does any body know roughly what 400 chevy engine weighs? what does block wiegh? What does complete engine weigh?

A 400 with cast-iron heads weighs around 575 lbs.

That surprises me about the Mark I 348/409. As I recall, the whole idea for what ultimately became the trimmed down Mark IV big blocks was to cut the weight down from the Mark I so could have big block power in Corvettes to go up against big Fords and Chryslers without messing up the 55/45 front to rear weight ratios for handling too much. The Mark IV changed it to 60/40, as I recall, and the Mark I was going to pretty much not make it a handling car at all because of its weight.
