Checked fertilizer prices at last place that sells bulk fertilizer in Weatherford Texas, and I almost fell to the floor. 34-0-0 at $450 per ton. 15-15-15 at $565 pr ton. Coastal bermuda and sudan hay raisers are really going to suffer here this year. Hay prices has to go up. Many folks will not fertlize and yeilds/quality of coastal will fall substantially. Store manager said that fertilizer will go even higher with next filling of their bulk tanks, because China is buying up huge quantities of the chemicals for production of the fertilize. Just another sad day for whats left of local farmers. Tom

Here is how I am going to handle the high cost of fertilizer. I quit. I have put up around 5000 small square bales of quality horse hay for thelast 10 years except last years drought cut that to 2000 bales. I put out 300lbs per acre last year and got not much in return. Fertilizer was 350.00 per ton last year. I went to get fertilizer this year and was told that 18 46 0 was $900.00 per ton. I made my decision right then and there. I quit. I will cut the fields to keep them clean, roll up whatever weeds and briars grow and sell it for cow hay. If it is not fit for cow hay I will just bush hog it down to keep it from growing up in briars but I will not pay the high costs of fertilizer and diesel fuel, and work my butt off for very little profit. I think others will follow. The days of the small farmer will soon be over.

Here in NC 2 weeks ago 18-46-0 was $750, 0-0-60 was $460, 46-0-0 was $580, 12-24-24 was $615.

Orchard grass hay I sold two years ago for $3.00 will be $5.00 this year. I am already informing my customers.

Hey Tom,

If you will go look at MOS, AGU, TRA, MON, and POT (Stock market ticker symbols for fertilizer supplier corporations) to name a few, you would have seen that for the past 6 months the price of this stuff has gone up 300% in some instances.

Yes it is driven by demand and some of the named suppliers limit production deliberately (and tell you so) to keep the supply short with the high demand which makes it tough for consumers like you and me.

I thought I would be smart and buy some stock in these companies to offset this but it didn't work out.

So, what I have done is informed my customer that the $25 5x6 high quality bale of sudan/sorghrum cross he is used to is now $50 and if you can't handle that, tell me now before I buy the high priced seed and fertilizer to grow yours. I'll just do for myself.

Things have changed and we had better get used to it and figure out how to handle it or get out of the business..... like any other business.

Mark
