I read Raleighs post on Need help with insurance on a guy working with Raleighs eq. Prompted this question...

How many let neighbors borrow stuff? Drills, saws, tractors, shreaders, balers....etc..

I quit doing the lending thing..I have neighbors that borrow, break, and give back with out an ounce of response. One Neighbor burned up my power Drill, Destroyed a borrowed posthole digger from another fella..

Also is there liability on the lender for letting a borrower borrow and mow off their foot with your tractors brushhog.

This is a good one for Walt's "good Ole days" topic..... ..... ..... .

Remember when you didn't have to ask questions like this????? ??

I don't loan stuff either (few exceptions). Friends, neighbors, and family are the worst borrowers. Loaned a guy something once and when I went to get it about 4 months later, he had a place painted for it on his silhouette board.
As far as liability, use your imagination, attorneys do. It could turn into an inconvenience at the least.

I don't have a lot of neighbors, and some of the ones I do have aren't the greatest, so I tend not to loan things to them. My personal friends, however, are another matter. If they need something done, I either loan them what they need to do it, or drop over and help them do it. I bend over backwards to help my friends and their families.

I go do some tractor work for people, but I won't loan it out. If I break something or get hurt, I can afford to fix the equipment, and I have health insurance for me. My neighbors? As far as tools, I try not to. Living in the sticks makes that easy.

I do not lend or borrow.Ive had several offers to use freinds logsplitters.I rent one every year so if anything happens nobodys mad.If I need a power tool I go buy it[I go to alot of garage sales].I dont steal tools from work. Its just human nature to not return things.Since anyone can sue for anything yes I think you would be in the lawsuit along with the mower makers.

I had one neighbor that I always hoped would borrow my stuff- he was a great mechanic, and when he'd bring the baler back, he'd say, "You know, that one side was leaving a loop after it tied. Got to lookin' at it, and . . ." Everything always worked better when it got back from Charlie's place.

Borrowin's a touchy subject. Ya can generate enough bad feelin's with hand tools. Power tools are worse, and machinery and implements are the worst.

Most of my borrowin' in space, since the neighbor has a heated garage, a real luxury up here. 'Course that means usin' his tools while I'm there. In that circumstance, I make a point of puttin' things back where they belong, and leavin' the place like he would keep it oly cleaner than I found it. Not everybody does it like I do, and there are folks who aren't even allowed to visit his shop. Banning them took care of the missing tool problem.

If I actually borrow something, I take the same approach. Return it promptly in same or better shape.

A lot of folks don't. My rule is to have a REAL SHORT list of folks that can borrow. I will NOT be burned twice by the same person.

My neighbor lets me borrow his tractors & tools with my own understanding that if I break something, I fix or replace it. He does not have to tell me that, I just assume it is my responsibility to take care of it.

I would never dream of returning something I borrowed that was broken, I have used some of his specialty tools and try and return them cleaned up and that same night or first thing in the morning.

I put in fuel that I used for his tractors and also try and clean them up also.

You will learn that borrowing is not a good policy. You borror, you break, you buy new for owner, you have broken tool for price of brand new. Borrowing should only be done with close neigbors who also borrow form you in about the same amounts so it equals out. I dont want any constant moochers around me. Tom
