To day I went to get a homeowners policy, from a very well established company.State farm. They said they could'nt insure my, hobby type woodshop unless I take my sealed style, sears wood-coal burner out of shop, and yet I would be allowed to put a gas furnace in it's place,[I just can't use wood-coal as primary heating source.] Now as I said the stove I have in there now is a sealed system, and that would be insurable. If my intelligence serves me right a gas furnace has an open flame when the burner comes on. My question to them was, which type of system would be safer around saw dust?.After a little hem-hawing, [no real awnser.]I have a policy but have to take out my stove,P.S. I told them I only use the stove maybe 3 times a mo.I guess I was dealing with a bunch of rocks.

Get rid of State Farm and no more problems. Wouldn't use them if they were the last insurance company around.

I have real good luck with State Farm, they maybe a little higher than others,I haven't looked into other prices.I have a local agent that has always taken good care of all auto accidents, home
storm problems and any other problems I have had.
I can feel comfortable knowing I can count on him
if I have a problem, that means a lot and is worth a little extra money.

State farm.. I had been with them for 35 years. In about 4 locations. bought the wifes family farm and they would not insure it, too far from town....
Went with Farm bureau and switched the cars over as well and saved some money on the car insurance.

Funny i have a pellet stove a pellet ways about 10th of an once maybe less. I just put in for a new loan on the place to replace the one i have with the same company. they wanted me to have a backup heat source because I may not be able to fill the pellet stove. I have an electric heater that is behind the box to hold the pellets they said that was Ok.

I know every company is only as good as the agent you deal with but I have always had good luck with Farm Bureau. Can not say I have ever had a cross word with them about anything. Might be worth looking into, I know some on here don't speak well of them but I have had good luck with'm.

I'm going to open up a can of worms but your agent is not at fault unless, he knew the underwriting parameters. Some underwriter is showing how insignificant amount of knowledge a person needs to be an underwriter. I once had a underwriter in the 1980's turn down a house because it had a metal roof. They would not offer a homeowners policy to them but they would offer a fire insurance policy to them like that million $ house was a barn. Anyone that knows anything about a metal roof knows it is far superior to an asphalt shingle roof. This was the 3rd largest carrier in the state of GA. Underwriters are the lowest paid people in an insurance company. They often are located in an office in a smaller city so they can get them to work for less money. There is no logic the way Insurance companies do business and they will hose you in a minute. Too much information is a child's hands can be dangerous and the same can be said of an insurance company.

I "self -insure" my hobby stuff.

When you look at what the premium would be, why not just save the expenditure, and "self-insure" your hobby stuff?

If you want to get your ears burned, just start talking about State Farm around auto body shops.

SF lays awake nights dreaming up new ways to screw body shops into doing work cheaper. So you know what happens to quality if a shop tries to deal with SF.

Several years ago, I was driving down an alley in our company parking lot. I was properly on the right side of the alley. An oncoming gal dialing her cell phone came over onto my side and hit me head on. I had witnesses all over the place as it was quitting time. I was driving an Olds 88 that had never had a scratch and she was driving an old BMW with so many dents a few new ones wouldn't have been noticeable. I had American Family insurance and she had SF.

This smart a** broad from SF looked me square in the eye with a straight face and told me that there was no way we could tell who was at fault so we'd have to share the blame. My collision insurance covered my car, and she knew I wouldn't take them to court over a $100 deductible.

WEll I have been on a VFD for a lot of years and wood stoves have burnt up more houses than all other reasons combined in our territory. I used to burn wood finally took it out and tore out the chimney.

Woodstoves don't burn down anything!!! Negligent PEOPLE burn them down. That's like saying we outlaw cars because they kill thousands of people every year. These people will still have fires even if they don't have a wood stove. Like Larry the cable guy says "if guns kill people then I can blame my pencil for flunking math in the tenth grade!

Our fire trucks were out on a call tue night.I turned on the scanner. They found a smouldering fire in a chair that had been started by a magnifying glass. My son was working on a job where he smelled smoke when leaving for the day.He found a magnifying glass standing in a can of pens. There was a line burned in wall paneling. The wood was glowing red where the sun focused the beam on the wall.I did fire reports for many years for our dept.Never found a magnifying glass as the cause.Battery chargers were a common fire cause.I had a lot of trouble with Country way ins co last summer. They tried to cancel me last year because the house needed paint and some moss was growing on asphalt shingles.I was working on my mowing tractor so I could get my hay in so paid to get the house painted. My wife used money she had saved for this winters heating oil.the state ins commisson stopped Countryway from canceling our ins.The stress made my blood pressure shoot up so high my wife took me into the emergency room.Ive tried to find a new ins co, few ins co will write farm ins here.Farm Bureau turned me down because the house has fuses instead of circuit breakers.I did fire reports where FPE breakers failed to trip.Ins co are scum ..Meds got my pressure down to a safe level.Im going to docs for a check up today.I had ins with the same ins co for 35 years with no problems.Co stopped writing Farm policies so I went with Agway ins, no problems until agway sold out to Countryway.Agway sent all their customers 500.00 after the 98 ice storm even though they didnt file any claims.I did have ice slid off the barn roof that made holes in the building beside it so the money was welcome.Countryway has given me nothing but trouble.I did send photos of circuit breakers that failed to trip and started fires to the Farm Bureau agent that refused to ins me.When I bought this place 42 years ago I called a local agent. He came to see me and gave me a policy that covered the house and my TV shop and contents for 60.00.No BS.After he pas sed on his son took over, No Bs for 35 years.

I had Farmer's Ins. I had 2 woodburners in my house when I bought it. One was a Jotul, and that was ok with Farmers. 2nd was a Ben Franklin insert, that they didn't like. I think it was the chimmney on that. No problem since. Never had a heated outbuilding, yet.

At 20 years old I checked with SF on insurance. They wouldn't insure my house because it was to old, wouldn't insure my truck because I was to young but they sure wanted to sell me life insurance since they figured I would be around 60 years to pay for it. Never had anything to do with them since.

Thirty years ago I tried to get my car insured with State Farm, and they wouldn't have any thing to do with me. Now, that I'm 62, guess who's wanting me to stop in and talk insurance? They didn't want me then..... ....I don't want them now. Simple as that.

Maybe install a primary gas furnace and keep the wood stove. In a house, space heaters are hazardous to plumbing.

Many years ago they dropped my Dads policy becuase he was late on a car payment! They dropped his homeonwers policy because he was late on a car apyment!!!!!?????
My little brother was riding back and forth to school with a guy up the road. Guy has an accident which wasnt his fault, they hit an iron rail bridge. The guy who caused the wreck fled the scene, so the guy driving had to file on his insurance. SF wouldnt pay the bill on my brothers hospital stay, said the guy driving wasnt covered for that. Had to sue SF to get the bills paid, since the agent admitted he said the driver didnt need this certain coverage, when in fact the driver did. They used his father as the primary driver of the car, which wasnt caught until after the wreck. Brother is still walking around with a steel pin in his leg.

I heard the same story last June when I switched to Farmer's ins. I had everything insured with Country Companys for forty two years, called for a price of insuring a 04 Cavalier for my sixteen yr. old daughter, $1200. I bought the car, called them the next morning to have it insured. They said $2022. I said go straight to he!!, send me a refund for all of my policies. I got the Farmer's Ins from a buddy of a guy I work with but I just don't get a very warm, fuzzy feeling from it. They raised the premium $500. after six months, I lost my wood stove in the shed and I lost the liability ins. on my Super C. I think I'm gonna start shopping again. Jim

We had a similar problem...we had been planning on buying and installing a woodstove in the shop, but the insurance company went ballistic when the rep came out and saw the stove stack. The company threatened to cancel all of our insurance on everything, shop, house, vehicles, etc. unless we promised to never install a woodstove...I don't really understand the reasoning behind that, but it's just the way it goes I guess.

Are they afraid of wood stoves or own stock in oil futures? I have had a wood stove in my shop for twenty years, never a problem. The less they know the better off you are. Dave

"The less they know the better off you are." NOT REALLY

If the wood stove is the "cause" of a fire, and the stove is not certified ($125.00) and listed with the insurance co your shop is not covered
and if the house goes up it also may not be covered.

And the fire could be from faulty electric, "CAUSE" you have an uncertified wood stove it's the wood stove.

Insurance fraud is on both sides, they can tell us how many million we steal from them each year, but they never tell us how many Billion they steal from us.
