I purchased a oil pressure guage, but it comes with a plastic line to connect to the engine. I really don't like the looks of the plastic. Anyone had a bad experience with the plastic tubing? I would replace it with copper, but can't find 1/16 in copper tubing .Stan

Used copper. Lasted long as I had car. One funny thing, it will transmit engine noise like a stethoscope.

Yes. I had plastic line running to an add-on filter on the old "L" Case. The manifold gasket burned out and was puffing on that line until the plastic ruptured spurting oil on the hot manifold. This caused it to smoke as if on fire. My daughter was plowing with it at the time. When she saw the smoke she pulled the clutch which caused it to back-fire and that ignited the oil and tractor started on fire. My cousin ran over and shoveled dirt on fire and put it out with very little damage.

YES! I've had that plastic line crack because the oil runs out of the tube when the engine is off and I think the cold weather may be what cracked it. I was surpised it was used on my Cat but got some adaptors and used a suitable small, lower pressure hydraulic hose instead with the push on type brass connectors. A mechanic suggested I also put a hose clamp on just for safe measure. The air filter indicator uses the same tubing but isn't as critical as the oil pressure line. I do check it every time when I have the side cover off. Dave

This hose will make a good oil line and you can get in smaller sizes from Aeroquip. Hal

As long as you route it safely, away from heat sources, and secure it with zip ties or such, I think you'll find the plastic is a-ok...I have heard of some folks express concern about copper fatiguing from vibration, which of course the plastic will not. If you want it truly "bullet proof", JEGS ( car stuff) sells a steel braided line for oil pressure gauge installation.
FYI, I have also heard of folks going larger diameter tubing, claiming it provided "faster" readings. dunno...

If you have some small diameter copper tubing just adapt up/down to fit your system. Once the system fills up with oil it will establish the correct pressure. There is nothing magic about one size or the other....within reason.

i prefer copper, but have used plastic, i slip either into rubber tubing to avoid vibration--rubs. route away from heat.

As Bob said its 1/8 inch not 1/16 like your thinking. My local O'Reilly's carry s the 1/8 copper tubing and thats where I buy it plus the ferrals for it which are brass

The copper gauge line kits are available at Napa. I got one there for my tractor.

Check with Jerry at EverGreen Restoration. I got some from him when I bought new gauges from him. They are nice guages and a good guy to work with. It is soft copper but I don't know how you could work with hard brake line and make all the twists and turns necessary sometimes. Phone # is 715-635-8629 or 715-520-7876

Heres what I did to my '61 Ford 2000 when I needed to fix the small steel oil line: went to my local garage/parts store and purchased a small piece of steel brake line/tubing (you should use steel because copper is toooo soft) along with two compression unions(one for each end of the splice) and assembeld it... works great and I don't have to worry about plastic problems. An entire line can be purchased and fabricated but you will have to flare and connect accordingly. Hope this helps.

Check your local furnace and heating supplier for small copper tubing... Gene

Plastic oil gauge tubing melts and burns, very well, I migh add, not to mention the fire that occurs when it melts, and releases a stream of oil on a HOT exhaust manifold.

As far as finding a metal replacemen for the tubingt, it is 1/8", NOT 1/16".

I just avoid the whole fiasco, and use an electric gauge.

First Jeep I ever had back in 1976 had a plastic tube. I was driving down the Intersate when I noticed alot of smoke behind me. Thought I better pull over and check it out. When I opened the hood, the under hood blanket was blazing. Some how I threw enough dirt on the thing to put it out. Turned out the plastic oil line had melted and spit hot oil out. I saved the Jeep, my first 4wd. But that oil line was changed out to copper and never had another issue. If you use the plastic be careful where you route it. Mine was to close to the exhaust header.
