Piston rings

A while back one of my tractors siezed a piston, skuffed up the cylinder walls real good. This is a very old motor, and it had no reason for this to happen. It didn"t over heat, and had plenty of oil. As I think back I used the three piece oil rings last time I rebuilt the engine ( two oil ring sets pre each piston) I am wondering if this new type oil ring didn"t keep enough oil on the cylinder walls? The original rings were all one piece. Stan

This a little Ford that came originally with 4 plain rings? Sometimes knurling piston skirt helps keep oil film on cylinder walls, plain rings let a little oil seep up. Possible on some rings to put them in upside down and get dry side and seizures. RN .
