looking at buying a 460 long. the hydraulics are very jerky and the fluid is milky looking. also, when you turn the steering wheel, it takes several turns to make it start to turn. the rear lift does stay up once it gets up, but kinda jerky.

on the steering, would the be caused by a simple low fluid issue, or is it gonna be a pump problem. the guy who has it had someone tell him that of the two hydraulic pumps on the motor, one runs the lift hydraulics, and the back pump runs the steering? any help would greatly be appreciated....

Thanks guys. I just looked it over for just a few minutes, and I did notice the two pumps, but I don"t know much about longs, only fords. the lift part don"t worry me too bad, but that steering problem does. the pumps don"t make any noises so i really figured it may just be low on fluid. going to look at the tractor again today..... ....

thanks again

Yes, the pumps and reservoirs are separate for the steering and the lift systems for the Long (UTB) 460. Easily visible. If you were unable to determine that just by looking at the tractor, your experience is too little for successful repairs. Manuals are available. This forum will not accept the link. Sounds like the fluid needs changing and the screen that filters the oil needs to be cleaned. The hydrostatic steering on the Fiat built tractors can be a little funky sometimes anyway.
Good tractor overall I have a 460 I use and its very good on fuel.

What TF said plus there is a filter in the power steering resevoir that may need cleaning. See my post on Long 460 hydraulics on the Todays Tractors forum
