that has gears on it so I can remove a nut that is torqued onto the end of the shaft. What kind of tool is there to hold the shaft (a couple of the shafts I can't get to so I would have to hold the gear). If the gears are meshed up with another set of gears I could stick a piece of wood or thick rubber inbetween the gears to lock them up to get the nut off, but what if there aren't any other gears that mesh. And then the issue of putting it back together (putting new gears in) and don't want to chip, break, whatever the new gears. Thanks for any help.

I take it that you have the shaft out because its not meshing with other gears. Or is this a shaft with sliding gears if the later slide the gear over to mesh then use a rag. If its out then put a good rag all the way around it and put it in a vise but don't over tighten it. Also get a strap wrench these work great and don't cost a fortune.

Why can't you mesh the gears up and then do the rag thing? If the gears never mesh then you don't need the gears so put a pipe wrench on them.

Wait. The rag will work if it has gears that mesh but what if there are no gears...I'm thinking again.

Like the guy said, use an impact wrench. That is the only way.
