Gas jumped a quarter couple days ago, and another dime today. $3.459 today. This is beginning to hurt big time. Diesel is $4.00 yp from around $3.50 and fairly level all winter. I have a diesel tractor coming from father-in-law"s estate. Am really worried about fuel costs for farming this summer. My hay ain"t gonna be as cheap this year!

NE IL is NUC powered and we have the hightest cost of juice in the nation. Is clean power if they can keep the dirty water from going into the ground water ie., near Morris, Il. Our rates have doubled in the last 6 months. Think of the Simsons when you think of NUC stations and gov regs.

It seems strange to me after reading over 40 posts on this subject,no one mentions NUCLEAR POWER which is the cleanest and cheapest form of electrical energy which would be all that most of us need. Why is this WORD SO DEMONIZED that we dare not use it?There are accidents happening every day in power plants yet not one of then have resulted in death of a human from the use of it. It heats the water to make the steam to turn the turbines the same as using coal, oil, gas, etc. CENTAUR

Nuclear? in reply to CENTAUR, 03-11-2008 14:04:56
No human deaths? I think a few people from Chernobyl and Belarus might disagree. Projections for deaths from the accident are projected to be 60,000 to 90,000 people - depending on which expert you choose to believe. Also, take a look at their national forest that is now "off limits" and will be for a long time. 50,000 miles of land was heavily contaminated, but all of Europe got lesser degrees of the fallout. 20,000 acres that got ruined was farmland, and 30,000 acres was forest. Now,over 20 years later, land is still off limits within a 15 mile radius of reactor site. Seems to me the big problem with nuclear power is the existence of human error and corruption - that will always exist. Such error usually does not have large consequences - but with nuclear power, it does. I'll give you one example in the USA. I live near the Pennsylvania nuclear site that almost blew - e.g. Three Mile Island in 1979. It almost blew because of a huge amount of man-made mistakes. And, what did we learn from that in the USA? Well, there's a nuclear plant not too far from me at Oswego, NY on Lake Ontario. It has been in violation for years with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission because it's emergency containment structure is half rotted out. They have gotten repeated "exemptions" to keep on using the place without fixing it.

The Dodge 350 4x4 is spending more time parked in front of the house.

Guess I will put one of the tractors up for sale.

My question is why do prices vary so much? You will see stations within a mile of each other with as much as .40/gal difference in price. Why is diesel more than regular when it used to be way less than regular? Even more bad news, copied this from Congressman Hensarling"s site - "Last week, House Leadership proposed a budget for the fiscal year 2009, which weighs in at nearly $3.1 trillion and contains the largest tax increase in American history. If not prevented, this tax hike will cost the average American family $3,135 a year".

Manitoba - Doing some math on your $1.149/liter price:

$1.149 liter x 3.78 liter/US gallon x 1.00251 $US/$CDN = $4.354 US/gallon equivalent at your pump.

(The $US/$CDN conversion rate quote is as of 11 AM today.)

----

By comparison gas here in western NY this morning is $3.39. Diesel's now up to $4.15.

Crazy....

Doesn't matter if we drill it in Alaska,or the gulf coast,it is sold on the commodity exchanges and will still be $100+ a barrel.Just because it is drilled and pumped out of US soil,we won't get a discount.

$3.16 here in Western Michigan. Filled up at a small station in town and they had a notice on the door that they were closing the operation this weekend. There are 3 stations within 500 yards and they say they can't compete.

I guess that means the baseline price will be going up next week at the remaining stations.

I remember buying gas for $0.24 one time when I was about 16. I pumped it for a few years and it was in the $0.35 range. Talk of $1.00/gal was like the world would end.

Back in 1976 gas was in the .45 range, when we went to .50, I thought we were gonna be lynched, :-) and that was full service, check oil, fluids, wash windows, air pressure in tires if requested. Now when you buy $3-4.00 fuel, most of the time you get a blank stare from the clerk and not even a thank you.

$3.49 per gallon for regular here in New York. I bet it will be over $5 by next year.

The gas price is only one small issue. The price of everything that's moved by tractor-trailer, farm costs of petroleum based fertilizers, herbicides, etc. and all the people heating their homes with oil and LP, etc.

Makes me want to start driving my firewood-powered truck (collector gas conversion).

My big truck has been parked since September.Part of the reason I am about half mad all the time. When the price of fuel went up the last time, brokers decided they wouldnt pay a fuel surcharge,I decided I wouldnt run without one.Not all of the shippers, but a lot of them. The big companies did pay a fuel surcharge, but they took their sweet time to pay it.The trouble is when its 3.00 a gallon that means the fuel surcharge,to be fair to me,needs to be about 40 cents a mile.So if freight costs 1.50 per mile, that means its 1.90 per mile.A bunch of brokers got together and decided its time for them to offer loads at a discount.I had many loads offered to me for 1.10 per mile, which is what we got when fuel was a dollar a gallon or less.Think I am obsessed with conspiracy? Also nobody is going to do anything about it,not congress, not the company, the only choice is quit,or go broke. It is a conspiracy to make you work for a big company at whatever they can get away with paying you.Next they will have Mexicans in the trucks driving them for nothing and cant even speak English or read it,already do. I live about 1/4 mile from the railroad tracks and there are at least 4 times more trains going through than there were. The trouble is there are container trains, coal trains, and hopper trains hauling grain, stuff that people like me dont haul anyway as I haul food.If it keeps on,looks like food is a low priority,at least with the crooks in charge for now.

4 dollars a gallon diesel is 59 cents fuel surcharge per mile. That puts hauling even cheap stuff like paper towels,or cartons,or boxes to about 2.10 per mile, maybe 2.00 per mile.Is that too expensive?Would you rather do without? You wont get trucks to haul it for 1.10 per mile because they will go broke.Another thing is if the area you want food at doesnt have any freight going the other way thats profitable, its going to cost more to get it shipped there to pay for trucks having to dead head out of there to get a load.

Manitoba,

You use the Imperial gallon I believe, which is a shade larger than our gallon. Anyway, your liter is .26 of our gallon. Haven"t done the math to convert to our gallon accurately, but your $1.15 per liter would make our gallon about $4.50 - $4.60. Makes it even rougher for us poor Americans nowadays because our dollar is getting to be less value than your "Loonie".

I forgot to look at our Wisconsin prices lately, but our gas is higher than Iowa or surrounding states because we have such high gas taxes to pay for unemployment payments, etc, among other things.

Looks like it"s going to be real expensive driving from Ft. Francis to Ear Falls, ONT next summer to entertain walleyes. I don"t even take my boat up there anymore, it"s got a 2 cycle motor and the camp boats are all new 4 cycle which get 3 times better "mileage" for the week. Fishing camps add a couple bucks to local gas prices, but it"s so much fun to be up there it"s worth it.

LA in WI

PS Drove thru southern Manitoba a few yrs ago, it was so flat that one of those elevators in the distance just seemed to be the same distance away from me no matter how long I drove. I stopped and got out just to see if my wheels had fallen off!

I am also from Manitoba. Those prices are similar to what we are paying at Virden (which incidentally is the oil capital of Manitoba). What I have learned over the years is that Canadian gas (at least in my vehicles) gets better mileage from any given volume of gas than US gas. This is only based on driving in Minnesota, Michigan, N Dakota, S Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and Arizona. Good thing I drove in all those states in the past: probably won't be able to in the future.

By the way Manitoba is not really all that flat. Some parts of it are anything but.
