Just thought I'd post a little reminder for ya'll to check and service your fire extinguishers and other safety equipment regularly. With summer coming on and what I expect to be alot more dry weather coming fire prevention needs to be on everyones mind. Just remember of you don't keep them serviced they might not work whern you really need them. I got caught off guard the other day while cutting parts off an old crane for a friend. The machine had been setting under an oak tree for quite a few years and was full of dry leaves. I had wet things down with water from a faucet about 200 feet from the machine and thought I was OK. Turned out the water wet the top few layers of leaves down but since I didn't literaly drown it the leaves underneath were still dry enough to light off. Not having planned for it to catch fire when wet I hadn't gotten any extra water so I grabbed the small disposable extinguisher I keep in the cab of the truck. It's been riding around for several years and still showed good on the guage. When I pressed the lever I got a FFFFFT and just a little powder. As you can imagine that was not nearly enough to knock down the flames much less put the out. I figure it rode around so long the dry chemical inside vibrated down and packed too tight to disperse. So I was forced to grab the big one I keep in the back and thankfully it worked. Fortunatly I do try to keep it serviced regularly by turning it upside down and hitting it with a rubber mallet to stir up the dry chemical inside but I never thought about that with the smaller one, I just took it for granted it would work. Too I discoverd after the fact that many of the portables sold for vehicle use (like the one I had) are only rated as BC (flamible liquids and electrical) and not ABC which includes the A rating for wood, cloth, etc. I know most of us that carry one will be just as likely to use it on a grass fire or soemthing of that nature as we would for a machine fire, and the BC simply isn't rated for that. So, first make sure you have the right extinguisher, and that you regularly check and service your all your safety equipment. If you do nothing else sure make your fire extinguishers are ready to go. I got lucky and the larger one put the fire out before it grew too large which gave me the opportunity to get alot more water and make sure it didn't happen again. For me it's lesson learned because I might not get so lucky the next time... and you might not either.

Just get you one of these. An AutoFyrStop fire bomb.
Use it 3 ways or so the instructions say.
Bombing, sprinkling or automatic. Sitting in its holder it has a fused link that if it gets too hot the fuse breaks so hammer hits the glass nipple and goes dingalingaling on the makeshift bell as the Carbon Tetrachloride gushes out.
This was in a house I bought one time.
Always liked it and have it in the kitchen as an ornament.
Good post about fire safety btw. Always timely advise to check the fire extinguishers.
I just checked the dry powder one I keep just off the kitchen. Haven't looked in a year but the needle is still in the green zone.

Be careful with those carbon tet bulbs. They operate by taking the oxygen out of the air. It starves the fire. Fire needs three things to burn. By taking out the oxygen, you also could cause a problem for your family by this thing going off. I've removed several of these from basements and attics of homes. Bad stuff!

I've got a similar one, called a RED COMET, I'd have to carefully dig it out, it's clear glass, red liquid inside, does make for a neat ornament, an artifact I found in our old victorian farmhouse. I'm not sure how common they are, it was in a box with shredded news paper, when I found it, I safely re-packed it years ago and put it in a drawer in my garage for future reference, it's got some similar hardware like you describe, on the one end, I'd have to dig it out and take a photo, I hate handling it, reminds me of a grenade, as there is spring loaded device on it and I have no clue what chemical is inside, that is a nasy chemical CT isn't it ? Same thing used in dry cleaning, no idea, not a chemist, but it sounds like just like the chemical the armenian dry cleaner down the road hates hearing brought up, we used to really get him going sometimes LOL !

NC Wayne is right on with that reminder, I had to torch off a few parts in a junkyard last fall and there was a giant oaktree with limbs over the truck, those leaves are hard, dry and take a lot to soak, I had to clear the entire area and still had some on fire I did not see, nice enough to let me take my own parts off, used my cutting rig and I could have started a nasty fire if I was not careful.

Belly pans with oil soaked dirt, break a hyd hose on a hot engine and all the rest that happens similar, excellent reminder, may save the day just having an extinguisher that works, I have to remind my customers to do it, one has a 100 x 100 shop, and I put new ones in there over 1 year ago, really is a good reminder, best remind this customer to get em serviced.

I looked these up on Ebay myself a few years ago.
That's right, they're called a grenade not a bomb.
They don't sell for a whole lot - maybe $40.
Of course there are folks who collect these things. There were several different brands and styles of them. Your's is a real nice color.
Handling the bulb is ok but taking it in or out of the hanger gives you the creeps. You see that spring and hammer held back by the flimsy fuse and hope for the best.
Carbon Tet has been banned I believe. Carcenogenic?
I always figured if my kitchen get hot enough to set it off a little Carbon Tet is the least of my problems.
They do make a nice conversation piece. I would hang yours.

Here is a Red Comet, it's missing the springloaded hardware, but identical to mine, good ole ebay, should have known there'd be one listed.

I've been meaning to round mine up and get rid of them. Had the for years and years and years and the meters all show good, but I don't trust them. Like yours, I'm kind of worried that I might need one, pull the pin, squeeze...squeeze...squeeze, "Oh nooooo". Thanks for reminding me.

Hey, as a story that I should be ashamed for, but am not really. Decades back, me and the boys had just become of legal partaking (drinking) age piled in one of their fathers Caprice Estate Wagons, and hit the road for the taverns. And being new at the game as many young punks do, and we were no exception, we over did it, if you know what I mean. Well, in the back his father had a fire extinguisher and one of us (not me) that had over done it, found the fire extinguisher, pulled the pin and aimed at everyone and squeezed, and aimed and squeezed a lot more as we were bombing down the road to the next tavern, and the windows were closed. His fire extinguisher worked real good too. I don't recall that we got served at that tavern when we walked in, and I know that his father never let him use the Caprice Estate Wagon again. We all lived through that, and we're all a lot more older and more sensible now, so we don't do that much anymore, unless the wives or girlfriends are riding with us.

Back in the old days, when you could do most anything, I had an old steel scuba bottle made into a CO 2 extinguisher. It has a big "horn" on the end of the hose. I mean it will flat put out a fire. Even though it is not designed for grass fires, I had the opportunity to use it once when a neighbors house was in danger. The fire dept hadn't gotten there yet and about 8 or 10 neighbors were fighting it, but couldn't hold it. I got in front of the fire line and flat put out about 50 yards of flame. I was impressed.

It still has a place of honor in my shop

I shake my dry chemical fire extinguishers up a couple of times a year. I have them all over the place. One in each vehicle, one on my tractor, 2 on each floor of the house, 3 in my main workshop and one in each shed.

How about those little aresol can looking extinguishers they sell now and claim they are great on them ?

I just wanted to ad that most Fire Dept. will check your ext. free of charge. Certain times of the year they may even service it free. Get you an ABC and take the guess work out weather it is the right one fore the fire.

The extinguisher in the apartment I rented was last serviced in 1968. Needless to say, we provided our own. It was also back in a corner closet beside/behind the range. Right where you would not be able to reach it when you needed it! Thanks for the tip, I am going to check mine now.
