Hydraulic oil won't attack rubber because it doesn't get the impurities in it that engine oil does and it also has conditioners in it for the rubber. Engine oil will attack rubber parts, depending on the material, because of the detergents that are put in it and the acids that get deposited in it due to combustion.

When I was in the Navy, they used K-Y jelly to lubricate O-rings that would be used in a water system. Amazingly, it was Deck department, and not engineering that kept most of that lubricants, such as that "On Hand", though I have no idea what O-rings those Boatswain Mates ever had to install.

Why do they use o-rings to seal hydrolic fittings?

On the Cs I have been working on for the last couple years I use Dawn dish shop and it has worked just fine. I was told that about 2 or 3 years ago when I did my first re-sleeve job on a C and have used it ever since and so far never had a problem with the o-rings

Not only that they don't make the O rings out of the same thing as they did at that time as well.
I use gun grease.

Do not use grease, engine oil, petroleum jelly or anything else with petroleum in it, it will attack the rubber and you could possibly have an O-ring fail. Dish soap will work or like others said special lubes.

I think they are far enough into the bore to avoid the crank oil but that doesn't explain how they can last in a hydraulic cylinder. I know I have been told that petroleum eats rubber though. Will have to research it some more.... hate when I contradict myself!

Those rings are made of neoprene and not rubber. Oil does not hurt them. Liquid dish soap is as good as anything.
