The past several months I've occasionally seen some car tracks up to my pole shed, which is on a piece of property about 1/4 mile from the house. It's where I keep my JD Model B, brush hog, and a couple old cars. I usually keep the B pretty well filled with gas, but seemed like it was burning an awful lot for the little bit I used it over the winter. Finally put 2 and 2 together and realized the car tracks were likely those of a gas thief. Figured since it had warmed up a bit, and I wasn't going to be using the B for a few weeks, I'd pour five gallons of water into the tank. Easy enough to drain out, plus the sediment bowl would catch any remaining drops of water that might remain once the water served it's purpose. Well, last night there was a poor fella stalled just down the road a hundred yards, seems his new-fangled fuel injected Ford pickup wouldn't run on water. I called my lawman neighbor to swing by and have a chat with the fellow, he spotted a siphon pump and a couple of empty gas cans in the back of the truck, couldn't charge the fellow for anything 'cause no proof, even though the old B was missing quite a bit of water from the tank. But I think he got the message, and doubt he'll be back suckin' any more liquid out of my machines. Not sure how much it cost him to get his pickup running again, but probably a little more than the cost of a few gallons of gas would have. With gas going up like it has lately, have any of you been getting fuel stolen from your machinery?

They won't get much from my tanks as they are all on empty most of the time.

They just nailed a guy in Phoenix a couple weeks ago for stealing 1500gal of gasoline.

He had a pick-up with a enclosed trailer with a tank inside the trailer. He pulled over the tank fill openings and another partner opened the trailer floor door and began pumping 1500gal of gas.

All was fine but the theifs had forgot about the island cameras of the fuel stop. The cops had a clear view of his license plate and a video of him standing outside of the trailer waiting for the inside man to get done pumping gas.

#1) How are you gonna sell 1500gal of gas? Would you really buy gas from your neighbor at $2.5gal?

#2) If you had that much of a demand for 1500gal of gas in a year, then you must be making money with using 1500gal in a year and your going to risk getting caught for $5000 worth of gas?

I just can't figure out why this guy would even bother with stealing 1500gal. And it's not easy too keep 1500gal of gasoline in Phoenix during the summer heat.

1500 gallons with a tank and trailer and all would be a pretty heavy load behind a pick up. They can't have been too smart. A few years ago someone up here stole a semi with a trailer full of beer. It would probably be a little easier to sell. They found the truck and empty trailer a couple days later. It must have been planned for a while. With the price of gas, I bet a lot more people will try to drive away without paying.

One time a few years back. My sister inlaw run out of gas going up a hill road. So she got picked up and on the way back for car with gas. A hose was seen and can beside the car. Hose in tank still. So four of us went into the near bye weeds and hid and waited. Soon on a side road that was about 100 ft. away from car. A small yellow Volkswagon pulled up and stop. Letting another guy out who went to see if gas can was full. Well just as he picked up can and looked into it for gas. We all yelled and with a few words of nasty to him. Begin to chase him down the hill with him holding gas can in one hand and hose in the other. Running like crazy to the yellow bug. But the guy in the bug seen we were gaining and yelling what we were going to do to him..lol took off driving away and the other guy screaming for him to stop! But he did not stop for him! The other guy threw can and hose down and headed down in field of tall grass and hid. So we did what is called a hand to hand search and there that poor slob was in a ball like figure. lol lol We grabbed him by his long hair and pulled him up as each one of us took turns beating the crap out of him. lol lol We did not call the police cause we figured he had learned his lesson well. But did tell him to tell that other guy in the yellow bug. That we would get him and do him worst then he got from us. lol lol You know we did look for the car a long time. Figured he left the state or sold the car to an out of towner. ha ha ha This is a true story! We still talk about that poor guy we caught trying to still gas and have our laugh.

Keeping a few geese penned up near the gas barrel works pretty well. If anything comes around they start honking loudly. One of the neighbors had trouble with trespassers driving on his place, usually in the same spots. He took some old T posts and sharpened the blades on them and laid them in the tall grass. We could see where several tires had been changed.

A guy I work with backed his Bronco against the electric fence. Two nights later the heard a loud scream, which awoke his wife. When she yelled for who was out there there, there was no response. She proceeded to fire several shots from a 44 mag in the air and they never returned.

I bought a kb3 international truck from an old feller and when we picked it up he had to find the gas tank as he had it out years ago to clean it and never put it back in. When we pulled the truck out of the shed, there was a red rubber hose caught in the gas filler pipe and hanging down out the bottom where the tank used to be. LOL. Somebody was suckin air!

The best Gas thief story I ever heard was wehen I lived in OR. a guy I worked with ahd a Winnebago type of thing. He went to the mountains or such on weekends in it. He needed more holding tank capacity , so he converted one of his gas tanks to a sewer holding tank and left the filler neck and such on it. He came out one day and found a length of garden hose and a trail of vomit going down the lane.

Back in February, there was a post about somebody having gas stole from there place, and wondered what he could do. Somebody mentioned about his parents having, I think Chinese geese in a pen not too far from the out buildings, to deter theft. If you could fence off an area, so that the geese could be near your tractor, and shed, It sure as heck scare somebody out of their wits, especially in the dark. I haven't yet had this problem. All my machinery is stored inside, behind closed doors.
Bruce.

It's been a couple years now, but one night I woke up and haerd something like a car drive into the place. So, I got out of bed and put on some clothes to go and see who was outside. There was a man siphoning "gas" out of one of the gravel trucks (it runs on DIESEL!). I asked him what he was doing, and he said his car ran out of gas. I told him he could keep filling his can and fill up his car and be on his way. He didn't get more than a quarter mile away when his car died on him. Gas engines don't run on diesel all too well. There are only 3 things at our place that run on gas and that is my wife's car, our lawn mower, and one antique tractor.

I remember one time that our gas tank seemed to be running out all the time, and since half the equipment ran off of diesel we knew that someone was getting into the gas tank.

Just so happened that both tanks ran out about the same time, so we switched them. Filled the gas with diesel and diesel with gas. The next day the guy across the road was having problems getting his car to run right, and it was sure smoking a lot.

Grandpa stopped and asked him what the problem was. He told us that he must have got some bad gas or something out of the wrong pump. Grandpa told him that we had been having problems with people stealing our gas, and the next time he was just going to shoot somebody instead of just switching tanks. The guy just lowered his head and we left.

Father in law switched tanks like that a few years ago. Next morning there was a car a couple hundred yards down the road smelling suspiciously of diesel. Called the law, and they wouldn't do anything about it. Well, he got his revenge anyway....

I knew a guy who drove an old Checvy coupe, during WW II. He had a gas tank in his trunk, and the regular one usually had a gallon of gas and a gallon of water in it. He said a lot of the locals were getting water in their tanks, and he had to refill the regular tank every week! With water and a quart of gasoline!

Yeah, I've had the same thoughts, but anything happens he's going to be the first suspect. My lawman neighbor put the word out to the rest of the force here, they got all the particulars on the fellow. He keeps doing what he's been doing, he'll get caught in the act sooner or later.

Had kinda the same problem. Had to reposses a vehile cause the boy would pay, the next week I come back to the farm and my Freightliner has the wires cut under the sleeper. Was a little worried he added something to the fuel but looks like that was all he did.
I counted myself lucky. Course the law wouldn't do anything.

Older middle-aged fella. I imagine he's a casualty of the economy, probably laid off and doing what he can to survive. But a crook is a crook in my book. I'm sure the fellow could be making a legal living, cause there are jobs to be had around here, just that some folks won't work if it's too "hard". I imagine that I'm supporting him one way or the other anyway, but I'd rather do it through paying my taxes than getting ripped off. Kinda the same thing if you think about it.....
