Did I get your attention? Wife and I were talking this afternoon, she had a bad day and hit me with this. If you die, I don't know where to start figuring out all that you are involved in. I decided I will make a list and keep with farm records. Seed and herbicide are bought and paid for, 2000 bu corn sold for river open, all corn in bins is sealed, needs to be released before being sold, operating loan at bank, oxygen bottle is leased. Would your spouse know all these type of things? Do you own equipment with a neighbor? Contracted and paid for future delivery on anything? Got any money tucked away somewhere for a rainy day? Oh ya, block and pistons for JD 70 are at the machine shop, done and paid for. Some of you are fortunate enough to have a spouse that is an active part of your business or hobby, the rest of us, our spouse don't know or care a dang bit about what we are doing out here. If something happens to us, will they ever be able to get it all straightened out? We all need a will, I'm going to make one out as soon as I can figure out what to leave each kid. But, what about the day to day stuff that you didn't think she needed to know or were too busy to talk about. Let's see what you all have to say about this. Chris

It's Not important what you leave when you die --- want's important is where your Soul is going when you die --- that's for eternity -- and that's a very long time .... some thing to ponder

The kids would suddenly become wealthier, probably spend a bunch, and sure wouldn't be worried about a few thousand dollars lost along the way from not having details about the daily operations. I would be dead and wouldn't care either.

We"ve tried to do a will several times, but just
end up arguing. We"ve got no sons, just 1 daughter who"s married to an idiot who"s "too
dumb to change his own oil". 2 grandsons are
worthless zombies who only know how to watch
videos and whine. It"s all about tools and guns.
I"ve many long guns,(no pistols)and thousands of
dollars of Snap-on tools, as a retired locomotive
mechanic. Son-in-law would pawn everything and
buy status symbels until broke. I"ve 2 nephews
who are mechanics and hunters, but wife hates em,
wants everything willed to daughter. Guess i"m
going to slowly slip stuff to nephews while i"m
alive. when I pass, with no will, she"ll find
empty toolboxes in the shop. Trouble is--I need
those tools everyday now, can"t stand to part
with them. The seldom used ones, now, are the ones
needed on the next project!

An excellent reminder to us all..... ... I started working on my property descriptions last week. It hit me, not when my divorce was final but when the ex and I signed the deeds over that since my will had changed I needed to do something to make sure my cousins who I selected as executors of my estate knew where stuff was and what to do with what. It hit me, they dont know which banks I have accounts with, what equipment I have, and who owes me money. I made a list of everything and gave them a copy in an envelope along with a copy of my will. It can happen fast, I learned that in '06 when I got hurt. When I look back I still dont know why I didnt die that day, but I didnt.

My wife is barely involved with the farm.

But if I die she will handle it just fine.

The bank will let her know wwhat I owe.

The ag suppliers will tell her what is paid for. They are not crooks.

And all will work out. It did with my father when he died.

That attorney that handles the estate, and gets his precentage, has to do something to earn it.

But I do have a will.

My brother talks into his pocket recorder on every transaction, and then puts it on his computer in his spare time. He is much more organized than me so if something happened his kids would have to listen to some tapes, but they would have time for that.

As you drive down the road and meet a car, just think how fast it could happen. My mother would never let all us kids, 5 plus spouces etc ride in a buss tour or anything just in case something happened. Just something she worried about.

I have a list of alot of where my junk is supposed to go to. That is the families that I purchased it from years ago. Just seems like the right thing to do as my kids have never been interested in my old tractors unless we sell one.

While we are on the subject everyone may want to do the ICE (in case of emergency) thing on their cell phones. label ICE 1, ICE 2 etc for the contacts In Case Emergency. It makes it easy for the cops to contact the correct folks.

I personaly have junk paid for five years ago that I have not picked up, and folks that owe me lots of money that isn't written down. I'm a very poor business man.

Speaking from personal experience, nothin g breaks up a family quicker than money. Easy fixes:
1. Spend all you can on what you enjoy. You earned it, you're entitled to use it for your purposes.
2. Make good will and deal with everyone fairly. Don't wait--time will come sooner than you think!!
3. Remember your belief in God and His teachings.
Hope I have w hile before all this means anything. There's lots more tractors out there that need me.

My wife is 13 years older than I am and she is always after me to write down things but you know it changes daily so i just sit back and wait and maybe just maybe I will live longer.

PS If I don't i don't think i will be worrying about it much after the fact.

I've tried to teach my wife and kids how to go on living after I'm gone. I have enough life insurance to pay off the house and to bury me, and to leave a little for other expenses to boot. After I'm gone, I won't have any say about my stuff anymore--and it IS just STUFF. I'm 8 years older than my wife, so despite her health problems the odds are she'll outlive me.

But I don't know if they'll ever get the smile off her face once I'm gone.

If I die tomorrow, my wife will be out of debt. That's something to celebrate, I don't care WHO you are. Then, the only complaints she could possibly have are about her health, because I sure as heck won't be a pain in her backside anymore...then maybe she can find somebody whose words and actions DO please her.

i had my will done when my daughter was born, since then it gets updated every few years as necessary. my attorney specializes in estate planning, so most all aspects of my wife's and i estate are pretty well done. eventually, we will all meet our maker, but to pass on without a will can be a nightmare for spouses and children.

My previous comment was no way intended to be taken as hateful. Talking about death today, with all the sickness and tragedy around us is not a spirited conversation to me. All it does is upset older people who may be sick or upset about getting older. As far as needing to get a life. We have one now and should cocentrate on staying healthy and safe with the rest of our lives not dwelling on doom and gloom. I have a great life and am not a complainer. Enjoy the wonderful life god has given you. If I hit a nerve I appoligize, but hate full? You my friend couldnt be farther off the mark. God bless you, and I wish for you your friends and family a long happy and health life.

I prepare Wills for my clients who wish them but I also do some small estate planning where Wills arent really as necessary. The short answer is LAWS OF INTESTATE SUCCESSION detemine who takes what n what shares if the decedent dies intestate and if that just happens to be the same ones they wish to take (would leave by Will) alls fine buttttt ttttt if they wish to distribute their property otherwise, BEST HAVE A VALID WILL..... .. And, of course theres all that Trust and Living Trust (revocable and non revocable) can of worms we can delve into

Other lil tidbits, one can disinherit a child BUT NOT a spouse cuz they can elect to take against the will..... ...A living person has no heirs..... .....As one grows old there is a good argument its better if they own near to nothing..... ....and I advise certain clients (depends on situation n their desires) to reduce what will be their "estate" to near zero by means of inter vivos transfers which withstand Medicare scrutiny (if thats possible lol)

Yall take care now

All my problems will be solved. What happens next will not be within my control.
Hope my loved ones treat each other in the same manner I have tried to treat them.Unfortunately money and petty bickering can cause problems during times when a famiy should come together. This caused big problems on one side of my parents family.
With children ages 17 till 2 I hope my time is decades from now.The reality of my recent family history(both parents died at 52 y/o) demands a conversation with an insurance agent.Being the oldest male in the extended family at 45 doesn't bode well for longevity. Sure hope I enjoy some of dearest grandmothers family genes. She lived 98 years in fine health and he father died at 95 in a tractor accident.Funny people born during the 1800's in Ireland would outlive their children by 40 years.

It doesn't do any good to make a will. My wife says "why did you give this to your brother? Why did you give this to your other brother?" On and on and on, I guess they'll get it fought over after I'm dead and won't care nohow.

Well if I'd die tommorrow , my soul would be in heaven & my body cremated . I'm divorced , my girls have no desire to come in to see me at my home while I'm alive . I've asked them to come in & help me get it inventoried & estimated so they'd know what to do . But since they care less about dear ole Dad , when I'm dead I'll leave all the mess for them to figure out themselves . My cremation & burial is paid for & any bills I have, they can worry about getting paid themselves also since they have no interest now . I told them it would be my treat to them . I just hope they don't just give my collection away but get a good price for all of it . God bless, Ken

First thing you need to know, is why do you think God should let you into his heaven. Other things are important too, but your spouse will have the rest of their lives to figure it out. I do tell my wife I owe no man anything undocumented and ignore all creditors and predators.

If I died tomorrow, my wife and child get enough $$ to pay for the house and student loans we have out. As for what I own, I would have to depend on Dad and my brother to deal with the antiques on the farm. Titles, important paperwork, etc. all have their own folder in the safe. We need to get a will made up to provide for our daughter, going to do it this summer...

That's a good idea. I know that when a couple of my friends died suddenly, there was a lot of stress and confusion in the families over what to do, when to do things and who does what? And who owes what? And don't be surprised if some relatives or children show up with thier hand out.

A long married couple came upon a wishing well. The wife leaned over, made a wish and threw in a penny. The husband decided to make a wish too,but he leaned over too far, fell into the well and was drowned.
The wife was stunned for a moment but then smiled and said "It really works."
