Was going over the scheduled maintenance guide and owners manual on this new car we bought last week.
This thing has electric steering so no power steering fluid from what I understand.
The guide says to check all fluid levels (trans; rear end; radiator) every 30,000 miles. It also says to rotate tires and change engine oil every 5000 miles.
This seems fine to me so far.

So I am looking threw the guide to find out how often the automatic transmission oil should be changed. In a 120,000 mile book I can not find it listed once.
This seems odd so while I am in town today I stop by the local auto parts store and ask them about it. Guys tells me you never change the trans oil. I am blown away by this statement. He even says some transmissions are sealed from the factory and there is no way to change the oil unless you pull the trans out the car.
Since my gray hair is showing my age this young auto parts guy suggest we look under the hood. Sure enough… right there on the dip stick is a sticker. Transmission oil does not ever need changing under normal driving conditions.

Now call me old but this just does not seem right from what I have learned in my life time. I know it is true now because I saw the sticker with my own eyes but it still does not seem right.

Now you would think if they can make a automatic transmission that never needs a oil change they could make a ˝ ton single cab pickup that gets 40 to 50 mpg.

Sorry for posting this off topic subject but this news goes against everything I have learned so much I just had to share it with someone.

A lot of newer cars have sealed systems now , they use synthetic oil and other very pricey fluids that cost out the wazoo to replace .

I think a lotta trans fluid changing came with the 15 minute oil stops. Had many cars never changed, did just fine. Also never changed manual trans fluid, rear end dope, or antifreeze. Now you better change antifreeze or you aluminum and plastic radiator will fall apart. Do change trans fluid if it smell funny like burned.

You don't "change" it in the old sense of the word. You take it to the dealer/service shop and have them FLUSH it on a machine that pumps the fluid through filters until it's clean useing the fittings on the side of the trans. Even on the old style with removable pan and filter you are better off doing it this way. Cost $100-$125 and do it at abt. 70,000 and forget it. It's better and more thorough than any service you can do at home. Most are guaranteed to 70 or 100,000 miles now. What's that tell ya? The old "bullet-proof" TH 350-400 , C6 and Torqueflite's sometimes wouldn't make it that far!

The very high numbers used by the manufacture started out to show how inexpensive they were to maintain. But there is no doubt about the improvement in quality and durability. I have a Toyota Tacoma 130 k and never been tuned up. I change the fluids but it still has the same plugs and wires from the factory. I check my mpg constantly and it is as high as ever.

good old days,Re: O/T New car maintenance in reply to john in la, 03-23-2008 20:18:35
And people moan and complain for the good old days when a vehicle needed points & plugs every 3000 miles and an oil change every 2000 miles. The engine was worn out and needed a rebuild at 75,000-100,000 miles. The vehicle didn"t get 1/2 the mileage either.

And don't forget adjusting the brakes, one at a time, every few thousand miles. And adjusting the "bands" on automatic transmissions. And a zillion grease zerks, everywhere. People bemoan the lack of "service stations" anymore- well, back then we needed them, now we don't, because there is so little "service" that needs to be done on modern cars. The good ole days maybe weren't what they're cracked up to be.

Auto trans oil does age. I change mine between 30 and 50 thousand miles. Never lost a trans yet. When it takes about an hour to drive 30 miles in stop and go traffic your trans oil really gets hot. A pan drop is the only correct way to have the trans oil changed. A visit to the trans shop is 1500 for starters in this area. So a trans oil change for less than 100 is a lot of trans work avoided. Now I once talked to a WV type who drove the oil in his 4 cyl range 70000 mile so their you go. You are one of very few that has read the owners manual cover to cover for the most part. I gave up the rush hour traffic.

I had a 94 Blazer, the trans was rebuilt @230,000 miles, only time it was ever touched. I have run several cars past 250,000 without ever doing anything to the trans. It is a sealed unit, and on a car, as long as your not towing with it, or beating it up at stoplights, I don't see why it should go bad.

Hi John,

Well thats really not too strange with todays cars. My 02 F350 differentials are rated for 100k miles on a 1ton pick-up. Just look at the heat they see pulling full load weight.

I also had a Unkle Jude that would buy a new car in the 50's and 60's and never changed oils, including engine oil. He always got 225k to 250k miles out of his vehicles. That's a pretty bold move for that era.

If he was asked about it he'd reply, "well....., well, I just added a quart last week to the engine, so it has new oil in it". Unkle Jude always started every sentence with "well....., well" with a long pause between well's and you guessed it, he drilled water wells for a living...lol

It might be a myth that it has to be changed. used to changed AT oil in my Louisville but the oil I let out was the same colour as that I put in,so they might have a point. maybe only have to check the filter. It was a PITA.

My 1969 Saab Sonett with 4 speed Trans has over 300,000 Miles on it and the original oil. Learned many years ago that oil does not break down it gets dirty a sealed tranny should last indefently with the same oil.
But automatic trannys can get dirty from the where on the bands or disc which ever it has.
Walt

PS I don't need anyone saying that I'm going to loose the Saab tranny sooner or later because its already much much later.

I was not saying you never check the oil or add any that may have leaked out over time to bring it to full.

It just seems odd to me that you would never change the oil and the filter. A automatic produces a lot of small shavings from just running. Every automatic I have ever owned the oil turns black over time.
