my questions. I'm in the process right now of getting the problem taken care of. All the comments made a lot of sense.

Kreem is good. Also Kanter products has kits. Think is was 3 steps. Takes a little time. Kanter was about $40when I did it(truck).

I spent a lot of time cleaning out tanks that had that red stuff in them. Sooner or later averything will come loose. I found that if you keep gas in them the fumes from the gas will keep them from rusting.

I've had a few done at a favorite radiator shop with GOOD resuls, so far. I don't know what brand of material they use. I think getting the tank CLEAN before coating can prevent diaster from the coating (and chunks of rust) peeling off later.

They are set up to get then tank CLEAN, and are somewhat reaonable, so I haven't attempted to coat a tank myself.

I've seen quite a few writeups on products from The Eastwood Company, and Kreme. They sure make it soung easy to do it yourself.

There's even a Kreme writeup on this site:

I've restored many vehicles over the years and when an owner wants to keep an OEM fuel tank that has internal rust scale I'd use a sealer. check out this sealer Link

Story is you put a dash of metholated spirits {ethanol} in the tank to disperse the water.
