Best advice I can give - never by an automatic 4 wheel drive. My 96 chevy 2500 is an automatic with 4 wheel drive. Its TOTALLY USELESS. The 4wd won"t engage unless it detects slippage. This weekend at the farm I got stuck in 3 inches of soft ground. Tires were spinning, but 4wd would not engage. If tires are spinning isn"t that slippage? Tried rocking back & forth, but wouldn"t budge. I know better than to keep trying and bury the thing down to the axles. Hubby pulled me out with the tractor. He got to see only the 2nd full blown temper tantrum I"ve had in our 20 yrs marriage. I yelled at that worthless piece of junk and planted more than one footprint on the bumper. Yes, the 4wd engaging problem can be remedied by $200 direct linkage at the mechanic"s, but I"m not sinking one more dime into this piece of junk. I bought it used in Nov. of 2000 and have spent over $5,000 in repairs. WORTHLESS PIECE OF JUNK. Its a true Cowboy Cadillac. If all you"re going to do is look cute and run up and down the highway, its fine. But if you need it to do some real work, forget it!

12 year old equipment, in particular combines and highway vehicles are just a money pit to repair, repair, repair. This isn't news.

Several months ago there was a woman named Katherine that had some problems with a used tractor. I bet you two could talk for hours on end about checking things out before buying them. Lose oil pressure on a Cat so you can't even start it and have the ground thaw out all around it. Now that's stuck! $200 for a D7 about 1/2 a mile way to get it out. If the D7 wasn't close it would have cost at least $500 to have a Cat hauled over to pull it out.

I never was a real fan of Chevy, but If you've already sunk that much cash into it, it might be a good idea to trade it off (if you can afford to). I have an F-150 with Auto-trans and 4x4. I LOVE it. It's gotten me out of some nasty spots. This time of year it's especially bad. The top 2-3 inches of the ground thaws and slides on the frozen stuff underneath. With my bad knees, I can't handle driving a manual trans for very long. I've been "up to my ankles" in mud and the auto trans hasn't failed me yet!

Had 99 ford f 150 4x4. Shifter on floor was so hard to move, knob pulled off and I put 12 inch pipe over it to get anywhere. So it then tie rod ends, all 4, I did 'em and electric switch for 4wd, and all brakes by 60K miles. 2005 another ford, much better.

Ok, now I know the correct terminology, thank you John Hagen. My mechanic just didn't get technical on it. The 4wd is the thermal activated and it may take several minutes to engage or it may never engage. Furthermore, if it does engage and your turn the engine off, it may not be engaged when you start up. Tom Holland, your response says a lot about you. As with Walt Davies, I was on grass that turned to mush. Where I got stuck, the ground really wasn't that bad or I wouldn't have been where I was. I had already driven over that area once with no problem. If the 4wd would have engaged, I wouldn't have gotten stuck. As soon as I felt the back end slip, I knew I was in trouble because I could not depend on the 4wd engaging to keep me going to firmer ground. I know my truck and if those wheels spin and 4wd won't kick in, stop. Its a lot easier to get it out if its down just a few inches and not sitting on the axles. I want to trade it off for a 1 ton with a manual tranny. I will never own another automatic. As to Kemper's response, I'm not whining, I'm tired of spending money on this truck. Is it too much to ask that a vehicle go just one year without some sort of major repair? If you want to spend $40 grand on a new vehicle, more power to you. I don't have that kind of money and think its obscene that they cost that much. I don't drive this truck hard. The vast majority of my driving is highway with occasional towing. It had 64,000 miles on it when I bought it. In seven years I've put about 122,000 on it. That's not excessive. Here's what I've fixed so far. Entire cooling system (radiator & water pump, etc), power brake motor, idler arm & pittman on front end, new rear end, air conditioner, idler pully, 6 batteries & 4 alternators (it just eats them and can't find the reason), injector fuel lines, exhaust system, battery cables ($200 because they're Chevy), wiper control panel and this is just what I can remember without pulling the repair file. So maybe I just got a lemon, but it sure soured me on Chevys.

Chevy's have the 2 Hi 4 Hi and 4 low in them on the floor. The thermal things were stupid. We had a 1991 that had 4wd and it must of had it because it never wanted to go in . The 1997 that we have now goes in in a couple seconds. I'm not a fan of the Ford engine and drivetrain but from what I've seen the 4wd is awesome on them.

Ford, for once, had a "better idea". Our 1995 has a lever to select 2 hi, 4 hi or 4 low. When you shift into 4 hi or low, it simply does what it would have done otherwise, but on all 4 wheels rather than the 2 rear. Recall some years back when we had a horse camp off the beaten path, and it got soft on the main road. A very attractive drug-store cowgirl with a $50,000 rig (Chev) couldn't get 4WD to engage, and we ended up pulling her out with our decidely inferior units. I was surprised at the imaginative plans she had for disposing of her rig, vis-a-vis the salesman who had talked her into it. Don't know if the remedy was ever "consummated", so to speak.

You're being plumb silly.

Take the truck to a competent mechanic. Not one that wants to "run a direct linkage" to the actuator.

Well it looks like if you don't want to spend the money to fix it then don't whine about it,any used truck costs money to keep it operational from time to time.Go out and buy a 40 thousand dollar pickup and whine about the payments.

I do drive a Ford. However, if I'm thinking I even might use 4WD I twist the switch going through the gate and use it until I'm back on solid ground - that'll work for ya.

We've had 20 of them and they pull trailers, haul mulch or topsoil or plow snow everyday. Haven't had too much problems. I will admit that the thermo-whatever 4WD engage deal is a little hokey though. That may have been your problem. We keep a couple spares and just change them. But, we've only ever changed 3 since 1989, that's not too bad. Everyone said you couldn't plow snow with an IFS front end, but we've never had a problem. Cranked the heck out of those torsion bars and never changed a one, even on the '89. Never had a motor apart, never changed a transfer case and only bought 5 transmissions (plowing snow doesn't do them any good). All in all, ours have worked out well. Just my 2 cents.

Thats why my Chev. 4X4 is a 4 speed with lock out hubs. Get it stuck in 2 wheel drive climb out lock the hubs in and shift it to 4 wheel drive rock if a little bit and drive away. Automatics are fine for the road but if you want to work your truck a standard is the only way to go

Nancy, grab a bat, hammer or other blunt tool and beat the snot out of one of the tire treds. It will make you feel a lot better without wrecking anything that cost $$ to replace.

I am not sure if a 96 still has the thermal actuator to lock the front axle in 4WD, but if it does, they were a major PITA that often took up to two minutes after you put it in 4WD to lock the axle. The conversion to the motorized actuator makes a totally different truck out of them, which shifts to 4WD in under 5 seconds.

If yours still has the slow thermal actuator, then you need the motorized actuator, and the spacer and wiring harness adapter. I converted mine (92 model)2 years ago and think it is well worth it. I also looked at that manual cable operated conversion, but was afraid that in freezing temps, ice might lock it either in or out of 4WD. Coming from the guy who declared that this 92 Chevy is the worst piece of crap I have ever owned, I must say that front axle actuator conversion is an absolute joy to use compared to the thermal actuator.

Buy a Ford the only time I have ever got my Ranger stuck was when i buried it up to the frame in a field of grass with water base. Ford lock up the rear end Chevy doesn't when in 4 wheel drive. Take a test drive put one in 4WD then turn it sharp on hard surface the Ford will fight it all the way around the Chevy will just make a smooth turn.

My tracks where i got stuck.

What does this temper look like? I think I wouldn't mind such things on film, but I'd pass on having it in person. btdt everyday.
