Hello All,
Ken here from Ireland. My brother & myself will be visiting the US for three weeks in September. We have no set plans yet only maybe travel in the eastern half of the States. Can anybody suggest shows/museums etc that may be interesting to visit?

Been 20 years since I was there, but back then, you could get a lot of bang for the buck in Missouri.

Have fun,

Dave

Hey guys,

I kissed the Blarney Stone about 15 years ago and lived a smooth life ever since. Went to Ireland for a week to visit a group of American Legion members and thier post. Bunch of older folks on the trip. We marched in a St Patrick's Day Parade and me and a buddy fell in with a couple that showed us around about half of our stay. Shoot me an email if you want. Give me a chance to return the favor. Tell me what you have in mind (what you're interested in) and how you plan on traveling and I'll see what I can dig up for you.
My address:

The Heartland Museum in Clarion, Iowa is one my favorites. Loads of ag items and plenty to keep the Mrs. happy too. And hospitality that knows no limits.

I'd decide what kind of museums you want to see, and then reserch them on the internet. There's HUNDREDS to choose from. Start now, it's gonna be a big job.

The "eastern half" of the US covers a lot of territory. Do you have anything more specific in mind? Most states have a least one major museum with farm equipment.

The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC is the grandaddy of American museums. You could spend several days and not see it all. Most of the farm equipment is in the Smithsonian's Museum of American History.

If you're going to be in the midwest, the Henry Ford Museum / Greenfield Village is a terrific museum with a lot of farm equipment.

I believe the Museum of American History at the Smithsonian is being renovated and is presently closed. Not sure when it's scheduled to reopen.

Sodly,

You are right. The Smitsonian web site says it will reopen "Fall 2008". Sounds to me like that could easily run over into 2009.

Old Threshers of Mt Plesant, Iowa is one of the best in the nation. There will be 100 plus steam engines, hundreds of farm tractors built before 1950, hundreds of hit andmiss engines, Corliss engines, antique cars, and operating steam trains. It is held early September ending Labor Day.

Do you know anyone that shows a Case 22-40 or a 20-40 Oil pull at that show?

Probably find one at the Mt Pleasant, IA Old Thresher's show Aug 28-Sept 1st. They usually have 50 or 60 steamers and oil-pulls running around.
