I was sitting at a light waiting for it to turn green. Brake pedal didn't feel right so I pushed on it real hard. It went all the way to the floor and then would not pump back up. I had just pasted the parts store so I put the truck in granny and slowly drove around the block. Wouldn't have been so bad but I had a trailer on behind and it was school bus time. New master cylinder on and then went on the the auction and picked up a few things. But I about lost something when that happened

Say, at least it went bad while you were waiting for the light to go GREEN instead of RED or YELLOW!

That happened on my 1980 K-10 chevy, to the floor, just as the town road intersects with the state road, right after the rock cut, so you can't see until you get right to the end at least I had begun slowing down and did not end up getting t-boned, don't remember what exactly I did, but that feeling when it happens you don't forget.

Just like someone else mentioned, same thing, mentioned this one on here before, got going backwards down a hill, 1980 F-800 10 ton of crushed stone on, would not make the hill in 2nd or 1st if you want to call it that the next one down is real low but I should have used it had I known that truck had no power. Well maybe inexperience maybe not, never had a single axle die out like that on a hill that was steep but not unsafe, the 370 was a gutless wonder, stalled, no hydro vac brakes, let out the clutch, front end almost came up over, broke the rear end pinion or some other gear, still headed backwards, never panic'd, put er in the ditch like I should have in the first place, would'nt have broke the rear I suppose, she had too much speed to try and lock er in gear to stop, good thing was not to panic and think, or I'd have gotten some serious speed and the end of the road was a T into a field with rocks jutting up, and who knows what else. The tandem mack was in the yard sitting too, when in doubt just take the bigger heavier more powerful truck, it would have walked right up that hill.

That sinking feeling is priceless though isn't it ???

we had a valve in the brakes go out in a gravel truck at work, talk about a fun ride. lucky the guy driving knew what happened and just started down shifting and got slowed down enough that the truck didn't keep rolling forward when we got back to the shop. that was a little bit interesting to have happen on an air brake system, ususally we just rip off the air lines on limbs and stuff sticking out of the ground, or the diaphram in the brake can ruptures.

[quote="Dan-IA"](quoted from post at 22:32:32 02/29/08) I blew a brake line on a date with an ex-classmate from school. still put 80 miles on the car with no brakes, but I didn't win any speed records that night.

Been there, not much fun is it. I was on a date in the 91 thunderbird i used to own. Just finished dinner and she wanted to go to the beach. Came over a dark rise in the road (2 lane highway) and there in the middle of the lane was...a bike rack. Ya know like the kind you can strap on the back of your car. Managed to get over a bit but still flattened it with the drivers side. Brakes went all soft and mushy :( Luckily i was only about 2 miles from home so i just took the next back road there. It's pretty darned embarrassing to have your dates father have to come pick her up. Tore the line going to the rear axle right off just behind the front wheel. Fortunately it also kind of crunched it closed so i didn't lose all brakes.

When I used to work for the county we had old Chevy C70 dump trucks that were prone to blowing wheel cylinder at inoportune times. I was dumping dirt off the shoulder of the road when one went. Just rolled straight backward into the ditch. Another guy was dumping dirt on top of a long steep hill when one went. He was going down backward about the speed of sound with the box up. Luckily he thought to lower the box and came to rest right side up about 1/4 mile away in a rose bush. He gets on the radio and says now I know what they mean by "you can do any thing in DVDs."

Definitely would not drive I35, 80, or 380 that way though. Those drivers are nuts!

Kinda did the same thing with my old 91 F150 with 3000# of stone in a trailer. Blew a rear brake line, not a fun thing. Came home 6 miles in 1st gear. New rear lines and we're OK now.

THE HILL FROM HELL in reply to old, 02-29-2008 14:02:10
I was 15 combining peas for the cannery. It was later in the season so they were swapping out the newer, bigger tractors to prepare for the corn pack. I ended up with a old 560 towing this monster combine. Traveling between fields I was falling behind until "THE HILL FROM HELL" :^O Who's the moron who thought of locking the brakes together? Started slow, engine 1500 rpm, 2500 rpm, 3500 rpm, brake, ft tires skid sideways, let up on brakes, gaining speed, engine gona blow, clutch, ft tires bouncing off ground from combine rocking, cars going 65 ahead, pass cars, mile to slow down, enter field, crew boss "where's Pardoon?", he was behind me, nowhere to be found. 5 min. Pardoon arrives and I signal him "silence"

I would say that you were very lucky gentlemen, to escape those situations without bending iron or far worse, yourselves or others. It can happen in the blink of an eye.

I know the feeling. I had the pedal go to the floor once on an old grain truck. I was unloaded luckly but still very scary.

Got one this afternoon. in reply to old, 02-29-2008 14:02:10
I was southbound on I-79 and some bleach blonde woman in a Maroon Dodge truck decided to lock up the brakes in the left hand lane to make an illegal U-turn. With the traffic, speed, and blinding spray, it was a recipe for disaster. I was following the truck in front of me at a distance that he was just out of sight in the spray, a good ways behind him due to the visibilty. As we topped a hill I saw brakelights and slowed accordingly. Even under hard braking, I was catching up quickly. I then decided to hit the median to increase my odds of not hitting him. I saw that the truck in front of him had done the same. I got it hauled down in time and looked in my rearview to see the other cars doing everything they could to avoid a collision. One Subaru went to far wide and slid clear across the median. Oncoming traffic saw this and slowed accordingly to avoid hitting him as his front bumper was in that lane.

Basically, what I saw was a whole lot of people doing exactly what they needed to do to stay alive when one woman decided that it was too inconvenient to go on to the next exit to turn around. She made her turn and then decided to flip off all the people that she had caused to crash/stop. I feel very certain that she is not long for this world with her current driving skills. I just wonder who she is going to take with her. I feel fairly lucky to be uninjured and even more so not to be on the end of a tow trucks hook. Wow, what a day.

The police were 30 seconds behind her looking over the scene trying to figure out what had caused it. Not sure if they figured it out or not.

I had every stick of wood ya could stack on a 3/4 ton chevy and on top of the hill . We had just bulldozed a new road so it was fairly smooth , the hill about a 1/4 mile long . Just as I started over the hill my master cylinder went out . Auto trans. and I was scootin . Buddy was behind me in a S-10 and could`nt figger out what was goin on and said wood was flyin everywhere . The bottom of the hill ended in a cow lot full of cows and I was lucky most of`em were at the other end of the lot and the mud was fairly deep . I just headed for the deepest spot and came to a nice slow rest . It bit a hole through the shorts , the pants , a hole in the seat AND left a puddle on the floor !!!!

Brakes were acting weird on my Dad's 82 Dodge power ram, so I looked under the hood and saw that the previous owner capped off all the vaccum hoses and even capped off the one that went to the brake cylinder, I don't know why he would do that. I hooked it up again and now they work better.

Nervously LOL....That brake to the floor is a sickening feeling. So is the broken clutch cable. Whenever I've had to change a master cylinder; I've usually had to do it twice. Thank goodness for the guarantee.
