All of us have been stung many times by the nasty things. Here's how I deal with them. When I spot a nest I'll wait until its dark. Then I'll take a good flashlight and some of the wasp/hornet spray that will shoot about 15 ft. I shine the light on the nest just long enough to soak it good then turn it off. They don't know where you are in the dark. I've never gotten stung doing it this way even when I had to use a ladder to get to the nest. Make sure you use a good wasp/hornet spray. The other insect sprays are a slow kill.

Could just be me but lighting up the nest is just so satisfying. Had a jumbo size nest about 10 feet up a maple right behind the back porch. Damn thing was at least football size and full of those white faced little buggers. They always seem to be the mean ones. Didn't notice it until i was mowing under the tree and met the welcoming party. Took a few wax paper cups and put em on the end of one of those long aluminum pool poles. Lit it and placed directly under the opening to the nest. Went up like the hindenburg and as i had the flames right under the only exit most ended up cooked. The rest were a bit singed and in no shape to try to sting. Your results may vary, if in a flammable location i like starting spray.

Starting fluid is my best choice. It's cheap and dosen't stain paint or wooden surfaces.

This is a breeze.. we have the black and yellow European wasps and if annoyed will attack wholesale..

They navigate by the sun so if a white light is used you could be in trouble. At night cover it with thin red paper[cellophane] and can walk right up to the hole in safety.

Are you a gardner?...Vegetable dust which contains CARBARYL is best.. sprinkle outside hole..wasps walk over it....takes it into nest..
quick acting.

Take a large plastic drinking glass, fill over half full with warm water swirled with dish soap. Walk up under the nest and just sling the whole glassfull all over the nest in one motion. The wasps will never get close to you. I was skeptical till I saw it done and became an instant believer.

The soapy water does two things... 1, it wets their wings so they can't fly, 2, Insects breathe through their exoskeletons and the coating of soap suffocates them pretty quickly. Most of whats on the nest will fall to the ground instantly and stay there. Non-toxic and non-flamable. Been doing this for years and have never been stung.

As a painting contractor, we always used a bucket partially full of mineral spirits. Does the same thing and the thinner evaporates real fast.

Around here, using conventional counter attack methods, only when they absolutely must to go, and it's a nice hot saturday afternoon, there's a no vacancy sign on the nest, and it's just as plumb full of wasps as it gets for the year, have no fear, just take a long stick and do poke well, actually though, one harrassing jab will suffice, don't go after it like a pi~nata ! That is of course, AFTER handing out the tennis rackets! Now to be in the game you cannot be allergic and you must have a really quick, and accurate swing, sharp eyesight.

In the nuclear, biological, chemical department, basically anything that's in the garage in an automotive, solvent type aerosol gets preference, although just about anything that come out of a rattle can will do a number on em.

Also in the small arms department, older air type guns, ones you can pump up lightly, do wear eye safety protection, actually don't try this, but for the larger targets like bumble bees, it does work well if you are a good shot.

Using green technology, a high presssure hose nothing less than 5/8" dia garden hose, does wonders on em too.

Incendiary department, well if it's a non combustible thing like ad old bulldozer blade they're in, then fill the compartment with safe amount of flammable vapor, (you know how that goes, always too much) a quick shot of ether will do, have seperate source of ignition ready, well don't try this either. I do like the ones that go down in a trail of smoke.

Well, we had fun as kids, still do the tennis racket thing once in awhile, the yellow paper wasps here are not too aggressive, they bumble around fly in out, you don't get stung, it's hard to nail em too. Your local species may vary in agressiveness, study em first, helps a lot when they have to go.

And, for the most part, if they're around and not on or in something that I need to get on or in, or pose no hazard to anyone, I just leave em bee ! I do notice many kinds of bees around the garden and anything that flowers, fruit trees, ok if they're not a problem.

I dont understand why everyone wants to kill wasp and bee,s. Dont they help polinate our food source? We have a shortage of honey bee,s and it seems to me we should be makeing sure that they stick around to help the honey bee,s out. Maybe I am looking at this all wrong. Sam

There"s a difference between wasps and bees. I haven"t had to kill any bees, outside of one or two that get in the house. But wasp nests under the hood of the tractor, the cover on the propane tank, the picnic table, the deck, the sheds, etc. just isn"t good for me.

I keep a 1 gallon pumpup sprayer with a solution of 1 cup dawn dish washing liquid and fill the rest up with water. It's cheap, very effective, and safe. The sprayer can spray 10-12 feet and it kills them as good as gasoline. I don't know why it works but it does. I use it around my feed bins and propane tanks, been doing it for years.

Last fall we tore down an old pole barn. The wasps had made nests all over in the trusses. We didn't get stung once during the whole tear down. After we were done I was gathering up tools and I walked by a picnic table and one flew out of tubes holding the wood benches and nailed me. Got the spray out and gave them a bath.

I don't wait till dark and I don't use a bug spray. I use carb cleaner in the spray can and it kills them fast. I can't afford to get stung by them or I could end up in a hospital

Old ---

They spend the day time hours looking for food...if you spray the nest during the day ,your going to miss some.....they are like chickens they go to bed early.....

I understand that, I was a bee keeper at one time till something happened to make it so I could not longer work with the bees. Lets just say 150-200 stings do funny things to a person. Spraying a nest during the day keep you from getting stung and then after you spray the nest you remove it and the wasps do not come back for very long because they lost there home and then move some place else. Oh by the way 150-200 stings will KILL the common person

ether will knock them down, but won't always kill them. its fun to hit them with ether when they are flying, and watch them drop. Many times they will come back up before they hit the ground.

Brake cleaner (spray kind) works great. Costs about 1/2 or less then half of wasp spray.

I had a yellow jacket nest up high under a gable. I didn't want to use any type of fluid as it would mess up the siding. I loaded up my .50 muzzleloader and stuffed a wad of wet newspaper down the muzzle. I used a very small amount of powder. Anyway, set it off and "SPLAT"

Totally obliterated the wasp nest. And the animal rights people would have approved, as the wasps never knew what hit them.

Am I warped?

I always use a can of starting fluid. We had a huge yellow jacket Nest in our Barn and in our stacked straw. One can of starting fluid killed them all. And for the yellow jackets that make nests in the ground, it only takes 1/2 cup of gasoline to kill them. Just pour it in the hole at night and let the fumes do the rest.
