My mom and dad got Wildblue satellite internet a few weeks ago. They just got an email saying that they exceeded their monthly data allowance as per the "Usage Threshhold." Becuase they exceeded the limit, their speed has been reduced to near dial-up speeds. What the heck? I'm attaching the email they got. They listen to alot of online radio, and play around on youtube alot, so I guess it's possible that they overused it. Anyone else ran into this? Here's the email:

"Dear DISH Network customer,

To ensure that all DISH Network customers have equitable access to the satellite network, we have set a rolling 30-day limit on data customer usage per customer, called Usage Threshold, which is detailed in our Fair Access Policy (FAP).

You have used more data in the last 30 days than is allowed on your current service plan’s Usage Threshold. As a result, your DISH Network High-Speed Internet powered by WildBlue access speeds have been slowed down in accordance with the FAP, which can be viewed at www.dishmail.net/legal. You will still be able to use the Internet access service but your speeds will be slower. Your service will be returned to its previous operating levels once your cumulative previous 30-days usage has decreased to 70% of your Usage Level. Please be aware that future occurrences, whether intentional or not, can result in a slowdown of your service again.

High data usage is commonly caused by the downloading and/or uploading of large files or large quantities of files. If the cause of this excessive usage can be accounted for by yourself or another user of the system, you should verify that all users are aware of the FAP regarding excessive usage. You may also want to take measures to ensure that usage is kept within acceptable levels. To view your current usage statistics, visit www.dishmail.net.

If, after discussing this matter with all users of the service, the excessive usage cannot be accounted for, it may have been caused by the misuse of your system by an outside person. Unfortunately this would mean that the security of your system has been compromised, and will need to be secured as soon as possible. To remedy this issue, we recommend you follow these steps:

1. Ensure that you have applied all critical patches and service packs to your operating system (i.e. Windows). These are available at>Link

2. Ensure that your anti-virus software is up to date. New virus definitions come out frequently; if you are uncertain whether your software is current you will need to verify that you have the most recent updates. Most programs can be configured to update on their own. At the time your service was installed, you should have received F-Secure anti-virus software either downloaded from the Internet or on a CD. If you do not have anti-virus software, you should install a current version as soon as possible; multiple options can be found at most retail stores.

3. Have your computer serviced by a PC or network professional. In a large number of cases, it is possible there has been a breach in the security of the affected computer. This could possibly lead to more severe issues, or a recurrence of excessive usage coming to our attention.

Thank you for choosing DISH Network High-Speed Internet powered by WildBlue. We value you as a customer and look forward to providing you with an excellent Internet service. If you have any questions, please call DISH Network Customer Service at 1-800-333-DISH (3474).

Thank you,

DISH Network

P.S. If you find you need more bandwidth each month than the allowable Usage Threshold on your current service package, you may want to consider upgrading to a package that provides more bandwidth. To upgrade your service, call DISH Network at 1-800-333-DISH (3474)."

Ugh. Thoughts please.

Had Hughes for 15 months... day my contract expired I had the service shut off... what an expensive load of crap.

I now have Sprint wireless broadband, unlimited package... I get DSL speeds and most of the time better than DSL. Never any service outages... It kicks Hughesnet's butt all over the place...

I don't pay any more for Sprint than I would have for Hughes after the equipment payback period ended. For the same price I get 1 1/2 to 2 X the download speed and 2 - 3X the upload speed...

I have no other options other than satellite or what I have now.. no cable, no dsl, no wi-fi.

Wildblue I believe will terminate your contract if you exceed the threshold for a certain period of concurrent months... Wildblue last I knew had a MONTHLY thru-put limit and once reached you were pretty much kaput until the next month.
Hughesnet has a 24 hour rolling FAP policy...
Both blow donkey balls....
Not to mention, from Noon until about midnight you might as well just shut it off and go do something else... Hughes was extremely slow during peak periods for me.

Satellite providers have oversold their business and are overloading the capabilities of their equipment, hence the FAP policies.

Try your phone system for internet usage. ATT DSL line unlimited use with 10 different email address is 14.95 per month here. Now this is 24/7 usage.

I have had Dish TV t my vacation home for 6 years. They have been a continual pain. If I was up there all the time I woud have long since changed companies. Their service is awful and their reps in some foreign country could care less and have no idea what their doing. They lie too. Did not show up for two differnt service appointments.
Anyway if they service internet the way they service TV I would get rid of them sooner than later.

We made the mistake of going from Hughes to Wildblue. BIG MISTAKE!! Thank heavens we will be out from under their contract in a couple of months and then it's good bye wildblue! All of the penalizing stuff is true. They lock you into a 2 yr contract because they know everybody probably would leave as soon as they use it the first month or less. Forget about having internet service when it is damp, foggy or rainy and a cloud in sunny weather can do it in. Thank goodness our sentence is about to end!

They talked to Hughesnet. There was some major reason they couldn't do it. I think the reception out at their house wasn't available or something. Was going to be a couple years before it was available to them, so they went with Blue. They've been very pleased up until this newest development.

Mom has the same problem anytime the grandkids are in. They myspace the thing to death. Hughesnet has horrible customer service. Once the modem began smoking and melting, so they disconnected the power. They called to report it, and the technician insisted that it be plugged back in to see if he could access the modem from his location. He was quite insistent about it. Mom spoke to his manager and got it straightened out. I am sure the India based customer service hires the top people, but it does not help.

Try ordering something from Circuit City and see where the call goes!

Yes, that's the way it works, you obviously don't remember the old dial up internet service. Wildblue is the best service available in my location, hands down. You need to either cut down on the video watching or get the higher priced, greater capacity service.

We flirt with the useage limit all the time.In fact we once got shut down for one day.You can check every day to see where you are on bandwidth useage.

We are not real happy with WildBlue.Every time a cloud comes by it seems like we lose the signal. It does a good job of loading pictures and videos but beyond that its nothing special for the price paid.

Yes, it's a 250 MB download limit per day for the cheapest package - unless you do it in the middle of the night. And, when you exceed it - it slows to way below that of dial-up.

It's in the agreement they signed - but they probably didn't notice - I certainly didn't when I signed.
