When I was young I didnt think you could own a JD unless you lived on a hill. You still see most of the hand starts in my area with their nose pointed downhill, always worked great on my old A and B. These guys are right, you need the basic three compression spark and fuel. Without any one of these and you will not run. Good luck.

You need to make sure it has spark before any of the other suggestions will work. Remove the cap on the magneto and slide a fine piece of sandpaoer through the points.

1) Make sure the tank selecter lever is set for the tank you have fuel in and fuel is turned on.

2) Open petcocks (located beside spark plugs)

3) Set choke to full on position.

4) Stand facing flywheel and pull flywheel counterclockwise (toward front of tractor) until it starts to get tight.

5) Give flywheel quick hard pull.

6a) If engine fires set choke to halfway postion.

6b) If engine dosen't fire repeat steps 4 and five.

6c) If engine fires and shuts off set choke to halfway position and repeat steps 4 and 5.

7) After engine is running close petcocks, and when warmed up shut off choke.

If after repeated attempts and engine dosen't start make sure you are getting fuel. You should be able to tell by mist coming from petcocks. Hope this helps.

The petcocks (brass valves) are for compression release. You open them for starting. Without opening them you will have a hard time turning it over. For starting, open the petcocks, grab the flywheel and pull it over. Did you notice the inside of the flywheel rim has notches in it to give you some traction when cranking it?

Have fun. I have spent many happy moments and lots of unhappy moments performing the above procedure.

When pulling it over, the top of the flywheel goes to the front of the tractor, turn it over slowly until some resistance is felt, then give it a swift pull.

The best way I have found involves a second person on another vehicle and a chain....

Yep there are tricks to get one to start. On my 1935 JD-B I choke it and rock the flywheel back and forth a few time till I here a swish sound. Then I un-choke it and pull it all the way over. Most of the time it will then start on the first or 2nd pull. Also does in impulse work if it doesn't then it will be a bear to ever hand start it

Yes the impulse is a spring loaded part of a mag which if working as it should will make the spark hotter when hand starting one. If it doesn't work like it should it can be next to impossible to start. When you are turning it over you should be able to here the impulse trip if its working as it should
