While filling up my pick up the other day with diesel, I got to talking to a truck driver who was filling up his rig, about the rising cost of fuel. He commented "Well at least you can get the road use tax rebated to you because your private and not commercial" He explained that the Govt. adds an additional road use tax to the diesel but that private individuals are eligible for a refund of the taxes if the vehicle is used for personal use. He went on to say that I should file for the rebate when I do my taxes. I have owned a diesel pick since the early 80's and have never heard of this refund before. I know you can claim a refund for agricultural use but how about personal, non-agricultural use? Does anyone here know anything about it? Thanks in advance.

Don't know about that, but there's one that's the other way around. At least here in Michigan. You get a 3 axle permit and apply for a certain amount of refund. Guy musta been a teamster and had been reading his union newsletter.

i think we was smoking a few to meny you can't get any tax back on road fuel that is used on road BUT you can get road tax back on diesel and gas IF it's used off road but you have to fill out the paper work for state and the feds.send it in and then they refund the tax

'Twas bunk. The distinction is between on-road and off-road use. Same distinction as between reefer fuel and gittin'-on-down-the road-fuel.

The latest change (not at all recent anymore) is that distributors are rewuired to charge sales tax at the pint of sale on off-road fuel, and a lot of them aren't willing to take on the cost and trouble of doing that.

What that does is makeyou produce the recipts to prove the sale and the tax to calim a rebate on the sales tax.

They're runnin' to the bank with the unclaimed taxes.

Far as I know--pure BS. Road tax is road tax. Rebate is for off-road use.

I kinda thought it sounded too good to be true. Since he mentioned the refund, I started to put together a list of my fuel invoices for the past year. I got really sick when I noticed that in a years time, my cost for diesel went up a few cents short of two dollars per gallon. That to me is outrageous. Never before can I remember such a large increase in such a short period of time. Makes you start to wonder what the breaking point will be for everyone. Sooner or later we won"t be able to afford anything because of the cost of oil and fuel.

I dont understand all I know about it, but I have noticed when I was driving a horse van that if I filled up at the auto pump it was a less than at the big rig pumps.

A lot of truck stops (Flying J"s ALL do this), they add a few cents if you are buying with credit - but only at the truck islands. At the car, or RV pumps, it"s cash price no matter what. Guess where I fill up my dump truck?

I run on FlyingJ fuel almost exclusively and always get the "cash" price at the big pumps (same as auto) when I use my FlyingJ card AND Discover....which pays me back another 4-8 cents a gallon.
