Would like to know if anyone can recommend on a tractor to pull my J.D. 30 combine with. Can buy a J.D A that has a broken block for $800.00 which I can fix myself .Is that a good deal and will it pull my combine?Or I can get a 60 for $2000.00 that has not ran for 7 years ,but its froze up can't turn flywheel.Gentleman also has another A that ran 2 years ago he wants $2000.00 which the flywheel turns freely. The following tractors also have stuck engines ,but are for sale for $1500.00 A,B,G,H,M,MT which of these tractors would be the best for use with the combine for light feild ,fairs and parades .One more thing which would be the best bang for the buck? Thanks Blaine

There was a live PTO kit for the A but I have never seen one installed, about as scarce as hens teeth. The 60's do not all have live PTO either and Possibly not all with live hydrolics, and the 60 did not all have power steering. And Live PTO is not needed for combine work. Run hundreds of hours with AC PTO combines behind J D A or B tractors, also Ferguson 30 without live pto, put back of ford 4000 with independent pto once for a couple of hours, put it back on the JD B again.

As I said earlier, I ran a JD A with a 30 combine. I also ran a 90 Allis Chalmers with an Oliver 550 tractor with independent PTO, which worked MUCH better. However, combines can be operated with a non live pto tractor.

On the tractors you mentioned: I also had to rebuild the motor on the A. At that time, the bare block was availiable from Deere. If you notice on the 2 cyl JDs the block is a separate piece from the crankcase so the rebuild is relatively inexpensive. On the one I had rebuilt, the dealer did the numbers and it was cheaper to bore out the block and buy new pistons and rings than to buy a new bare block.

The 60 is supposed to have independent PTO. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. They also had 3ph hitch availiable and live hydraulics. On the A, the pto has to be turning for the hydraulics to work, as I recall. I don't think much of the $2000 price for that tractor with a stuck engine. Of the other tractors you mentioned, The B might be a little small to do a good job pulling the 30, the M and MT much to small, and the G plenty strong enough. The G is the same basic design as the A, just bigger.

Everybody else is right. You're gonna be REAL sorry if you try to run a PTO driven combine with a tractor without live power. Do you know how hot and dusty it's going to be when you're out there hour after hour trying to unplug that combine? If you're dead set on a Deere, get a 60. I'd still go with an Oliver 77 on it if it was me. Spent many a summer day with that combination. But,without live power or a motor on the combine....don't post in July complaining. Some things just don't go together. You might as well hook a 3 point hitch plow up with a log chain behind a tractor without a 3 point and try to plow with it. You'll have about as much luck.

If you want to be "correct" that 30 isn't a historical match for the A anyway. They would be for a 60-620-630. For the A it would be correct with a model 12A or 25 combine, depending on the year of the A.

If the combine is PTO powered, a tractor with live or independent PTO would certainly be a great advantage. Actually, almost essential in my opinion.

Personaly, I would take a chance on the JD A that hasn't run for 2 years. Offer him $1200.00, and see what happens. You can always go up, but you can't come down in price. Plenty of power to run your combine.
