Lil House heater / wood furnace

I'm looking into getting an outside woodstove to heat the house with. I seen these Lil house heaters on ebay. It take the air out of your house, goes around the firebox and then blows it back into the house. I was wondering if anyone has seen or used one of these and how well it works. An outdoor boiler is a little out of my price range. Should I save up my money for now for an outdoor boiler, or would the Lil house heater do a good job. I have ranch house of about 1100 square feet. Any opinions welcome.
Thanks

Mak, I have a Lil House heater. I installed it this year. It does set outside and blows warm air into the house. The cold air return works well. I have a 1400 (approx) sq. ft. home. I have used ZERO propane this year.
I'm not as knowledgeable as T-Bone, but my heater works. As with all things, it's not perfect.

Hi Randall,

I didn't mean to sound like I was a know it all but I figured this was the mfg looking to push his heater on the forum and I really didn't want to get into a long debate with him of the short comings of his unit/installation.

I use one a wood furnace now in reply to mak, 02-10-2008 14:49:35
I have an outside wood burner. Air does travel into the house in the fresh air side and returns in the other fresh air duck. Works great and when the ice storm hit here in December. No electrity was to be had and was out of it for a week. Now the furnace has it's own fan that is electric. So I had a generator and just tapped into the fans wires with extenstin cord. Worked great and we kept warm. Now I also have a converter for 12 volt to electrity. Use a Marine batter for power of it. This is for big emergency like out of gas for generator and don't want to freeze over night my old butt. lol So I can just run a cord from the converter to the wiring on fan.

This thread appears to be nothing more than a ad for "lil House Heater".

As too the heater? WOW where to start! There's just so many "wrong" things about the installation that I could write a book.

The website should be labeled "how not install a wood heater"

That makes me wonder if the firebox design is very efficient?

Please check your local building codes and besure to show them the pictures of this guys quality installation. I'm sure you'll get a few comments from the county building engineer and local fire marshall.

Makes me wonder if the UL listing is just not the fan componets that has passed UL testing and not the heater unit?

Hi mak,

Then I owe you a apology as it sure appeared that way.

I already gave you my opinion of the unit. That doesn't mean there's not another good unit made out there. Wood is a four heat source, once cutting, once splitting, once stacking, once loading :) plus you get to go out in the cold each night to load the unit. Have you thought about building your own from stone and mortar? How about the Russian firelplace designs?

If I was going to install a outdoor burner, I'd atleast want a all nighter sized box with a indoor damper control rod.

Depending on how the rooms are laid out, some times a return fan system works better than a supply fan system.

Have you considered using solar HW heat? For under a $1000 in parts you can heat from the sun.

Well, one of our neighbors had a outside heater which fed hot air through a duct into the house. Also fed fire into house when something malfunctioned. Firecheif said he"d never seen a house go up so fast!

House near here had a hot air duct going into the house- determined that it dried out the wooden wall..... .which started the fire and burned the house down.

I use a smaller wood furnace than that to heat my 1400 sqft home. But mine's in the basement.

I think you'd lose some heat in the ductwork outside, since it doesn't look to be insulated.

And it looks like it'd be easily removed in the off-season, so why involve your insurance company in the decision-making?

Speaking of insurance... They wanted to know how mine was installed, who did it, when, what the chimney looked like, and how close to the walls it was. They also asked about double-walled pipe anywhere it goes through a wall. And that was State Farm I was dealing with. So I think they should be pretty fine with this installation.

I have an outdoor wood furnace that I bought new in 2005 that I am thinking of selling. I was going to wait until spring, but I could use my inside wood stove if it was something that you wanted right away. I am using it now, just filled it 15 minutes ago. I would sell mine for $1750. I live in MN if you are anywhere nearby and have any interest.

Have you looked into a corn/pellet burner. Nice heat. Rightnow it is 72F in my house and outside it is -2F. I only have to load the pellet burner about every 8 hours at medium speed. And I have a 2300 sq. foot rance house.

72 F equals 24 celsius. The news on the air waves is 66 F or 19 Celsius is the optimum temperature. Which it is in my kitchen at the moment, the difference being it's 91F outside in the sun.
