Last night I went to town to pick up my girlfriend's teenage son where he works part time at a Grocery Store. On the way home my pickup truck started coughing and sputtering, and stalled out. I phoned a friend of mine who lives in town and asked him if he had some methyl hydrate, because I had moisture in the gas. While I was waiting for him, I had 16 vehicles go by us, and not one of them stopped to ask if we needed help, or if help was on the way. In town, or out in the country, I always stop to see if any body needs help, or if they are OK. Last fall I came across a single vehicle accident, and I saw the after math of a pickup truck collided with a building. What caught my eye was the dust flying in the air around the building. I stopped and helped the driver get out. What had happened was the driver took a drink of coffee, choked on it, and blacked out while still driving, veered off the road, and into the building. While waiting for the police, 30 vehicles went by, and 1 stopped to see if we needed help. One other time I was going to town, I noticed another farmer laying, an the ground underneath a feed bin, as I went passed. I turned around, and went back to see if he was alright. Turned out that he was just taking a nap. He was out spring harrowing, and felt tired, and needed to take a nap. When I was turning around to go back, I met 4 vehicles, and had to wait for vehicles to go by the lane way I pulled into to turn around. Nobody else stopped. The farmer was grateful that I took the time to stop to check on him. That's why I ask whats wrong with people today.

A Couple of weeks ago in my parts a concerned passer by stopped to help a minor accident he had witnessed. Before he could get out of his vehicle one of the accident victims shot him dead with a shotgun. City cop showed up, the guy shot at him hit him in the neck, he survived, cop shot back and killed the shooter. That puts an end to my stoppin to help. Unless its a woman and child.

here it was the women that stayed by the car until some college boys stopped to help. Then the women's male friends who were hiding in the weeds got up and shot the two college boys and took their car. Both the college boys survived.

Nope don't be lookin for me to help. Way too many people who are looking to take advantage of others good will, And you cannot tell which ones are good and which are bad. Just because they are women dosen't mean anything any more just read the papers.

A few weeks ago I had a load of 70 4x4's shift on a trailer beside a busy 4 lane highway and I had to restack all of them on the trailer. Thankfully, a man stopped to help and it only took a few minutes to get going. He said he had lost a load of lumber a couple of weeks before and someone stopped to help, so he wanted to return the favor. There are still good people around.

Whether or not you stop and assist someone you dont know doesnt make you a good person or a bad person. It just makes you a cautious person.

Just last week, my wife was hauling a load of square hay bales home with our 1 ton truck. Somehow, she lost about half the load on the highway. She told me, that almost immediately, 3 different drivers stopped. One an older gentleman, a 40ish farm wife, and a young man in his early 20's. They helped her reload the hay. There were also some bales that had broken and couldn't easily be restacked. The young man stayed behind, gathered up and loaded the broken bales into his own pickup. Later that evening, he brought them here. This happened about 15 miles from home. I could NOT get that young man to take a dime! He just wouldn't take my money. He said "Oh someday I might need some help along the road too" Those people stopping to help my wife kind of reinforced my faith in mankind!

You know what's really bad - the highway patrol will drive right by you too - at least in Kansas they will. They might stop for an obvious accident so they can issue tickets though.

I'd have to say --- some times your personal safety is involved -- when any one needs help -- they should have the means to call for help or go without -- I have known some who stopped to help -- and was sued for giving the wrong help -- and then -- others have been robed just cause they stopped to help ..

Being Responsible goes a long way for your personal being..

Guess some people, like George Thorogood said, are just "bad to the bone." (maybe not quite that simple). Why do some peoples who live in closely-crowded conditions (China, India) seem to get along quite well with each other, and we here in the U.S. do not? Or is it just a myth that people in these countries get along quite well?

As a side note, there is a new system that will go into service all over the country soon (about 1 or 2 months). If it is not an emergency you will be able to dial 211, for disabled vehicles, etc.

In Mo. dialing *55 from your cell takes you directly to the Highway Patrol, and they can locate you by the gps built into your cell phones. many of the 911 systems do not have access to the gps information

You may ask instead , what's wrong with the WORLD today when one stops to help a stranded female and once stopped her druggy gun slinging boyfreind comes out of the ditch , robs you and puts you to sleep! It has happened quite often. Watch Glen Beck , Nancy Grace or Bill O'Rielly if you really want to see what's wrong with the world. You won't hear any of this on your local news. Caution! You will see the sickest of the sick and what they do to people without the least bit of remorse. And some of them are the people next door! Oh! Almost forgot to ask you. What happens when she gets your lisc. # and you get arrested next day at work for an alleged rape? Yes , peoples lives have been royally screwed up for an act of good sumaritanism. Not saying it's right but might shed a little light on your original question.

Maybe they are like my wife, a big city girl.

I used to get so aggravated when I was farming right along our highway and she would be heading into town. I can't tell you how many times I would wave great big, and she would just motor right on past, eyes straight ahead.

That night I would get on to her and her answer was that she was driving safely and not "gawking" around.

She has no situational awarness!!

I am not quite ready to give up on being a human being, and that means helping others. Last fall I was going to town, and just past the elevator was a small car off the road in a steep ditch, and the car had only 3 wheels on the ground. A young lady had tried turning around after getting lost and went over the edge. As soon as I stopped, another farmer on a tractor stopped, as well as another lady passing by. While we were deciding if we could pull her out safely, a state hiway department truck stopped and turned on his big warning lights. That controlled traffic, so we hooked the tractor up and pulled her car out. Not only was she happy, but she was on her way quickly and without having to pay for a tow. If that had been my daughter in the ditch, I would have hoped someone would help her. Point is , at least 4 or 5 people stopped in a matter of 5 minutes to help. Of course, someone called in an accident from their cell phone and as I was getting to town after it was all over, I passed the police, ambulance and fire truck heading the other way. Saw a fireman later in the day and filled him in-he figured something like that happened. Lots more unnecessary calls these days (especially fire calls) from "good samaritans" with a mobile phone. For volunteer squads in small towns, false alarms put a strain on the ability to respond to real emergencies.

Unfortunatly its the bad people who make it risky to stop. I do sometimes stop and help, like there was a milk truck last summer that hit a bridge and I was the first vehicle to come along. I helped the driver pick up debris out of the road and gave him a ride to get help. I will never pick up a hitch hiker!. When you stop you are putting yourself in a situation where you could be murdered, raped, assaulted, carjacked, robbed, kidnapped, and lawsuits.

About 15 years ago, my uncle, who was a bachelor died in his own yard. The day he died, the man that delivered bulk fuel drove by his place, it was only about 1/4 mile off the main road, and noticed the hood up on his pickup. He didn't think anything strange about it until the next day when he went by and saw the hood still up on the same pickup. He drove into the yard and found him dead in the yard. Was NOTHING he could have done the day before, but he sure felt bad about the whole situation. My uncle was a customer of his and we were too, but we didn't hold it against him for not stopping the first day.

Couple of years back, spotted a 40 something lady driving a minivan on a flat tire, in NW Omaha. Had to think so hard as to how not scare her. Followed her at a reasonable distance, was able to get beside her and motioned for her to open the window at a stop light. Gave her the bad news and then got out of dodge. Could have been some ill guy setting up for evil. Definitely not the same world I grew up in. Greg

Good people can still be found, here for example. I mowed part of the next farmers drainage ditch for him since it gives me an excuse to use the kuboter some more, and it was a beautiful day. Last summer he dropped by when i was mowing it, and he asked me why i was doing it. I told him it just looks better, but i couldnt hold a straight face :-)

Recently in MO a good samaritan stopped to help at a traffic accident and was shot to death by a driver in the accident.A few minutes later he shot a cop and then the shooter was shot to death.

Sadly one has to be very careful whom they help today.

Stopped one morning at the bank on the way to work. Another car was there, woman in the drivers seat. Eyes shut, asleep or unconscious or what? I pounded on the windshield, as it turns out, I woke her up. Did I every get chewed out...Dunno, guess I would go it again.

Two years ago was headed into Vernal UT from Colorado in July, hot. Passed a guy with a flat, bigger truck, 1T PU. Turned around and asked if he had water and lacked any tools, he said he was ok, just a little low on luck.

Either case I could not live with myself if it had turned out different.

In the case of the woman at the bank, I would not call her a lady with her command of the "blue language".

As a young one I need to tell you that I was taught in Driver's Ed not to stop and help, because of carjacking. We were taught to dial 911 on the cell phone and tell the dispatcher that we saw something and would like a police officer to check it out.

I have called 911 twice up here in ND to report folks apparently in trouble in below-zero temperatures, and have been "grilled" by the 911 folks to the point I have about felt like a criminal for calling the incidents in.

The thing is, the HP is out and about, and looking for something to do, so what's the big deal about checking things out???

The one incident, I came upon a minivan SIDEWAYS over the median on a 2-lane rural highway at 3 AM.

I was quite close before I saw it, 'cause of the awkward way it was turned, the side markers didn't reflect my headlight 'til I was pretty close.

Just beyond it is a BIG hill, and someone coming from the other direction would be almost on top of the sideways van before the say it.

It had reservation plates, so WHO KNOWS what was up.

I called 911, and reported the vehicle crosswise in the road. The dispatcher asked about 100 questions, then told me it was not an emergency, and to call thier NON-EMERGENCY number.

I said "It sure as HELL will be an emergency after someone crashes into it", and hung up.

I heard from a guy with an FD pager that law enforcement WAS dispatched.

Turns out the van had hit the ditch and rolled, and landed on it's wheels on the highway. It didn't sound like anyone was hurt. The "natives" had fled the scene, leaving the vehicle that way!

That REALLY PI$$ED me off, to be chewed out for reporting it!

Most people today can't tell the difference between an overheated car vs a car on fire, they just call saying there's a car on fire. And if you're gonna call to report an accident, at least try to get the location right and give the 911 dispatcher an idea of the damage and if there are injuries. Many people today don't bother to even stop and ask if there is someone injured and they don't even know how to tell what mile marker they're near on an interstate. I've always tried to help if I can, even before I became a firefighter. It may be one of your family members that need the help.

Bruce, Don't be too hard on others. Most of them have their heads and their minds somewhere else. And, most people are not trained to observe and assess situations that they see in everyday life. Generally I like to stop and help or at least ask if I can help too, but often people can't see the situation or the possibility of someone in need.

OTH, with all the crap going on on the world you also have to use your powers of observation to see if you really want to stop or not.
