Today I saw a man break one one the laws of physics. I was at at fuel station at cashtown, Ontario where the guy beside me managed to get 25 litres of diesel into a 20 litre container. I was right beside him waiting for the pump and asked to shake his hand. Needless to say I decided to go get my diesel elsewhere. I guess we aren't getting raped enough by the fuel companies and the government, the paki running the station wanted a share too.

I stopped at a station once where I had shopped quite often. I had a pair of 5 gallon containers to fill then I was going to fill my truck.

When the meter rolled over 6 gallons and my first 5 gallon can was only about half full, I put down the nozzle and went inside.

I told the owner about the problem and he came outside in apparent disbelief. While he was making denials and waving his arms he reached under the front of the meter, just above the glass and flipped a switch.

I stopped what I was doing and don't remember exactly what I did next, but I bought no more gas from him, shop elsewhere and called the state weights and measures and reported him.

If he doesn't want people stealing his gas all he has to do is require customers to pre-pay!

Geeze you guys, comon' now.

Guess you haven't spent a lot of time around diesel fuel?

This is a totally normal occurance. Diesel swells and contracts like crazy depending on the tempreature.

Heck, you can even see it happen by watchin' your tractor's fuel guage as the day heats up.

Sounds like someone needs to start making '5 gal'
cans that only hold 4.8 gals would make the conspiracy theory crowd feel like they were getting a great deal.

I had a 34 ford pickup when i young and not as smart as I am now. It didn't have a gas gage or didn't work or never looked at it can't remember. Well i ran out of gas and then got a gallon then went in and filled it up took 15 gallons total.
The next time I ran out of gas in the same place wouldn't you know it I did the same thing but it only took 10 gallons. Now where did he put that other 5 gallons of gas.

Hi NDH,

I HAD a friend once that owned a mini-mart and a white boy. Top in State lotto sales, pumped 60k gallons month, did $1000/day in special mixed soft drinks.

When he got ready to retire, he and his wife had to fire there help and work 14hr shifts to pump the money back into the "books" so they could sell it at full value.

In the mean time, he had watched a gas pump repairman. From that he was able to install a switch under the counter that when on would short the pump sale 1tenth of a gallon or about 6k/gal/mth in his pocket.

One thing he forgot when he was telling me this after he retired, was I had also bought a few tanks of gas from him.

I asked him to leave and never come back! He died two years latter on the golf course.

Jerry cans hold more than their rated capacity. Most have a line on them for the rated capacity. It's not hard to fill a can right to the top and get 25 or more litres in a 20 litre rated can. The gas pump is supposed to have a weights and measures Canada sticker on it that's dated when the pump was certified accurate. I think it's done every year by law.

Report them and see what happens. I know there are some stations around here that I just won't go to because of things like this. Also a couple of different stations here that have special prices taped to the pumps for "cash only" sales.
They don't inspect the meters for accuracy nearly as often as most people think.

I've also heard an increase lately in the number of full-serve stations trying to short people and hoping they don't look at the pump before paying.

You are in Canada; right? Go online to Service Canada, Consumer Affairs, Weights and Measures Division. Their fill up will cost him big bucks, and they will be there within days, and they may already be watching.

There was a situation like this in Nova Scotia, 15 years ago. I phoned and reported buying 15 more litres of diesel than my tanks held. They told me I wasn't the only one who called. He assured me they were doing their own fill ups at several outlets of the same company. Within months the company were in court and were fined in excess of $100,000.

Allan: I just wanted to let him know there are ways to deal with it in Canada. I expect you have much the same in the US.

I will say this, it's was the only government department I ever saw act with haste, other than the Income Tax dept., when they wanted my (their) $23,000. PDQ.

Read about a station on 127 in Hudson, Mich. that was shorting the gallons pumped.

I had one guy tell me he did not like using their gas because his mpg always went down when he did.

It was owned by A. Raab.

Seen the same thing in Tiverton Ontario. I'll leave out his ethnic origins, opp investigation of him molesting his daughter, his ripping off his restaurant partners and lying to my neighbor about how much fuel he pumped into her car.

My dad back in the 70's was going to a station in Lansing Mi. They had every kind of fuel you could think of several grades of gas, Diesel 1&2, fuel oil 1&2, Kero, racing gas, methanol... Anyway fuel oil was cheaper there then delivered so he would put a 275gal tank in the old '64 F250 and fill it up. Went pretty good several times. Then he started getting 300gal in this tank then 350gals. He called the authorities and pretty soon they were shut down

Push button on computer. That's all it takes. Ask any computer guru. Temptation is too great. Not enough inspectors or they don't knowwhat they are looking for.

The state weights and measures guy I called knows. I explained the whole thing to him and told him that the only way I was able to catch him was the fact that I had empty 5 gallon cans that I have had for years and filled for years and never got 6 gallons in half a can.

I regularly inspect the inspection stickers where I buy gas, including his and they all have been current. Apparently he installed the switch after the inspection or had it off when the inspector was visiting his place.

Additionally, I have paid closer attention at other stations and haven't found another thief since.

There was a story on the local news recently about a station

down in Georgia somewhere that cheating people like this.

You paid for 5 gallons and the pump showed 5 gallons pumped

but what you really got was 4 gallons and 3 quarts.

This was a high volume station near the interstate highway.

The station owners were in a lot of trouble because of this.

Most fuel cans are designed so that if you put exactlly the amount posted on the side, you will have plenty of room for expansion. If a five gallon fuel can held only an exact five gallons, it would burst in warm weather.

My 5 gallon cans can hold around 6 gallons if I fill to the top, so would like to know the real scoop for sure, but that is dirty pool if true.

My 5 gallon cans have a space at the top for expansion. Probably about half a gallon; never fill it up to the top for obvious reasons.

Of course, it just had to be some sort of an ethnic minority that was screwing the customers right? That probably made it 100 times worse than it actually was. Those gas pumps are set and calibrated by Measurement Canada so your theory about getting gouged is wrong, plain and simple. You should check out EVERYTHING that could possibly account for whatever error you perceived before voicing your biggoted opinions here. I suggest that you go down there and pump some exact amount of diesel into a container and then measure it accurately. If there is a problem, then report it to those who can do something about it. Meanwhile, very few of those "Paki's" you refer to are on the welfare role like so many of us other Canadians. They work hard at what they do and the fact that they have cornered the market in many areas are a festering sore that so many of us have to pick at unfairly to feel good. Your post about the measurement problem that you perceived is well taken however it's the other part of the post I have problems with.

Two points:
First, It seems to me that there are two kinds of people in the world. Those that are looking to get offended by the words of others and those who are not. I've always preferred to be amongst the latter bunch.
Secondly,
There are lots and lots of laws on the books that say I must treat all people equally when it comes to renting to them or hiring them or educating them etc.
But so far as I know there aren't any laws that say I have to trust one group as much as another.

I stand corrected. I wish to appologize if I have offended anyone. I guess I was just upset because it wasn't the first time this station has been caught. I only went there because I wasn.t sure I had enough to get to the next station.

Lighten up? Arabs? I think you'd better read up on just who the original post was referring to. I don't see where Arabs have gotten into this conversation. Just to enlighten you, the owner of the service station wasn't an Arab, I believe the original post stated that he was a Pakistani, but I guess to you anyone with a darker skin color than yours from that part of the world is an Arab right? Most of the worlds problems stem from attitudes such as yours my friend.

It is always a good thing to check the volume of the fuel being pumped. If I was you call the authorities on this station owner. I know that the state government looks into these complaints, at least in the US anyway.
