I enjoy tractor trivia.

Anyone know what US built STOCK tractor produced the most horsepower with the least cubic inches?

Thanks,
Glenn F.

One of the helicopters I flew in the Army had a Wright Patterson 1820 cu in 9 cylinder radial engine with a supercharger that produced 1500 shp. 56" of manifold pressure at 2800 rpm. Pretty impressive. That by the way, was the B-17, C-47, etc. engine. There were so many left over after the war that they decided to use it as a helicopter powerplant.

Big Detroit in reply to Glenn F., 03-20-2008 13:41:36
I suspect it has to be a Detroit Diesel 2-stroke-cycle powered tractor - and the bigger the better.

The Big Bud tractor - model 16V-747 has 1000 engine horsepower, 900 drawbar horsepower, and 1472 cubic inches. That comes to .679 of a horsepower per cubic inch. I don't know of any other tractors that high.

Some lessers ones are:

Oliver Super 99 GM with 213 c.i. 3-71 Detroit 78.7 horsepower .369 horse per c.i.

Big Deere 4-stoke is close though - Deere 8430T 548 c.i. 298 horse .543 of a horse per c.i.

I am not sure the Big Bud would be considered a production tractor, since they only made one or two of them...

It was produced by a small company, and offered for sale to the public for around $300,000. Seems that makes it "production" regardless of how few were made. They made several different models.

The big four-stroke-cycle Deere is pretty close to it.

The Oliver 1950 made 105 PTO HP with only 212 cubic inches using a GM 4-53 engine at 2400 RPM. Yes, it is a 2-stroke engine.
That is probably right up there, although the newer turbocharged diesels could easily produce comparable power to displacement ratios. Generally they are not using all that they are capable of because they have to have long-term reliability.

I'd hazard a guess at the Versatile 276. It used an aftercooled 4BT wound to 118 on the flywheel. That's 239 cid for the record...

Olivers with Detroit 4-53 and 3-71.
JD 8010 with detroit 6-71
Early Steiger tractors with Detroit diesel engines.
A couple of German and English tractor brands with 2 cycle loop charged diesel engines.

A 435 with C45 injectors and wound up to 2400rpm would easily make .500HP per cu inch. It would only be making a hint of smoke too.
