4020 Hydraulic Pump Question

The hydraulic pump (under steering) started leaking through the seal.

1. Does the entire pump need to be taken apart to replace the seal in the front of it or can it be done from the front by removing the snap ring.

2. If it is the packing that failed behind the seal, can it simply be repacked (if the shaft is worn)?

3. Any pointers for taking this out? For sure does the pump need to fully come out or any other work saving tips? Thanks

Sorry about the post on the hyd. pump,i did not read the question real good. Bob post about the st. valve is correct. If you take the valve off and reseal it don't mess with the adjustment screws and it MIGHT work but if it needs adjusted you need a dial indicator & adj. blocks. Don

You will most likely have to remove the pump so it can be taken apart to replace the inner seal it will not do much good to just replace the outer seal. Make sure the bleed line from the pump to the trans. is not pluged or pinched off.
If shaft is groved real, real deep might need to replace. Some pumps have a quad ring with a back up washer And some have teflone seal if it has a quad ring seal you can get by with a deeper grove
in the shaft. Don

Re: 4020 Steering Valve in reply to Farmall Don, 03-31-2008 09:32:34
1.) It's called the "steering valve".

Third Party Image

2.) Replacing the outside seal (#9) is PROBABLY only a temporary fix, as there is an "O"-ring, (#19) DEEP inside the steering valve. Rebuilding that valve is NOT for the faint of heart, or the inexperienced, and the number of DEERE mechanics every-day familiar with the setup procedure is dwindling.

3.) To do the job correctly, the valve has to come out of the dash, then be disassembled.

4.) Since I am basically lazy, I WOULD try the external seal FIRST, unless the tractor is being torn down for a major restoration, or it is absolutely critical that that leak be stopped the first try! Good Luck!
