to hear about how a land owner that sold off his equipment years ago is bidding on some smaller stuff, so he can farm his 160 acres again, that ONLY a small acreage farmer would need, is out bidded by the BIG farmer that rents his land, then he see's that same equipment he was out bidded on, loaded on a truck and sent to the scrap yard. Is that greed or what.

No sense in getting upset about that kind of thing . There's more people that care about money than the heritage . I am with you though if it helps . I barely make a living in construction and have to listen to all these big farmers whine that they can't make a half million dollars a year ( I earn about $30,000 gross ) . All the ones that say " why not bid more ? " are the big farmers . I have a budget and they obviously don't . I can sometimes scrape together a couple hundred dollars to hit an auction and get something I want or need but routinely get outbid by scrappers and those that part out perfectly good equipment . It's only sad for those of us that weren't born into wealthy farm families . Otherwise it's " just business " . I think you'll get more criticism than sympathy here . ...Randy

Randy-IA,.... I know exactly what you mean, I worked 40+ years in construction just to keep my small 160-acre farm afloat.

In all of those 40+ years, I never heard one word of encouragement from my big-farmer neighbors,... so, I don't pay any attention to "them" when they whine about things being tough, heck,... maybe they'd like to "trade places" with me (but, I ain't had any "offers" from them YET! HA! HA!).

I will never understand how someone being out bid on anything at an auction could cause hard feelings. I have never seen anything sell at a farm auction that was the last item on earth. I have been out bid on machinery item several times before I was able to buy it at what I wanted to pay. It is called free choice. You choose to stop bidding not the auctioneer.
If a person does not want competition go buy new or thru classifieds.

Maybe I"m missing something here, but if I was outbid on something small by the big farmer that rents my ground, and he scrapped it, there"d be a major falling out and he wouldn"t be farming my ground anymore. So he jacks me and I jack him. He makes about $200 on scrapping equipment and I take away his opportunity to grow $120,000 gross dollars worth of 5 dollar corn.

It is nice to see guys getting back in though! I'm not to worried about the equipment, theres plenty 1960's, 70's and 80's stuff out there and fairly easy to work on.

I'm sure the real big guys don't like it, but its good for America to see more active 200 acre farms. That way instead of being a number in a huge 2000 acre farm, another owner, plus his relatives or neighbors get the opportunity to make a little money and learn/experience farming.

There is NOTHING good that comes out of voluntarily getting out! Look around, how many people that sold off their ground in the 1970's and 1980's are seeing the benefits? The money was spent long ago and there is nothing to show for it. Or the land still provides income, but two or three relatives or neighbors lost the opportunity to experience farming. Anytime I see a complete equipment auction I cringe.

Auctions are all about the items going to the highest bidder. An auction sets the REAL price whether its high or low because at the end of the day it has to be paid for no BS.What should the auctioneer do stop the bidding and say well thats enough for that item guys? Who would get it then? I'm sure the seller wouldn't think thats a good idea.Just keep bidding the scrap guy will stop sooner or later.

Your point being?

It's called an auction, should the seller get screwed because the buyers agree not to pay full price?

If someone did that to me, I'd immediately find a new tennant for 1 year and at the next auction have a neighbor bid for me.

Guess it may just be that I am the dumb one, but I cannot understand your post. The pronoun "he" gets me lost in the way it is written. I cant tell who rented land from whom, who bought the tractors, who got out bided, and who sold them for scrap. Tom

I have seen many times where a junk yard will out bid anyone. I went to a acution a while back where 3 or 4 junk dealers showed up. Every thing went way over priced.

When you consider that the tractor can be pieced out one piece at a time it does cover the cost but makes it hard for someone trying to buy a old junker for fixing up and using.

I am throughly convinced that an auction is the very last place to buy anything, be it a clothes pin or a tractor.

Just way, way too much money out there; no matter what the doom and gloom lefties say.

Witness the Bridgeport scrapyard auction of last week. Stuff that went in there at a dollar came out in the thousands to some "collector". :>)

You're much better off finding your old equipment, like combines, for a good deal and then having all your friends send you all the parts you need cross country, so you can fix it up like new. LoL. More people should think like this. Dave

Did he bid higher than the scrap value? If not the other farmer was actually making money on the purchase. Sound business sense.

If he did bid higher than the scrap, he could just as easily made a trip to the scrap yard and purchased the equipment from them. I have never seen a scrap yard that wasn't willing to sell items before they cut them up.

Business is business and I have seen a lot of people pissed of at loosing auctions to scrap dealers. Scrap prices are high and many pieces of equipment now have a higher scrap value than they do a retain value. Its just a hard idea to swallow.

The big scrap yards will NOT sell anything out, only the small 1 man type of yard will.

I guess it depends on the operation. The bigger operations around here (probably 50 employees), will sell scrap to anyone that is willing to pay $.30 per pound. I've brought home some decent finds that were brought in for scrap. It's important to catch the stuff before they bulldoze it into a pile though.

Thats business.

How many times have you seen a big company buy out a small business, close the doors on the small one they just bought, sell off the equipment and sell the building to who ever to be use for another purpose.

If you or I get upset cause we got outbid at an auction, we better quit going to auctions. Cause 8 times out of ten I get out bid.

Gary
