Have any of you installed a K&N or other intake kit - tube, housing and cone shaped dry filter?

Did you get the results they claim?

Thanks- mud (2000 F350)

You may want to look at AMSOIL filters. Link They make replacements for the others (K&N, Trueflow ect).

Hi Mud,

Back in 01 or 02, a guy on thedeiselstop.com teamed up with Gail Banks to test 10 top filters for CFM on the 7.3PSD. K&N was one of them.

The test results showed the the stock Motorcraft pleated filer, FA1750, out preform all the filters tested for CFM at approx 850cfm if I remember correct.
K&N came in 4th from the bottom for CFM.

K&N also has a known gasket leak as it doesn't fit the stock air box very well. K&N supposed fixed this in 2004 but they still found leaks after that time.

There was another test preformed by the DMax group. Once again K&N finished near the bottom in both CFM and particulates.

It's pretty hard to beat a pleated air filter. Many have tried but most have failed.

I got mine at powerstrokeshop.com too. They had the best price on them that I found on the net.

Mud, I've been running the Tymar airfilter set up for 7-8 years, NEVER had dirt in the tube. Plenty of filter for it to breath through! The IH engine rep saw it at my dealer one time and told me how much better it was than Fords design. He was by several people that day about warranty, he said he saw no problem. I have some friends with K&N units, too big of a pain for me, and too easy to mess up on taking care of them correctly. Just my opinion - third party image

I have an 88 7.3. I put the K+N on it for a few years, and then took it off. I can't say anything about the filtering qualities, but I do know that if the rubber gasket on your firewall between the hood and firewall go bad, water will sit in the stupid bowl trying to drip into your intake. Can you imagine what problems a little water in the cylinders might cause....

I'm with John M, forget the K & N. The best set up out there for the '99 - '03 7.3s is the Ford AIS severe duty intake. I've got one on my '02 and I really like it. If you follow any of the Powerstroke forums you'll find there are tons of stories out there of Powerstroke owners finding dust inside their intake tubes when using a K & N or a similar type filter. It has to be more the just coincidence if you ask me. Even the factory Ford 7.3 intake doesn't seal up that well. My intake tube was dusted on the inside when I changed out the factory air box and paper element for the AIS. Spend the $200 for the AIS and be done with it.

If that truck is still under warranty it will be void if you install the aftermarket assembly.Any engine related warranty claim you ever have with the truck will be denied when they see it.I've already been there and know what i'm talking about.Installing that system won't help you at all,if you weigh the risks.

DO NOT put a K&N replacement filter, too many horror stories. The filter has to be put in exactly right, and since the fit wasnt exactly right to start with, it wont fit right and youll end up with a dusted engine. I didnt believe it until I pulled mine out one day, and yes, there was dirt in the pipe. Now the FIPK or similar type deals are fine. I personally use the Ford AIS filter setup, best filtration for the Strokes made IMO. Its not as free flowing as some, but for filtration you cant beat it. Oh and my mielage droped when using the K&N.

I have a 2002 Ford F250SD PowerStroke running a K&N intake system. I have over 100,000 miles on it and I clean and re-oil every 10k with no problem. Makes a little more noise sucking air pulling my 7500 lb trailer and I thing the mileage went up 1 mpg.

Was it the K&N replacement style, or the cone shaped deal?

I've got the K&N replacement type on my truck now but I don't care for an oil type air filter.

I put a K&N on mine, gives a little more power, but the fuel mileage dropped some. I think with a better exhaust, it would help a little more.

My mechanic advised not to use k&n air filters. He said because of their larger size you had to make sure you changed them frequently or they could allow dirt into the engine which would cause excessive wear. I"m not a mechanic by any means, just repeating what he said.
