Help me out with some advice, you guys so wise in the ways of electrons. I don't run my 6Volt Ferguson TE-20 often enough to keep up enough charge in the battery to start the tractor. It starts just fine when pulled by my pickup. Can I safely use the pickup 12Volt battery for a jumpstart? I have installed an aftermarket solenoid which should probably be tough enough to pass along 12-volt current, but what about the starter windings? Many thanks in advance. Tex

Many thanks for your eye-opening(and possibly eye-saving) advice. I waited till my wife got home and had her drive the truck as usual. After taxes I'd like to convert to 12 volt. Thanks again! Tex

I would assume you park the tractor somewhere near an electrical outlet. A 6 volt trickle charger isn't very expensive. Nither is a 100 foot extesion cord...

I was sitting on my Ford 960 (battery under the 'dash' right up near me) when it blew up. I will do what I can to never have that experience again. Ever.

Just to throw in my two cents. Check your battery cables. A 6 volt system requires larger cables to carry current than 12 volts do. Just make sure your cables are at least 1 gauge or larger. This might help in not having to jump at all.

I had a charger on a 6 volt battery on a 44 Farmall H one time. Had the charger in 6 volt start mode. When I hit the start button, a portion of the top of the battery blew off just missing my face. I fortunately had my head turned. away. Wear safety goggles!!!

If I were to try to jump a 12 volt battery to a 6 volt system I would NOT let the battery charge. I would hit the starter immediately and get disconnected as soon as the rig started. I thought I was the only guy that had a battery blow up that way. Man what a scary experience!! There was pieces of battery stuck in the ceiling of the shop. The fireball must have been 4 or 5 feet in diameter. Be Careful.

Yeah it's happened to several of us through the years.
These guys who tell you to do it this way probly plug their 110 volt battery chargers into a 220 volt plug in. Same difference only a circuit breaker will flip and save your life maybe. When you go 12 volt to 6 volt, that battery is gonna come looking for you quick, quick as in kaboom.
The only way I can get it to work anywhere close to right is to touch the 12 volt to the starter selonoid of the 6 volt system and crank it that way. Battery to battery it will explode.

disconct your 6 volt battery ,jump start the tractor with your 12 volt Batt, the gen will keep it running till you hook your 6 volt batt up again. 12 volts will not hurt you stater.Don't forget to hook up your 6 volt batt after you get it started

I personally wouldnt do it but there is a way.First dont hook the jumper cables to the battery.Find a good ground on the tractor and hook up the neg lead.Turn on the switch on the tractor and hook the positive to the STARTER.It wont hurt the starter but the sparks it may create may ignite some fumes floating around.Only problem would be if there isnt enough juice in the battery to fire the thing off.If you do this,PLEASE BE CAREFUL

Jon is correct. Very dangerous. Starter wise, it is fine. I have converted my 3 Farmall Hs to 12 volt and those heavy duty Delco starters just spin faster.

Boosting a 6V battery with a 12V is very risky. The 6V battery must be absorbing well over 100 amps charge. I have seen them begain to gas so badly that after about 30 seconds they start to blow acid out the cap vents. There is a very good chance of exploding the 6v battery. Please do not do this, there is too much chance of getting hurt by flying battery acid or case parts. It would be best if you could find a way to charge that battery, so you do not have to boost or tow it to start. Also letting that battery set whild run down is very hard on the battery.

i would suggest that you charge the battery for a while with your pu but disconnect before you try to start it
