Ya now, I filled my tank last Nov 13th. $196 to top it off. They came about a month and a half ago and drove back out. I didnt need any, but I AM on the "will call" well, I looked yesterday and I was at 40%, well, if I made it the coldest 3 months so far with only using 40%(because I think they only fill you to 80-85%), I should be able to finish off the year with the 40% left and my wood heat I have had all winter. Well here I come home and see a gas ticket on the doorknob for 105.4 gallons@$3.119 a gallon, and a flippin $5.99 hazmat fee--$334.73 total, when I didnt even need gas, didnt call for it, didnt want it. In fact I was gonna empty the tank, buy my own and switch to Amerigas because that is who supplies the propane for the chicken barn. So here I sit with a full tank which cost me double what it would have been to fill MY tank next summer when the price is low. Any advice what to tell them when I call them?

How ironic! I just had this same conversation with my propane supplier yesterday. Seems they like to put it to me in two ways. One they always deliver when gas is at its highest whether I need it or not and second they seem to have taken a creative license in price gouging. Two fills ago came home and found delivery ticket in the door, $4.24 a gallon. Went in the house and called supplier and came unglued with the bimbo on the other end of the line. Was told she would have manager call me to discuss the pricing. Never heard back. Get another delivery two weeks later, same thing. Call back to Bimbo, she tells me the manager lowered your price to $2.63. I said you must have me confused with someone else as my latest delivery ticket is at $4.59 a gal. She said "oh no. It says right here your price is $2.63". I told her I've have prices from other suppliers as low as 2.49. "Well that would be below our cost". Yeah right! She calls me back a few minutes later, "we could do 2.59 but that would be it". I told her "good, now send me a revised bill for the last two deliveries at the 'revised' rate." You have to love it. They take advantage of you until you question it. When I get a few things off my plate, I'm going to look into getting rid of them. Don't like being taken advantage of.

Schwans now adding a "fuel Surcharge"
When I complained, the driver said,"but we deliver". I said, "but I still have to go to
town for milk and bread", "Don't stop anymore
if there's a surcharge"

I really cant see the market they have. Must be loyal customer base keeping them alive.
I could see in the old days when it was a big deal to go to town but not now.

If they come driving out just to check your tank like said, then you're clearly on their auto fill list.

If it's got you all bent out of shape cancel service with them. Do it now, or do it when it's warmer.

I am on a "will call". I used to be on the keep fill but they were always here on the highest days, so I switched to I will call when I want gas. We'll see what happens today. Price is too high compared to others.

They come once a month to top mine off,100 galllons @ $1.82 a gallon,3cent discount if payed in 30 days.Thats up from $1.27 two years ago. South Central Ne. John.

I was in St. Cloud a week ago to get some steel for my current shop project- a tile plow. Owner of the shop on Lincoln Av. was complaining about Ferrell Gas- charged him $4.24 for LP. I thought he was stretching it, maybe not. Mine was about $1.89 last fall for the dryer.

Wow how things sure change. I remember being poed that we were off peak electric.
So far we are running $120 mo on the electric heat and about 100 month on the corn for the corn stove. And thats Minnesota.
So I guess we dont have it too bad. Of course I purchased the corn when it was cheap. $2 bushel.
I help a friend unload coal for his furnace. It heats hot water and that runs over to his forced air furnace. Cost him about $4 a day to run it.
I might look into that for my next heating idea.

Not to steal the tread, but where was your friend able to buy coal in Minnesota? Would you mind finding out how much a ton it cost? I would like to have some to bank the woodstove at night. I live about 35 miles south of Mankato.

Hi.
When I asked they said they were getting it in Isanti, MN buying bagged by the 1 ton pallet. Around $300 a ton I think but not possitive on that.
I can get better info next time I talk to them. I just remember thinking hey thats chaper than corn I wonder if my corn stove could burn it.

Think about it.....they was just doing what they contracted to do...auto top off...thats what they did...if you were thinking let the tank run low, maybe you should have give them a call....

Dave,
I had the same problems with them two years ago. I couldn"t see paying them there high prices when I could get it for a $1.24 less a gallon from another company. I could never understand there hazment fees. Should be called harassment fee. Just another way they can get more money out of you. They been loosing a lot of buisness here in my area.
The next problem you"ll have is getting them to remove there tank. Then they will try to charge you rental on the tank. I had to show them the contract that they had drawn up. Reads> (If you us more than XXX gallons a year there is no tank rental charge!!) There sneaky thats for sure.

I seen this LP tank setting in this yard one afternoon and My first thouhts was to decorate Ferrellgas tank the same as that the one in the picture if they didn"t pick it up soon. Should be painted spotted green LOL. Mike

Dave,I'm not far from you in SE MN and we paid 2.05/gal from the local coop for my shop 2 weeeks ago.You WERE on the right track at buying your own tank and gittin' gas wherever ya felt like til they threw a wrench in the plan...

Said it many times. Anyone having ANYTHING to do with Ferrell Gas is gonna get screwed. BTDT

Guys,Lp here in North Alabama will cost right at $4.00 a gallon with tax.We have one company that has bought out all the competition.So we're faced with one company and one price.It has gotten that expensive from a $2.19 quote on at least a 125 gallon purchased since late fall.I installed a electric heat pump in September of 2007.My gas unit was over 15 years old and needed to be upgraded anyway.With the rising oil prices i decided to go all electric.So far it has turned out to be a wise move.Our electric bill has changed,but not enough to complain about.The gas customers around here are hurting because of the almost 100% increase.I have seen posts on here from the Northern states that speak of prices still around 2 bucks a gallon.I can see some variation,but not a 2 buck difference.Someone tell me why.By the way the company down here is owned by Heritage Propane.

I agree, Ferrelgas is after your shorts, don't let them have them. I dropped them several years ago when I found out the local manager had about 4 or 5 price schedules. Which area, which church you attend, where you work, etc. My neighbor is an independant tankwagon and propane jobber, and much easier to deal with.

I think we have 2 different gases going through this board, I am sure that everybody knows the difference though.

Propane guys the 3$+ a gallon is for #2 fuel oil/off-road diesel.

Diesel guys the 2.15$ a gallon is for propane.

I did hear that if you get a nice electric you can save money right now.

I a going to get an outdoor wood boiler this summer to tie right into my fuel oil/boiler system. I have 2 zones, and a pole shed. I think that I will get it all done for the house/shed with one boiler.

I like the chainsaw anyhow.

Then I will keep the fuel oil as back up. I wonder about circulation of the water between the house and boiler if I use the fuel oil one week. I am going to try to skip the glycerol/antifreeze. I am sure there will have to be a circulation pump so the fuel oil boiler can keep the wood boiler water thaw.

By the way we have spent 600$ a month for at least 2 months to heat the 2500+ square feet. (about 2800 I think). Should be a 2500$ heating season.

Put a lock on the cover and only unlock it when you have an order called in. That should fix 'em. Once that driver finds it locked a few times he won't waste his time coming in to look.

Ferrell gas slogan is "We screw our customers over so that they hate us". I sure am glad I dumped them. I sleep better at night knowing that I am not getting ripped off by a bunch of thugs.

Three weeks ago I also received propane from ferrel gas. They were the highest priced outfit in the area. And after the third phone call to them to see if they would do a price match with the other local companys they came up with 2.15 a gallon. Ferrel gas has lost alot of business in this area. 10 miles west of Duluth, mn.

Call them tell them you did not order, so you are not going to pay for it, unless they want to drop the price to what you paid in November less the $5.99 hazmat fee. Then put a padock in the cover so they cannot pump the propane without you there to make sure they only take what they put in and no extra. you could have a little fun, if they come out when you are not there, and cut the lock, call the local sheriffs office and report a theft.

Yes, if you DID NOT CALL FOR GAS they should not have filled your tank. Bull, they were in the area. I would not pay them for the gas, call Amerigas and get a new tank, when you use your ferrlgas call them and tell them to get there $%&*%$% tank out of your yard. If they ask you about paying them, tell them I did not order gas so I guess you were giving it away. By the way I just dropped a new tractor off at your house because I was in YOUR area, you now owe my $72,869 lol JinNY

Dave, I've said this many times here. Dump FG.

They have adopted a policy in the upper midwest of charging $1 + more than the competition. If you call, they will usually price match.

They are trying to liquidate their business up here and are trying to screw as many people possible while they are doing it.

I used to go through the same sort of thing. That's why I finally bought my own 1000 gallon tank and call when I want a fill - usually mid-summer. It always gets filled at the lowest bulk rate since I never call until it's near empty.

Hey, you got charged $3.12 per gallon and nobody's arguing with you? Seems everytime I mention that the National average is around $3.00 per gallon, I get told how wrong I am and gas is "cheap." And yes, I know there are few areas in the midwest where it's pretty low - but that's a National oddity. Some places in Vermont are paying $4 right now and Michigan around $3.30.

They always find a way to get you. Here in Tx , TXU got an increase in electric rates every six months for TWO YEARS. The last one was a 14% rate hike based on "increased fuel cost" (baloney!). I decided to switch to Green Mountain which produces electricity using wind generators. Wind doesn't change in cost, right? Well, when I contacted them, guess what - they jacked their rates up 14% too! I didn't change suppliers.

dont call them and tell them you are going to switch, they might come and get the tank before you are ready. if you have not burned the 40% that was there before they filled it, pump the tank down to 40% and tell them to come and get it. they will probably take the regulators when they get the tank, at least the do here. dont pay for what they just brought and stall until you get your new tank set.

I would tell em pretty much what you just posted.
If you are on will call, it don`t matter if they own the tank or not, you own the gas in it.

You`ll probably get a run around about how they are only in that area every so often, and you came up on their route list so the driver filled you. They may offer to knock the price down alittle or something to make you happy.

If you end up paying for it, and are intent on switching companies, talk to the company your switching to, they probably have a transfer pump and can pump your gas over into their tank, no need to run the tank down. Then you can call Ferrelgas and tell em to come get their tank.

I used to haul propane for Ferrelgas out of Moorehead ten years ago, the managers trick was to hold the price up after the load price dropped and pump all the keep full customers full, thus increasing the margin by quite a little.

I wont buy the "in the area" deal if the feed it to me. That truck is up and down this road everyday. My dad just got into it with them last week when they topped him off and he was at 70%, he is prepaid, but was peeo'd that he had to pay the $5.99 hazmat fee, when he could have made it much longer. He drove into St.cloud and raised a fuss and they dropped the fee for that delivery.

Well if you are on a will call fillup system, they just gave you the propane since you did not ask for it.

But alas that is the way it should work not the way it does. I would just tell them to not deliver any more and you will call them to get the tank when it is empty.

btw I have been using 2 ceramic electric heaters this winter and have saved a over $200 so far this winter on propane costs vs increased electric costs.

We have had several companies here do the same nonsense including Ferrelgas and several others. Empire Gas tried to up my tank rental once to 70$ because I did not use enough gas and Heritage manager told me that because I only used 4-500 gals a year I was on the high side of the priceing. He also told me he didn't need small customers like me. So, I went all electric this year and will probably save at least 300$ this winter. Even at the lower prices I use to rack up 7=800$ a year for propane. Henry

Dave, we deal with them every day,at the store we buy about 600gal to a 1000gal a day and the driver has no idea what we are paying. The computer spits out the bill and every body pays a different amount. I can`t even get the driver to tell me how much to fill my own tank! The hazmat charges bite, but if I come to your place the charge is $4.95 plus $7.75 fuel surcharge and if you need helium mix for stainless steel add anther $19.75 per bottle. BTW if you complain the will adjust the bill.

Ferrellgas is the worst company to deal with in the Michigan thumb area. Ive had things stolen from my property from their Drivers.
