Hi I am restoring my A and my steering is loose to about a quarter turn before it does anything. Can I simply tighten the tie-rods (they are a little wobbly) or do I need to mess around with the whole front end.

I have everything back together oil changed just need fresh gas and coolant. Any tip/ precautions before I try to fire her up for the first time in five years.

I need to figure out how to drain the old gas as well. I cant seem to let any gas go in the sediment bowl. Maybe I just don"t know what I"m doing.

Thanks A Lot

I am in the process of rebuilding the steering on my Super A. I would highly recomend replacing anything that had the slightest sign of wear.

When I took mine apart water ran out of the steering box. I couldn't figure it out at first, but I am sure who ever had it before me left it out in the rain and water ran down the steering shaft, past the wore out seal and into the box. So far I am replacing the worm gear, shaft and nut, woodruff keys, gasket, seal, bearings and bushings. It took me 4 hours to get it all apart, I don't want to have to do it again anytime soon.

Here is a site that might help:

Hope this helps.

Push it outside before trying to start it.

You just never know...

If there is slop in the steering.. ALL worn components need to be repaired.. slop magnifies slop. A lil slop in the box times a lil slop onthe tie rod times a lil slop in a wheel bearing.. etc.. etc.. etc.. It all figures in to total slop.

Are you sure the sediment l-shaped lever is turned out for open you mite have to unscrew the whole assy from the tank to clean. Just keep looking at your steering assy when you turn the wheel for play in different areas ends at the spindles center where they both hook arm coming out of gearbox and like other post end play in the steeringshaft going into the steering sector.

Look at the shaft where it enters the casting, if it moves in and out when turned, the wrm bearings need attention.
If the looseness is not there, look at the steering arm where it attaches to the sector shaft. This has been often an issue (woodruf key wear.
If fuel does not come out, the inlet is probably plugged. Run a wire up through the little pipe. If it is rusted up, Look in the archives here, or on FarmallIH above for fuel tank cleaning, 2 posts a week, take your pick. JimN
