Hi,
What is the first tractor you ever drove? The first one I drove was my Dad's 1933 Farmall F-12 on my Dad's lap. It is easy and fun to drive. The second tractor I drove and learned to drive myself was my 1943 Farmall H (before it was mine). I fell in love with the Farmall H and traded my stuck Moline U for the H when I was around 6 or 7 yrs old. I'm 15 now and have drove other tractors, but the Farmall H is my favorite! I finished the Farmall H restoration September 2006.

Andy.

1936 chevy [doodle bug]about 10 years of age. someone hit it one night and rolled it over in our front yard totaled out, neighbor bought it shortened, cut roof off,two transmissions, and a truck rearend. My first thing I did was pull a harrow after that I raked hay,and straw shutteled wagons. Two years later I got a real job working for my uncle for a dollar a day on a ford 8N

By myself, CA Allis. Age 6 or so, around 1960. Dad started it in 1st gear, I drove it across the field, he drove another tractor alongside and met me on the other end so I didn"t tear down a gate post! Remember the thrill of it today...Dad really trusted me! He was/is a great teacher, but at 81 is slowing down a lot.

As I got older, remember thinking I was really a big kid when my boots were wide enough to cover both brake pedals on Dad"s 1950 M. Raked many an acre of hay on the M, but Armstrong Power Steering didn"t work very well for a skinny 10 year old. Walter

It was an E-3 Co-op in the summer of 57 and I was 6 y/o dont know what year the Co-op was we only spent 2-4 wks each year on my Grandpas farm, My Uncle Bud taught me how to drive it, the following year I got to pull a hay baler and wagon with the new WD45 and pulled loaded wagons to the barn and empty ones back to the field with the Co-op I dont think I did a very good job with the baler cause I remeber my uncle hollerin to watch where i was goin quite a few times and then I was "transfered" to the Co-op but it was all great fun for me.

Mine was a 1955 Ford 860, I was about 3 on my granpa's lap. By my self was on same tractor at about 10, I'm 23 now. My Grandpa is gone, but I still have those fond memories and the tractor ( I use it all the time). I sure do miss him! He taught me a lot.

Dad's Super A plowing snow.I was driving and he was standing on the drawbar holding the cultivator lift arms.He was giving me instructions .I remember this like yesterday. He told me not to slam into the pile but to pick up the plow as I was going into it so it would push the snow up.Me,being 6-7 years old ,go slamming into the pile in second or third gear.I slid forward into the steering wheel and just about lauched him over me.He was not too impressed.Other than that it was Grandpa's H picking up hay.

Hard to remember back that far but I think it was my Dad's 1939 AC B in the Garden behind the House at Union ILL. Pulling a small Disc working down the fresh plowed ground. This was in about 1943 maybe and I was 5 going on 6 years old. I remember riding by him on the seat and he moved over and let me steer it and suddenly he cimbed behind me and rode the Drawbar several times around the Garden and then he stepped off and let me go by myself. I did not know he had stepped off until I turned at the end and saw him waiting for me at the other end. I have a lot of memories from those days and most of them my Dad was involved. My Dad passed away in 1981 and left a big void in my life.

I wasn't big enough to keep it between the rows of hay bales and every once in a while I'd run up onto one. But I could throw the hand clutch and Dad would get on and back me off the bale. Then away we'd go, picking up more hay.

Cockshutt 30. Dad put it behind grandpa's house and we were filling the loader with trash. Sat there for several days, so I hopped on and tried it out. I own that tractor now. Special beefed-up bucket for moving snow.

Ford 8N- it was the only tractor my dad ever had, during 10 years of dairying into the early '60's, then until he sold it in about '95. I started driving truck in the hayfields when about 8 years old, but mom was deathly afraid of tractor rollovers, so I didn't drive the tractor until about age 10, and I'm not sure she knew about it even then. Unlike most of you and your "family" tractor, I was never really attached to it- when dad sold it, he asked me if I wanted it, and I passed.

Fordson mounted on rubber. You would have to make a list of projects because if you turned it off or stalled it, it wouldn"t start again untiled it cooled off.

Riding on Grandpa's lap and 'driving' since before I can rememeber - '53 Jubilee, '65(?)Commander 6000, both Farmall Super H's (mainly the one with the wide front), '75 7000. First on my own was the Jubilee, summer of '79, raking hay (I turned 6 that July).

I'm going to say the infamous JD 2010 wide front with loader, before I was old enough to go to school. It was parked next to a barn in a lower area on a slight incline, I was in the seat and knocked it out of gear, it rolled a few feet and stopped, in front of some tribal elders, their jaws hit the ground as I remember. That was my first ride I think, though I do remember being co-pilot on that one a many times, watching my father clear the neighbors driveway, took a ride along the power lines up to a hill to watch a big brush fire, and remember when the hired help put it up on the 2nd floor of the old dairy/hay barn, one side was a hay mow starting at grade, the other was a full 2nd floor, they got some speed off the hill behind the barn, not sure how they did that and how they got it down, tractor was unscathed. Eventually he got rid of the 2010, not sure why, especially having a loader on it. Then came this old D7 caterpillar, now that was really something else, nice big seat for a co-pilot, always hitched a ride on it, the sound of that low rpm 4 cyl. could be heard echoing out of the valley, start up was really cool with the pony motor, and the town was thankful for my father punching a hole through a giant drift that filled the rock cut that the state road passes through, I still have it + another that is a nice low hour tractor, I did not know whether to laugh or cry when I unloaded the 2nd one 6 years ago, before it got here I had to read up on the starting procedure and make a cheat sheet for the shift pattern, just hearing that diesel come to life brought back some great memories.

Then there was a new place to explore, my father bought a log time Ford dealership, lot full of blue tractors, huge shop and parts dept with an even older wood framed garage shop, also was Mobil gas station. Now this was cool, that older shop was kind of abandoned, unused, the old wood drawers, bench, old tools, and all the old NOS parts in the attic. 3 brothers worked there as mechanics, and I can remember the days when I was there all day, no school, summer or what might be, having lunch at the back of the shop, all the tractors being worked on, the lot full of new tractors etc. Another tantalizing fact was that I went to school directly across the street/road and until I was out of that wing, I could see across and want to be there instead of school! The best was going on out on a run with the tilt cab C series ford flatbed which they built in the shop, and being allowed to operate the winch levers, and tilt bed, flag traffic etc. I have a few artifacts with the dealership's name on it, an original ford tractors equipment pam clock that hung behind the parts counter, the canvas banner that we hung on our display at the fair, some old dealer stickers, porcelain thermometer with the dealers name on it, work bench in Ford blue and a big ole Columbia vice and many other priceless (to me) items. Town historian found a picture of the place and published in the towns history book, it had a row of new 8N's out front(maybe 9N's have to look closely) all had side sickle mowers, and the dearborn logo painted on the side of the building. 5 years ago a 640 turned up for sale that had our dealer sticker on the one armed loader, a long time friend who is like a brother bought it, if he sells it, I'm going to have to buy it, that was a cool find, my father remembers having 2 of these on the lot.

For me, I don't think it would be possible to not have an appreciation for tractors, equipment and the agriculture community, as a kid it's all most of us knew around here growing up, that changed quickly as future generations missed out on all the farming, things have changed a lot since those days.

An Allis B
Grandpa used to let me ride around with him from the time I was little. That double wide seat made for both of us being comfy.
About the time I turned 8 or so he started letting me drive it in first gear.
I have a lot of memories of that tractor.
Grandpa loved to blow stumps out of the ground with dynamite.
He"d dig under the stump, set a stick or two and add the cap and fuse. He was old and couldn"t run fast by then so he"d have the Allis close by and running when he"d light the fuse. Then he"d clamber up on it and skedaddle out of there in high gear.
I"d stand on the drawbar and hang on to the seat back. That Allis always seemed incredibly SLOW as we were hurrying away from the blast site.
Grandpa would laugh and chuckle like a big kid when the blast went off and dirt and wood rained down.
Afterwards he"d be in a jolly mood and let me drive the tractor.

We had a 1939 Farmall M and a team of horses, so I drove the horses first and then the tractor. Boy, what memories that brings back. Making loose hay etc. I remember having to learn how to go around a corner with the horses and try to keep the loader on the windrow. You young guys don't know what you missed. Ha!

If you mean alone,I'm torn between saying an 8N Ford hauling maunure or a Massey Harris Pony plowing snow. Dad bolted a block to the clutch pedal on the Pony so I could reach it at the age of about 5,but I remember I could stand up and push the clutch on the Ford. First one I plowed with was an Oliver 66. Dad got off to pick up a stone and told me to plow on down to the end and bring it back. I was maybe 7 or 8. Ironic isn't it,that I was just thinking yesterday about plowing snow with that Pony while I was plowing the SAME driveway almost 50 years later. Talk about being in a rut! I need to get a life!

First was a R MM with a hand clutch at age 7.
If I would pitch the spreader full after school I could take it out with the R to unload it.

Second day dad said the spreader has to be at least level full before going out.

I guess 10 or 12 pitch fork fulls wasn't considered a load.

Second was a ZB MM.

Dad was riding on the back of the ZB when we stopped for a gate. I pushed in the clutch we stopped he got off, to open the gate. I let out the clutch and went thru the gate before he got to it.

He asked what the heck I was doing. I said I let the clutch back out like he always did. He told me you have to take it out of gear before letting the clutch back out. I guess I never saw him do that. I thought it was kinda like the hand clutch were you could leave it in gear and as long as the clutch wasn't moved it would stay there. Dumb kids.

1939 WC. Serial #77717- still looking for it. The "47 had a hard clutch, and Dad had put an 18 inch extension handle on the "39 foot clutch when my older brother was 5 years old, along with a plank platform to stand on. Still the same when I started driving for bale loading at 8-9.

I'm thinking first drove the JD B. I would stand up and my uncle sat on the seat to keep me out of trouble. First solo I think was the JD H. Didn't give it enough gas and stalled it out.

I still have both of them.

I was always riding on daddy's lap since the time I could walk. He would be for having me steer while he blew his nose or some excuse. as I got older I sat on the fender and helped watch what machine he was pulling. I don't remember when dad quit going along. When we took delivery of a new Allis Chalmers D15 series II in 1964 I was 10 years old and the dealer showed me how to operate it cuz dad was still in the house taking his after dinner nap. When dad came out to go to the hay field he drove the old Ferguson and I drove the new Allis. Talk about being 10 feet tall!!!! Yeah, I learned to milk cows the same way. I'd be in the stable and dad would say "here, Howard, watch these milkers for a minute" and then he would go out of the barn supposedly on some "errand" By the time he returned I would have several cows milked. That same tactic never worked with my sister. As the cows got milked she would take the milkers off and set them on the floor and then wait for dad.

The first tractor I ever drove was a '54 Super H, sometime around '88-'89. My mom bought it for me to use on the family farm that she had inheirited. I drove it from the farm it was bought from about 10-12 miles back to the 'hood where I lived until I could haul it out to the farm. Kind of different taking a tractor on a road trip the first time I ever drove one!!

I may have one of the newest tractors on the list with a '79 John Deere 950. My dad bought it new about a week after I was born. I didn't realize that until now... wish he had kept in instead of trading it in for a larger tractor.

Very first tractor I ever drove was my grandfathers 1st "new" tractor, a farmall super H. I think I was 8 or 9. That tractor was auctioned off when the uncle sold out to keep the bankers happy in the 80's. Was purchased by a neighbor. When I recently tried to locate it, I discovered it was "restored by the Foley FFA and sold. Cant find any one that knows where it is today. First JD I ever drove was a 49(?) "B", that tractor was the 1st one also purchased new by an old neighbor, it is still sitting in his sons machine shed, he has passed. He has a great grandson who at the age of 7 already is staking his claim on it.

1948 Allis B, now sitting in my barn restored. Dad traded a 1938 B for it and a new mower & plow with $675 boot. The one row cultivator made 20 acres of corn look like 200. My first drive was pulling the feed & water wagon to feed our 2000 chickens on pasture. Ran over a few water pails and feed troughs before I realized the wagon wsa wider than the tractor. I did help Dad become a much better tinsmith, though. Also ran over the dogs tail one time too.

Speaking of breaking things. Well guys I grew up in the cities, and the wifes family only introduced me to dirt - IE: tractors, farming and the whole thing just 6 years ago (I am now 30yrs old, and have a hobby farm, 20, and selling the horses! wahoo!). So nothing better than smashing out a fairly new pole shed door with the top of a Farmall 856. I fixed the tractor (a muffler, clamps and a rain cap). And I got the door guy out and fixed the pole shed door.

I really have fell in love though with - whatever, probably making hay - in the last 5 years. I have learned how to sand blast, paint, plant plow, pasture management, I have learned how to correctly clean carburetors, and well as you all know way too much to list.

Pathetic though first time really on a tractor at - must have been 23 years old.

Just enough "green" left in me do some silly things. I stacked a wagon 10 high 3 years ago into a PYRAMID shape. I should scan the photo in - looks pretty crazy I am standing on the top bale - tailored up to a single bale in the middle. Yeah that was interesting they have hills on the in-law's farm.

1952 MM ZA, mowed and raked a lot of hay with this tractor. We also used it for cultivating some with a two row cultivator. Tractor was still in the family till my nephew sold it to the scrap yard. I was sick when I heard that. In my high school years I pulled this tractor at the local county fairs won several first and seconds on it.

I"m surprised that you couldn"t push in the clutch on a John Deere "A" at age 9 or 10. That clutch must have been set tighter than necessary for any normal work.

A Ferguson 20 pulling a hay sled in about 1950. I would have been about 6 at the time. It had 4x4 runners with #9 wire looped a couple times through a hole drilled sideways and hooked to a chain. Dad showed me how to do the clutch, but I jumped it and pulled the wire out. TWICE! I finally got the hang of it and was I grinnin from ear to ear. Not sure dad was. LOL. I'm still driving a TO-20 with an overdrive. Love it. :)

This one when I was 7 years old. That was 31 years ago and Daddy was right there beside me kinda standing and squating on the axle housing just in case I messed up and hit something. When we made it out ot the field, he told me, "Now just go out there and ride around, but stay on the flats for now. When you get older Ill let you pull a plow or something.", and then jumped off the back. He would take a peek out of the side of the barn every now and then to check on me, and I drove that thing for 2 hours.Im here to tell you, 1st gear and half throttle seemed awful fast to me.

The first tractor I ever drove was a 1959 Massey Ferguson MF50 LPG Row Crop with a bulldozer blade on front. That was in 1973-74ish. I was 5 or 6 years old then. That tractor is completely restored and in the barn today. It is the last farm tractor my grandpa bought new. My two daughters are fourth generation of our family to spend time on that tractor.
The first tractor I ever plowed with is a 1972 Massey Ferguson 1100 with Hinson Weather Cab pulling a 15 foot Richardson sweep plow. That was in 1975 at 7 years old. Would still like to find that tractor. It sold at auction on August 8th, 1989 in western Oklahoma.

Came home from school and the brand new to us 1949 8N was waiting. I wish I still had it. It was traded in on the 135 with a live PTO. It had a factory type pipe roll cage and I think it may have had a loader at one time. I can't remember. It was a one owner tractor in almost mint condition! My dad knew all the people at the legislature grounds as he sold equipment to them. They told him the tractor was coming up at the Gov't. sealed bid yard. The last 10 years the tractor was used was only to pull a fertilizer spreader. That tractor started easy in the winter and I swear the narrower back tires pulled through the snow better than the wider ones on the 135. The front tires seemed a larger size than some of the really narrow ones I've seen on N series tractors. Maybe bigger rimswere optional? Dave

When I asked about it, my uncle said I could take it home. She sits in my barn out in california now. I got her running. Still crank start, still loud. My uncle passed last year. but I can still see him standing in front of me trying to hold that old tractor back as I headed straight for his prize plum tree.

2. Farmall M
3. Farmall 504
4. Farmall/International 856
5. Moline 335
6. Moline M602
7. Ingersoll-Rand S185 (bobcat)

Nothing bigger than that, and I have always been Impressed!!!

The Farmall B and M are really a treat, but the Farmall B is really handy. Pulls loaded wagons some, and Mows like heck. The B has the tightest motor of any of them listed above (besides the bobcat)

I got a late start... The first tractor I got to drive was an 1190 Case feeding the cows on a friends dairy.

Got some time after that on everything from a little Yanmar to a JD 4440 till I got my first tractor of my own in 1997, an IH 574D. All the good old 20's & 30's iron started trickling in after that. 7 now... about to be 8.

This 53 Super M. It wasn't under the picker at the time tho. I was riding with dad on the SH to get the SM and two loads of hay on the far side of a field. Dad started me out on the SM in 1st gear with one load and he drove the SH with the other load across the field then hopped on and took over on the other end of the field. Can't remeber my age but I couldn't push in and hold the SM's clutch yet. I still remeber that day like it was yesterday. That SM was quite a machine to me then. Funny he didn't put me on the SH.

Thanks Andy, My dad and uncle farmed together and they bought it new the spring of 1954, a left over 53. They wore out 2 mounted pickers, a mounted 4 row cultivator and a 3 bottom plow before bigger tractors took over the harder work. I still pick a few loads of corn every fall. It still has the warrenty wires on the govener and has never has been overhauled. The rear tires are also original as they were never run on paved roads. Dad was always proud of it and had it painted in the 70's but it now needs a new paint job and some new seals but it still runs good and burns little oil.

Setting in the seat steering with Dad on the drawbar while spreading manure 1942 or 43 a Farmall B going by a picture Mom took. Drive without anyone on the tractor for short distances in the field with my grand father coaching was his Farmall H in 1945 or so. Drove tractors thru gates for Dad at chore time around that time. Started working ground by myself in 1946 on a Allis Chalmers C with Dad in the same field on an other tractor.

An AC WC that belonged to the neighbor in 1944 when I was 12 years old. We did not get a tractor on our fram until 1951. a 1940 JD B. Dad liked horses but as his sons grew up and left for military duty he had to give in and get a tractor.

First farm tractor I drove was a MF135 with Allied Loader, on my neighbors knee. I was about 4, I'd guess? Several years later, that tractor spent several years in my back yard, and I became VERY fond of it..splitting wood, RotoTilling my garden, moving logs and rocks and such. It was my neighbors tractor, though, and when he got posted to Nfld, the tractor got sold.

The next tractor I drove was the 1952 Super-A that TractorSam restored beautifully. He let me plow with it. It cost me a nearly-new pair of jeans, but it was worth it. Shortly after, he talked me into buying his 1954 Super-C, and I got a chance to drive it through his land-ladys yard once before we tore the sheet metal off, removed the head, and started workin' on er.

You mean drove or sat on and steered it. The first one I steered was either a Farmall H or M or a super of one of those. The first one I ever drove would have been an AC-B or JD-B not sure which of those 2. And on any of those you hadn't even been thought of let alone born when I drove any of them

The funny thing is, I don't know the model # of the first tractor I drove.

It was a MF industrial loader tractor with a shuttle. When I was 4 yo my Dad and cousins would get me on it and put it in 1st gear and I was to steer it around the field while they picked rocks into the bucket. When the bucket was full someone would jump on the tractor (usually while is was still moving) and drive it to the fence and dump the bucket then reset me where we left off.

I was probably only going 1 mph but I thought I had the world by the tail!

The little MF industrial was used up and traded early in my childhood and was replaced with an IH 484 which I drove the snot outa (as did the rest of the family) handling round bales. The IH is now gone too.
