I bought the 400 this morning, worked on it this evening. I got the intake manifold off, I got 17 bolts out of each head , but i have a problem, the heads will absolutely not come off. We hammered on them and hit them with a chisel. i dont want to hit them too hard for fear of cracking them or chipping the block. Were going to try and get a putty knife under and then get a screwdriver in. What would you guys suggest?

If using the 3.75" crank. 6.0" rods will be required to reduce the side loading on the cylinder walls and piston skirts to manageable levels. ARP studs mains, rods and cylinder heads. GM factory cast iron heads are useless if attempting 300+HP. And by the time you fix up a set with guids, valves, springs, retainers after crack checking and machining. It's no more expensive to purchase new, have something that flows for 400+HP and takes 40+ lbs of weight from the engine. Aluminum heads are less prone to detonate than cast iron heads under otherwise identical circumstances. Edelbrock sells a cam, intake and carb matched to work together with their heads. Performer RPM S/B Chevy

* Designed for 302, 327, 350 and 400 c.i.d. engines up to 1986 PERFORMER RPM WITH ANGLED PLUGS
Chamber Size Intake Port Size Valve Sizes (in/ex) Complete (single)

Caleb, you still have bolts in there somewhere!
if a hammer handle in an intake port won't pop it, you still have it bolted on!

don't mind the naysayers- have fun building it up!

Caleb,

Just take the handle of your breaker bar and stick it in one of the ports from the center.

Pop it upwards with the heel of your hand and that head will rock right back on those dowel pins.

Allan

man, you are flat out just too damn heavy. No long term gain? what about life experience? HOW ABOUT NO LONG TERM LOSS? you sound like my mom did 30 years ago- thank God for my dad!fooling with that "old junk" gave me a LIFE!
Read his posts-
This 23 year old kid just bought a 3 bedroom 3 bath house on acreage, with a woman that he's about to marry- which means that he also has a JOB because he got the loan AFTER the subprime debacle. As the song says, THAT'S SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF. Listen to that song someday- that's how MOST of us lived. Now, if he was building some obscure Buick junk (other than a GN or a GS), he'd be wasting his time...:> Caleb, build that Nova now and have fun with it- you'll be pimping it down the road in 2 years when the first baby comes along, and I AM BETTING YOU WILL GET EVERY PENNY BACK.
IT'S BETTER THAN TATOOS OR CRYSTAL METH!

You mean this "Alas. So much time and money spent for no long term gain". What is a 15-16 year old going to do with a 400+HP 37 year old car? He should be studying in school and saving that money for an education. Or he"s going to turn into another baffled American making $10.00hr. Feeling robbed because he can"t afford fuel, a 4X4, a big house and will never be out of debt. I put off my hot car until I was 24, out of school, had a couple of pay promotions, owned a house and was making $20.00+ per hour in the 1980"s. Ever hear of delayed gratification?

caleb, take a wooden hammer handle and stick into one of the ports and then pull the handle at the other end then if it is still stuck use a rubber mallet or dead blow hammer to hit the head while pulling if still no good and now that I think about it just put something in the valley and use a long handle in the port and use the thing in the valley as a fulcrum (pivot point) so you will have enough leverage to pry it off

Sure you got ALL the bolts? Manifold is off, right? Can you take a piece of steel about 2 foot long with a right angle on the end and bolt this to something on head so you can put a little muscle to rock the head back and forth? Leverage?

if the motor isnt stuck and you can get a starter hooked up to it, pll the spark plugs on the bank you want to remove, thread some rope (cotton clothes line works good,) into the spark plug holes and bump the motor over with the starter, when the piston comes up, the rope will push the head off.

Excellent music selection. Have you heard the new duo Dailey and Vincent sing "By The Mark"? My new favorite gospel song.
