Someone ran my daughter off the road this past weekend and then left. (hit and run) She is fine even though she run the car in the ditch and rolled it on the left side.

So now I guess I am in the market for a new car.
Was sure looking forward to no car payment in 5 months but here we go again. Looking for something about the same as this Toyota Echo. While I know I can get a hybrid; the pay back on saved gas takes a while to pay the extra car cost note.

Going to test drive a 4 door Toyota Yaris this weekend and see how it rides.

With total or true cost per mile in mind can anyone give me some ideas of others to look at????? ???

Looking for a small 4 door.
With the Yaris selling at 13,000 and getting 30 mpg I consider it a top pick or very close to the top right now. Plus I have had good luck with Toyota's in the past.

Any ideas????? ???
Thanks

davpal, where do you get $3000 monthly for pension. I have been retired from GM 7 years. My pension is $1200 month with 32 years. I think you owe lotta retirees an apology. $3000 pension would be nice but I don't know where you can get it. I was an electrician which was in my plant top hourly pay.

Take a look at the new 2008 Ford Focus. I just got one two weeks ago and couldn't be happier. Still has less than 500 miles and is geting 31-32 in all around driving. Did have it on the Interstate @ 65 MPH and it was indicating 35 MPG. I'l have to wait and see on that. Still on second tank of gas. I think it will improve as it gets broken in more.

I also looked a the Yaris, but just did not like it. Drove it and was not impressed. I will never again buy any GM product, but I drove the Chevy Aveo ??? I think that is what it was called. Worse than the Yaris. I really only drove it to compare it to others.

The 2008 Ford Focus is a new design. It drives rides and handles better that previos models. It also has more interior room and is a lot quieter than before.

Main thing to look at is who will service the car, and parts costs down the road. If you have a good relationship with a dealer, then buy from them reguardless of brand. Parts and Service mean more to me than brand.

We have a 2008 Focus as our rental car. Wife likes it so that may be a option. It may have just been my luck but I do not know how the parts and service are at my local Toyota dealer. I have a 2002 Tocoma and this 2003 Echo and neither one has ever been in the shop once.
Only oil changes and I do that.

John,

I have had a Yaris 4-door sedan for 2-weeks now, and I am very happy with it. It is not the most comfortable car, but about as comfortable as can be expected for a vehicle that will nearly fit in the bed of my F-350.

I still have my F-350 for "truck stuff" including pulling a big a$$ camper, but, as is often the case, it needs to be fixed. It is a 2001 diesel, 90K miles so far the engine has been out 3 times, essentially to fix a leaky and corroded oil pan, it was delivered when new with a bad starter motor and I have had to replace it again since, the master cylinder for the clutch didn't last 30K miles, on my third cam posistion sensor (first one didn't last 5K miles), I had to replace the ball joints (that was a ton of fun), now the axle seal on the rear needs replacing - probably forgetting a bunch of other stuff.

I grew up in a Ford family, my wife and I, except for my F-350 have been Subaru and Toyota people. Those cars go with regular maintenance until the bodies start falling apart - typically about 150k miles or more. I'll never by another American brand - plus as others have said, they ain't any more American than the Japanese brands these days. The only thing more American about them is the top executive who rake in millions of un-earned income.

Just went through this. Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic. Even though they are small cars the safety ratings are good due to technology, both reliable, both have good resale. Corolla gets about 3 more mpg Civic is about 500.00 more and Civic insurance was abut 45.00 more a year and today at 3.45/ gal. soon to be 4.00 you will be trying to save all the gas you can. Tossed the coin and went with the Corolla. Getting 35 city and last weekend went to Tenn. and got 39.5 mpg. Looked at the Ford and most of it was made out of the country, brother works in Mexico for GM, we have NAFTA so whats made in the USA any more. Besides I have a Camery, made in Kentucky and a Tundra made in Princeton In. so the last time I checked they were in the USA

Save a bunch of bucks and drive something reliable, almost new and under warrenty.
The dealer auctions have lease returns with low miles and factory warrenty. A two year old vehicle with 95% of it's life left. For less than 1/2 it's new price is a good deal. Wax it up and nobody can tell it's used unless they look at the odometer.

That would explain why some people in the south won't buy cars from Michigan. They aint forgot The War of Northern Aggression yet either.

You got to look real hard at that domestic content ( now called North American content ) as GM has figured Canada and Mexico in their figures.

They didn't start crossing borders as much until they had major competiton paying their employees peanuts overseas. Kind of funny Americans expect domestic automakers to pay their American employees well AND sell their vehicles cheaper than the foreign compitition. Gotta pick one or the other, both ain't gonna to happen.

"You got to look real hard at that domestic content ( now called North American content ) as GM has figured Canada and Mexico in their figures."

Ford does the same - especially the Mexican content.

I also notice that "site" freely switches back and fourth between numbers and precentages - and lump all "foreign" cars into one group including those that have no manufacturing plants in the US.

For a more impartial view check here:

Link

I was surprised to learn this though:

"Few sports cars have captured the nation's imagination like the sleek Ford Mustang, a 21st-century reincarnation of an American classic. The Toyota Sienna minivan, by contrast, speaks to the utilitarian aesthetics of Japan: refined interiors, arm rests and lots and lots of cup holders.

Yet, by a crucial measure, the Sienna is far more American than the Mustang. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that were publicized in "Auto Industry Update: 2006," a presentation by Farmington Hills, Mich., research company CSM Worldwide, show only 65% of the content of a Ford Mustang comes from the U.S. or Canada. Ford Motor Co. buys the rest of the Mustang's parts abroad. By contrast, the Sienna, sold by Japan's Toyota Motor Corp., is assembled in Indiana with 90% local components."

Sell your Ford and buy a Toyota if you want to keep Americans working.

"Measuring local content is extremely difficult because a part made in America can be assembled from smaller parts, some of which might come from abroad. All of which underscores how the line between what is and isn't American, at least in the auto industry, is "going to be increasingly difficult to pinpoint" as car makers become increasingly international and produce more in local markets, says Michael Robinet, a vice president at CSM Worldwide."

I suppose since about 50% of the people around here in Michigan and the surrounding states are GM,Ford, and Chrysler retiree's making $3000 dollars a month pension and medical insurance it would still greatly benefit most of us to keep buying from the big 3. Think of the big three as the foundation that has formed this country and every other industry is created as a result of the automobile. It is like the question, what came first, the chicken or the egg? Well for the USA it was Henry Ford and the automobile. More prosperity has been single handedly brought to this country as the result of the automobile than any other industry there is. The big three did it. Don't bite the hand that feeds all of you. After working at Toyota and Honda for 30 years you wont walk away with $3,000 a month pension and Blue Cross. Maybe a plaque with your name engraved on it. I would buy a Chevy Cobalt or a Ford Focus or a Dodge Nitro. No Honda's or Toyota's in our driveway. They are junk after 15 years too.

Did you ever stop to think maybe the people that make those pensions are spending their money on products that support the local economy? My dad sure buys enough stuff from our local economy and so do my neighbors. Maybe even from the products that you make at your job. I don't get the $3000 dollars a month either but I would rather see people get it than to see Tokyo get a little nicer.

And which "American" car has a majority of American parts and components in it? Last I heard, many Toyotas have more American-sourced parts in them then most Fords do. Ford and GM also make most of their total profits in non-USA markets.

Personally, I don't care either way. But, if your decision is based on supporting Americans, or the USA - it's a stretch to to say buying one of the big three US brands makes any kind of difference.

I've always purchased cars that come off lease. Typically they are less than 20,000 miles and about 2/3 the price of new. Full factory warranty and just broke in. In 1995 I bought 2 Thunderbirds off lease for less than $12,000 each. Mine had 18,000 miles and hers had 16,000. Before that it was a Chevy Blazer. Before that was an Olds Cutlass. Really good luck with all of them doing it that way.

Just don't buy an old police car. 140,000 miles seems to be about the life of them. And they have been run really hard.

I disliked the center mounted dash of the Toyota and plus Honda has all the saftey features at the same price. Insurance is lower on Hondas than Toyotas. I haven't driven it much yet as this has been a bad winter here in Ohio and I just can't bare the thought of this salt trashing my new car.

Spend the extra $1,000, get the Corolla, better mileage than a yaris and bigger also. I think the Corolla is 42 MPG, the Yaris is either 39 or 40. The corolla, if you keep them off their sides, will last 200,000 + miles with few repairs.

A flop on the side is a lot different than taking a hit in the front. There are many bigger cars out there that will do alot more damage to a crackerbox car than than the crackerbox car can do to itself smashing into a wall at 40mph to get their super awesome crash test rating.
Personally I would go for something a little bigger like a Fusion or a Taurus sized, (I can't keep the import names straight) and used. Then she would have room to haul stuff and would have a good starter car for a family in a few years.

Big trucks and SUVs are not the best thing for a rookie driver (that flop would have been a full blown rollover with one, and they don't always come out so good)

Both my sisters drive Hondas and have gotten execptional service from them. I don't fault them or anyone else for driving the car of their choice, but I personally will NEVER purchase a vehicle from someone we fought in my lifetime. I realize that many of the vehicles are actually made in this country by Americans and that Americans own stock in the companies. I've seen too much footage of Baatan, Auschwitz, etc. I know that the people who perpetrated those crimes against humanity are mostly dead and the countries are now our allies, but that doesn't change my (irrational) feelings. I'm an old man and in many ways, am more tolerant; in other things, my resolve has only stiffened. (Come to think of it, I won't buy from a country whose schtick is wine and amour, either.) I'm glad your daughter is all right.

The Toyota Yaris is supposed to have nearly the same drivetrain as the Echo, I believe. I see quite a few of them on the road around here, never driven one though.

For similar size, mileage, and reliability check into the Corolla, Honda Fit, or Civic... If you want to save $$ and have a fuel-efficient reliable car, check out the mid-90's Civic DX or HX, many push 40mpg and are selling for under $6000 for a good one with around 90k miles on it.

As to the comments on little cars being a "death trap" - looks like your daughter walked away just fine. Anybody trying to do stuff like that, driving anything is a hazard to everyone on the road. Doesnt matter if your driving a Prius or a Peterbuilt.

I still feel safer driving a larger vehicle, and will still put my girl in something thats not a small car.

Seat belts save lives. Do you care more about good mileage or real sheet metal around the driver. In your case take a long look at an older Caprice or a large car. Take some of that 13 grand and spent it over a few years on gas for a road master.

If I remember correctly, Consumer Reports said the Toyota Yaris was the exception to the rule when it comes to buying Toyotas. It wasn't rated very well at all. Here is a link to a news story on it.

Have you considered a Scion?

Good choices. Also look at Toyota Corolla. Little bigger but slightly better mileage numbers than Yaris. Also has ABS and vehicle stability control for very little extra. If you want to see what dealers should be selling them for check out CARMAX.

When my girl gets of age to drive, there is no way I'm going to put her in some lil deathtrap just because of fuel mileage. With all the bad drivers today, she'll be in a truck for sure.

Try looking at the Honda Fit. It's about the same size and gas mileage. Might be a little bit cheaper as well. A lady I work with knows a person that has one and they say the car is great, roomy for it's size, and rides well. Good Luck!
