when I haul 2 or 3 - 5 gallon cans of gas in my pick up truck with a case of oil in the back of the bed do I need flammable or hazardous placards on the side of my truck,,, these should be put right next to my usdot number right??

wait I feel like picking my nose do I need a permit for that too,,,

give me a break its a drum of oil, put it in the truck bring it to the destination and do the job,,, lets have all kinds of regulations for everything that we do,,,

as long as its strapped down and he isnt "LOOKING" for a place to find out if he needs the thing placarded who's gonna stop him.

Is your son willing to take the hazmat CDL license test every two yrs, go for his physical for the cdl and everything that goes with it??

give me a break,,

wait what was the question,,,,

If you dont exceed 100lbs aggregate gross weight of one class of material, you don't need to placards for anything under 1001 lbs, thats from my motor carrier saftey regulations pocket book. It is a little out dated though. Hope this helps

"Materials of trade" (MOTs) exception: (49CRF 173.6)

Maximum of 440 lbs.

Gasoline/diesel maximum container size 8 gallons.

Pickup box tanks must be built and labeled to DOT specifications. 440 lbs limitation limits tank size to 119 gallons.

All containers must be securely held in place and no leakage allowed.

Don't beleive any placarding is needed unless you are hauling more that 110 gallons. This exempts tanks in the back of farm pickups used to supply tractors and such in remote fields.

big jt is correct, small quantites do not require placards. It is however prudent not to carry gasoline or any fuel for that matter in an enclosed space.

I think very many regulations on very many things we take for granted are being preposed these days, and we will wake up one morning very surprised.

No dust allowed - epa.
I hear hazmat rules are changing a lot, and we will be surprised how hard it is to get NH3, oil, tires, etc. transported.
Tax on water - even your own well as govt owns the water....
On & on & on.

Farmers have been exempt from a lot of this in the past, but not much longer. We are now being looked at as a business, and will need to follow the same rules, and the rules are getting much, much stricter.

I agree with Paul, we farmers have it pretty easy compared to commercial companies. Anything over eight feet (8 1/2 now?) wide had to have apermit. If you went down a highway with something as wide as a 36 ft. combine you needed an escort plus always a state permit. Being as farming is a big business now get ready cause we are going to start new rules very soon.
