Which one?

I am looking at borrowing a tractor from a neighbor to pull a tandem disc around and maybe pull a 4 row corn planter.
He has a IH 756 gasser and a Leyland 270 diesel.
The wife was complaining about the price of diesel but I think that the Leyland would run a lot less fuel through it than that big 6 cylinder on the IH.
Anybody know how they compare?

TomTex;

I totally agree. My brother-in-law has newer equipment for his truck gardening operation. If I borrow something and break it, he's shut down. He's doing it for a livlihood; I'm just playing. Not only that, by having my own stuff I don't have to wait until he has time.

Most likely the diesel will do you better if the horse power is fair. My gas tractor uses gas like it is going out of style and wants more. *S

I would if borrowing a tractor. Have him there with you cause he will know his tractor. Check oil in engine and water in radiator first. Then check tranny fluid to see it is not all cream looking from water and maybe over full. A little humor...if all is ok.. while he is watching.. walk around and kick each tire! Tell him you want to see if tires are up! lol

Neither one. I would not borrow a neighbor's tractor. What if you break it? Are you prepared to spend the money to fix it? What if it spins a bearing, are you prepared to spend $1500-2500 to fix it? Are you prepared to become a sworn enemy to this neighbor or a "borrowing" disagreement? Best to get your own stuff, or hire someone to do the work for you. Tom

I don't know anything about either model that you mentioned,but if the diesel has enough hp to pull it without lugging down,than you deffiniately want the diesel,will cost you bout half to do the same work.We used to have a 410 massey combine with a 292 chevy engine,would burn a tank in less than a day.We now have a 550 massey with a 354 perkins diesel,has the same tank as the old 410 did and you can do more than twice the work on the same number of gallons.Just my 2c,pd.
