I know its very off topic, but still. Im trying to set up a printer/fax/copier for my dad whilst im up here. We got the printer/copier set up, but we cant figure out the fax. I know some about computors but not that much. We have this to deal with, the back of the thing has two phone ports, one for in and one for out. We only have in hooked up, and would out being un used have an affect here?? I know its kind of a dumb question, but i have no clue. Thanks yall!! This is from the manuel from it.

Will affect nothing. You have a jack in the wall where you would normally draw diatone from if you had a set plugged in, but now you've got a fax machine plugged in instead of a set. The only thing is that it just happens to be the only phone jack in the room and you have both a fax and a set you'd like plugged in so you can use the fax when needed, or the phone when needed. Plug the set into the out, and can use the fax when needed, or the set through the idle fax machine when needed. Think of the out jack as a highway...its there to drive on if or when you need to, but doesn't stop being a highway if you don't drive on it. Hurts nothing.

Most of the newer fax machines are set up so they can automatically pick up a fax but will let the call go through to an answering machine if it's not a fax. What it does is to pick up on an incoming call while pretending to ring. If the fax machine detects the beep of an incoming call, it goes ahead and starts handshaking. Otherwise, it lets the call be picked up by the answering machine.

The short answer is that it makes no difference if you have no answering machine. But if you do have an answering machine it needs to be on the output jack of the fax machine. Otherwise the fax machine and answering machine will both pick up the call.

Once you get dial tone on the line and hook it to the fax. If you have a stand alone answering machine it needs to be hooked into the Phone not wall port on the fax machine, so it can intercept the call after the answering machine picks it up. Fax machines send out a certain tone which your fax machine can hear after the phone is answered and go online to recieve the fax.

hope that was not too fuzzy.

Are you in a business office, or at home? If it is business and the line is digital, it won't work. It needs to be an analog line. Simple test is to take an analog phone (home phone) and plug it in to the phone jack, see if you get a dial tone.

If you get a dial tone, make sure you don't need to enter a prefix in order to dial out.

Good luck.

IF you"re using a SINGLE phone line... you need the wire with TWO metal contacts in the plug as opposed for four contacts (only used for an extra ground line).

forgot to add you should be able to attach a phone to that port and get dial tone. I would also double check the wall jack with a phone and make sure you have dial tone there also.

Sometimes there is a jack for a two line phone which you shouldn't use as it looks at another set of wires besides the center pair.
