Rearend noise related to uneven tire inflation?

Good morning folks.

I was moving some stuff yesterday and had to drive on and off of the paved road. I kept noticing a rumble coming from underneath me and steering was a little harder (kinda like when the diff is locked to power both wheels) with the noise louder when steering and accelerating. It was raining and getting dark, so I just hurried home. This morning when the tractor is parked on concrete, one rear tire is noticeably underinflated. I'm hoping this is/was the problem with the noise. Thinking that it would be the same effect as running two different size wheels and the strain it would put on the diff.

Could this be?

Thanks, Dave

Your whine and my rumble are probably close to the same. I'll try to get some air in it this evening. I owe it a going over anyway, this is a good excuse. The short winter days causes it to get neglected a little.

A rumble?? That doesn't sound good to me. I've run odd sized tires for years like that and never had a problem. I'd notice some more whine from the differential, but nothing offensive, and certainly not a rumble. Mabey that's normal on whatever tractor you have, but I wouldn't think so....
Air the tires up even and see what happens, but if I'm getting the right picture in my mind of what you're describing... it doesn't sound good.

I'll get some air in it before I use it again. Maybe this evening if the weather allows it (we're getting the weather you folks were yelling about the last couple of weeks. This is the first time I noticed it, so I hope that was all it is.

Thanks, Dave

Seems like it to me. If the differential only has to make up the difference in a turn it probably doesn"t get much use and maybe gets crudded up. Running it continuously and probably at a higher speed may cause this crud to make noise.

But, thinking more about it, the thing that contacts the road is the tread and the tread didn"t change it"s length (circumference), well maybe a little bit as the flat tire could become concave rather than be convex as it is in normal operation meaning the tread actually went up into the tire and it essentially ran on the sidewall. That could do it as the circumference would now be shorter than it was.
