neat things seen - I saw the shuttle fly over when it was piggy-back on the 747, I see a gazillion stars when we are at the farm and no city lights. We have a huge red-tailed hawk I named Rex because he's so big that has learned we won't hurt him. When we get out on the tractors, he shows up to see if we stir anything up. He has even landed in the field less than 20 ft from my hubby. twice I have walked out on the patio to find a turtle come to call. Watched and photographed a locust emerging from its chrysalis. Have seen some very large moths and even a couple of the beautiful green Luna moths. Have seen brilliant fall foliage that is more brilliant because it on your place. Have drunk cool spring water that comes out of a rock about 100 yds from the house. Have seen deer less than 50 yds from the house. I could go on an on. The pic above was taken at our pond this fall.

One of my favorite activities while I'm on the farm during the spring or summer is to pitch manure into our 100 IH spreader and pull it behind the Farmall A to be spread. Good old fashioned manual labor sure makes a man feel good at the end of the day!

After growing up and living on a farm for nearly 20 years of my life I've spent several years in town for college and now on my 4th year in the city down here in AZ... I don't enjoy the city life, and I don't enjoy being around so many people.

I miss the farm, I miss the wildlife, birds chirping, deer in the yard, beautiful sunsets without any houses blocking them, sunrises that are so beautiful that you could just about cry, and the quiet of all the life before a storm... then the absolute beauty of a summer storm rolling in and watching the lightning, listening to the thunder, and feeling the cool rain drops.

Dang, I can't wait to retire and move back to the farm.

Watching a meteor storm and sleeping in lawn chairs all night long.

I personally like places that have four distinct seasons which you surely have with fall foliage like that. Having said that, I wouldn't wish a Wisconsin winter on my worst enemy unless they wanted it. Mr Bob in eastern Ohio wouldn't come within 500 miles of my place in winter. I still like it and most of us do quite well with it. My folks lived well up into their late nineties and right now I have two aunt Margarets, one is 95 and the other 98. So the cold isn't all bad. I've been to all of the 48 lower states and Hawaii and always prefer those with four seasons. I met a fellow in Arizona who moved from Ill and took over the operation of the Gila Bend airport. After about 20 years there, he moved back to Ill. He said, "I've had my fill of this g-- d----- desert".

Deer in the beaver meadow across the stream. Black Bear and Moose on the road. Beaver, a half-dozen varieties of ducks, Canada geese, Blue Heron, fishers, martins and foxes in and around the stream that forms my back property line. Bald Eagles nesting just upstream from my place.

Unfortunately, there's also skunks, porcupines, coyotes, racoons, black flies, mosquitoes, starlings and no-see-um's, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I would rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than in any city I ever saw country life is best

In the last week, in my backyard, I have seen;

Deer every few days
Ducks twice daily
Hawk eating a duck
Squrrels
Many types of birds
Possum
Bald eagle

The difference is that I live in the city well within the city limits and a half mile from a major shopping mall. Nowhere near the edge of the metropolitan area.

You,Mrs. Nancy Howell , need to get a copy of Patricia Leimbach's All My Meadows. See here:

Link

Given your penchant for the joys of country life , I believe you will find that it speaks toyou. Leimbach was for years aregular contributor to Farm Journal magazine. The book, I believe, collects her essays.

First calf born Monday. Let me walk up to within 15 feet, Mama just watched. Then the calf walked up to me, nuzzled my leg, and let me rub it all over for about 5 minutes. Nothin finer and softer than baby calf hair. I just love living in the Country.

I hate to break this to you, Allen, but loaded behind your tractor is the byproduct of good livestock management. It is not a bad thing. The tractor will haul it to a field and it will be gone. Even with the manure, life in the country beats life in the city.

That's certainly a unique spreader Allan. I don't see any apron chains, nor do I see a hyd cyl to dump it. Does the front gate move back or do you just spread while going uphill? (:>)).

HaHaHa Allen, I swear, only you could come up with that scene to go with such beautiful thoughts as had been mentioned before. I enjoy your post so much (and I learn a little) that if you didn't post I'd probably not be on here much. DD

I've seen a lot of neat things too. We saw the space shuttle go over in orbit one time, it's just a dot of light at dusk, but man it moves fast. There's a couple of small airports around so we see biplanes and stunt planes on occaision, B-17's and military aircraft as well. We've had a hot air balloon land in the back yard, and blimps flying over too. I have a 3 acre pond across the road from me, so we get the reflection of the setting sun in the pond. And you pic reminds me of the creek on the back of my property, make the water in your pic 20 feet wide and that's what the creek looks like. I've learned to see the beauty in flowering weeds and the different smells of spring, summer and fall. You can't get that in the city.
