My GF has a computer with "ME" in it that is so slowed by stuff running in the background, that it won't completely boot up without freezing up.
Do any of you guys remember the comand to bring up the menue of what is running in the background ,and how much resourses it is using?
I really need to get this thing running so we can get to some files.
I think she needs to keep the help off this thing.
Thanks for any help,
Tim in OR

I don't remember for sure if ME had this option or not, but all the rest of them do. When you turn your computer on, Hold down either the Shift key or the space bar and it will boot up in to safe mode with nothing running other than what the system actually needs. Then run msconfig and shut down everything that has to do with a firewall or antivirus and you should be able to get your files off of it.

The first computer I bought (Cicero with Intel Celeron), I paid extra to upgrade to XP Pro when I bought it...ME was "in" at that time, and XP was the new kid on the block. My next computer (Dell Dimension 3000) came stock with XP Pro. The third computer (my current one, Alienware Aurora 7500) I had to pay extra to get XP Pro...everything was coming with Vista. My laptop, which was given to me about a week after I bought the Alienware, is Vista Home Premium.
Do yourself a favor, and don't go newer then XP Pro. Vista (any itteration of it) only works well on computers built specifically FOR Vista. It'll work on other computers, but not nearly as well, and can often suffer from the same issues as ME suffer(s/ed) from.

I had the same problem, bought the XP home upgrade version (about 100 at Office Max) and loaded it with no problems. I never really had any trouble with ME but figured it was time to come into the 20th century(computer wise).

Microsoft stopped supporting ME in April of 2006.I am having a tough time finding decent antivirus protction for ME,and will be upgrading to XP professional.
I would recommend upgrading to XP.

IMHO, there is no way to keep ME running properly. It was the worst version of Windows ever released.

I'd strongly suggest backup all your data and upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP.

It is liable to crater completely before long.

Task manager (ctrl-alt-del on most Windows versions) shows running processes. MSCONFIG will show the startup list that launches.

start/run/msconfig/startup then uncheck everything and restart your computer.
