I have a Dodge ram 1500 2wd drive truck with an automatic transmission that likes to shake the truck when I let off the accelerator. Is this something that these trucks are known for and what can be done to correct the problem? The truck had 228,000 miles on it when I bought it but since it's only being used for the farm the milage it had didn't bother me. The previous owner said the trans had been replaced at 150,000 miles. thanks for any help with this problem.

Dave

Thanks for your help. Guess I should of been a little clearer though when I explained the problem it only happens when I release the acclerator a little bit to lose speed. Now I have some places to look at. Since I didn't say earlier the truck is a 1995. Thanks again.

Dave

Come back on this one ,Lot of suggestions but never hear the outcomes, for the little black book.
Worn Tie rods would affect the steering.

The torque convertors in Dodge trannies have been known to fail internally, and cause weird shakes, and, likely, noises.

I'd put that SOMEWHERE in the middle of the list of possibilities!

A quick check would be to pull the shifter into neutral when you let off the gas, if the shake is still there, you pretty much eliminated the trans.

I would also suspect a ujoint. Don`t do the thing of going under there and trying to wiggle the drive shaft. Take it off so you can move the ujoints thru there whole range of motion. I can`t tell you how many times I`ve found a siezed up ujoint causing different vibration issues. Good Luck BW

Check the universal joints or trunnions as some call them,on your drive line, near gearbox and at the differential.Pressure on will tighten.power off will flop around.
He said the trans not the final drive so was he referring to gearbox.

Like others have said, there's a lot of things it could be, but I'd start with a look at the driveshaft u-joints and the tie-rod ends as the most common failures that would show up as the problem you're having.

I've had a similar problem with my 96' Dodge Ram this past spring and had to replace my tie rod ends.

I'm more use to the 4x4's myself, but I have heard that a warped brake rotor will also cause a lot of vibration too.

well, there sure is alot of places to go with this question, but let me try to help--first, check u-joints-n drive line-- diff. sometimes drive train kinda stays in place in forward motion, yet goes nuts on de-acceleration-[u-joints,diff pinion, carrier bearing if used--nope, this isn't common for trans as faras i know.--we could go on to trans-engine mounts--etc-ect-sounds like trans is newer than rest of truck--milage sure leaves a lotta other places to look--good luck

I have a 1500 that wanted to shake at times. While balancing wheels. They found one rim on rear bent. Could not see the bent in site but on the balancer you could. Use a stick to hold to its side and one could see the rim going in and out. Replaced it and took care of my problem on that. Another problem I found on Dodge was the drag link bar in front. It makes a truck to all kinds of funny shakes at times. Don't know if this helps you. But gives you another thing to look at besides the tranny.

One other thing.. you did not say what year you have. But Dodge is bad for Vacum lines. If one is broken or lose. This to caused lots of problems on them.

Personally have changed rotors and eliminated vibration. Thought I had bad tires or unbalance.
