Any harm? Some of the tractorides I attend provide fueling stations, It is Iowa so they wanna be politically correct with all the farmers and so pretty much the only thing availabe is soy biodiesel. Any thing I should be worried about? Running an early 60's JD 3010.

Bio Diesel raises the levels of Nox emmissions.
Nox emmissions cause cancer.I would be sure the exhaust stack was plenty high.

I make biodiesel for a living if you have not used it before it will clean your system out and it will swell rubber. even if you think well my system is clean I never got any dirt in it it builds over time and anything in there bio will clean out so have a couple filters on hand when you first start using it.

Hi Dell,

A few years back I was researching biodiesel and ran into a report produced by the U of ID about a study they conducted using raw vegie oil(SVO or straight vegetable oil) in IDI diesels.
At running 100% SVO at 500hrs they found the IDI engines would gum the top piston rings and the injector nozzle seats to where they needed tore down and cleaned.

There conclusion of testing was anything less than a 50/50 mix of SVO/No2 had no extra effect on engine maintance without heating the fuel before injection.

Biodiesel is NOT raw vegie oil but oil that has the glycerin removed or the substance that causes the rings and injectors to plug.
The home-brew biodiesel community contends that first heating SVO or WVO(waste vegetable oil) to 150ºf plus before injecting will also stop piston ring and injector nozzle gumming on DI diesel engines.
I personally will reserve my thoughts on WVO, specificly used fryer oil, use until a few years have passed until WVO has a long time proven track record.

My son, a ASE diesel mechanic, worked at a sod farm where they maintained 400 pieces of diesel equipment and the standard practice was to drop used motor oil into the fuel tanks of the engines that the oil was changed on. He stated that in 6yrs he worked there that He didn't see any adnormal fuel system problems from this practice.

Another interesting read was on Journey Forever.com that tested 15% biodiesel in commerical produced gasoline and home made alcohol fuel in moderen gasoline engines without smoking or any ill side effects.

I ran my '54 Fordson Major for the last 2 summers on B10. I might have put in only 25-30 hrs each year on it, but it ran fine.

Other than the need for more frequent oil changes mentioned in my tractors service manual.. it doesn't mention much else about biofuel.. etc.

Thanks for the help, It sounds like i should be ok. This is generally reputable source. It is usually FS or some other local supplier who caters to the AG business. Certainly not home-brew. I do not know the percentage. I take it biodiesel is just like ethanol then in it really is a mix of the new farm grown stuff in some ratio with the traditional stuff? B5 = 5% B20=20% soybean fuel, just like E85 = 85% ethanol?

All diesel fues in Minnesota are 2% for over a year.

If this is certified fuel, and not some home-brew, it should be good for the engine - the soy adds lubricity that the ultra low sulfur stuff lost.

(If it's home-brew, folks have different ideas of what is biodiesel; some are straight frier oil which needs to be handled differently in your fuel system, some are doing their own processing & it's up to them to have good quality control....)

Only thing is that it does clean out the gunk in the fuel system, do you can plan on getting a dirty fuel filter earlier than normal.

Everything else is a plus on any blend up to 20%. Lot of folks are going up to 505 even, but sounds like good to go in all cases at 20% or less.

If you use B5 you won't have any problems.I have used as high as 20% soydieseel in the older diesels.

It all depends on exactly what the fuel is. Certified biofuel at the pump can have just as good lube, and sometimes better then pump diesel.

Rotary pump on a 3010 is less tolerant than an inline pump - so be careful what you buy.
