Caterpillair,9 year on grain truck,7 years on 4440 tractor and replace 4230 lasted year with new Cats after 11 years on Cat batteries. Worse is Wally World can't get warranty replacement. They put on charger, test it and say still good!uhuhgh

for me here in wisconsin, strong box hold up the best. second best for me is everstart. then exide. i would go with strong box for colder climate. just be sure to keep the water levels up on them!

Where in WI are ya' about. I think that all the batteries are about the same until you get into that fancy battery like optima, and some others.

Yes and no. All lead acid batteries are pretty much the same, but like it was explained to me one time while with my brother shopping for a battery, it depends on the quality.

Every battery manufacturer has atleast 2 different batteries, the economy ones that are the same physical size, yet they have fewer plates and can produce less CCA and crank time than their premium batteries that have more capacity.

With that said, we'd ussually go to Sam's club and get a Champion battery. ONe in my truck is atleast 6 years old and still going strong. I'd venture to guess it's 7 years old. One in our 285 Massey is probably 8 years old and is still going strong too.

Well, its not a mtter of what I like, but what I have to get. My wifes Buick and van take a ceratin type of battery that only Dephi makes, or that anyone around here carries. Im sure there are others aho make the same thing, but noone has any other brand for these 2 autos. I refuse to put another set of Optimas in my truck, or anything else, since they left me stranded not once, not twice, but 3 times. Blame it on my truck, but its not the trucks fault, 01 Powerstroke, currently running 2 AC Delcos and have been since the Optima failures. Most of my tractors have the DUralast Gold in them, havent repalced one in a few years, but have had one that kept dieing, so I just unhook the cable.I know thats a wiring problem somewhere, Im thiking the alternator.

Orbital or Optima. I'll never buy another lead acid battery as long as I can get these. Got 5 in service now and any lead acid battery that goes down will be replaced with AGM. No more cleaning battery post and replacing parts that got eat up with battery acid.

Rural King here sells them that have thier name on them, don't know who makes'm for them. They are cheaer than Wally World and last as long as any I have found. They come with a five year warrenty, I have one in 3 tractors, 4 trucks, and my work car. I have had to take one back that had a year left on it in the last 6 or 7 years. In my mind they are the best deal I can find around here, like I said I don't know who makes them, they are just cheap and work for me.

I used to swear by Interstate batteries, until I had to replace a new one in my Oliver 1550 3 times in one year. It was on warranty, but it still was a PITA to replace. Since then, I've replaced batteries in my pick-ups, and I used Advanced Auto batteries. They work fine, and they even put them in for you for free, not that it's hard to do, but hey, if they want to put it in for me, I won't argue.

See if you have a local battery supplier, batteries are not worth a hoot unless you get service if you have a bad one, there was a duiscussion a few years back, and Interstate kinda rated at the bottom in customer service if you have a battery go bad prematurely. Check your local Deere dealer, JD batteries used to be good batteries. I would not buy a Walmart battery, not that they are bad, just don't like their business practices. They just are there to see how bad they can saturate the market and put local puople out of business.

In defense of Walmart...they provide tons of jobs to unskilled people and they don't run any businesses out...people do that. They shop Walmart and not the others. So...what do you expect will have to a small and ineffecient business?

In my car and gasoline vehicles I normally used whatever is cheapest at Walmart. My diesel pickup has a pair of John Deere batteries in it. They were 5 year batteries and thats about what it looks like I will get out of them. Tractors, I've used NAPA, Deka, etc (all Fords with the long battery, both posts on the same end). Nothing has given me more than the minimal warranty service except the genuine CNH batteries.

Nothing written here can be substantiated. Batteries are manufactured by a very few producers and different labels are put on them. No one here can scientifically test a battery brand nor will that result be any good in a year or so. Things change rapidly, specs change, manufacturers change, brands change. All you'll get is one person's opinion with one brand which has given him good performance. My experience has been great with Sam's batteries so what am I going to say? That they're cheap and bad?

By the any battery with a high CCA and good warranty and good price and forget about getting the "best" because no one here can tell you what the "best" is.

Repair shop put a Napa battery in my pickup in the winter of 1999. I replaced it with another NAPA due to its age last year and moved the old battery to the tractor. It finally went bad or I ruined it setting it on the ground. Not sure what happened to it, but it finally failed after 8 years of hard use. Got another one just like it, hope I don't have to drive that truck long enough to figure out if it was as good as the first. Had that darned truck since 95 and am kinda getting tired of it... Aaron

Well, I think a lot depends on what you are putting the battery in. With you tractor, I wouldn't put one of the walmart batteries in. There is going to be a lot of vibration and you need a battery that was designed for the vibration. I know that batteries from New Holland and Case IH, they pour the epoxy in the bottom, and then put the plates in. Many other manufactures pour the epoxy in from the top. Exide does build their batteries. But, you really get what you pay for. My uncle had a buick and the battery died in it. Well, when he took the battery out, it was the original GM battery. Well, that battery was 8 years old. He took it right back to the GM dealer and said give me one just like it.
OEM parts are built for the application. Each OEM specifies engineering standards.

Sorry, New Holland, Case and GM do not make their own batteries and how does pouring in epoxy in first make something better than pouring epoxy in later? For all you know, those batteries could be made by Interstate or Exide and relabled. Heck, even Interstate and Exide could be one and the same.

Because I work for CNH Parts & Service, the Parts and service support arm of CNH (Case New Holland). I have been to the Exide branches in my parts sales territory. I have spoken and visited with CNH engineers. I have a copy of the poster showing the battery construction. The epoxy goes in first so the plates are in securely. This way you don't have the plates moving. There is extra material in the sidewalls and structural integrity built into the case so it can withstand the jarring that the battery will take in an offroad condition.

If you had issues, you should have brought them up with the dealer that sold the battery to you. We have warranty procedures on these issues. It is always easier to trash the product rather than address the real issue. Most battery problems lie somewhere else in the electrical system, but the battery is to blame.

Defend a poor product if you wish, but I've had my last Exide battery until I see that they have sufficiently changed such that they're worth buying.
I'm not complaining about the service I got from NH. NH has been very good about standing behind the battery with replacement to the limits of the free replacement warranty, but once it gets to pro-rating, it's a waste of time for me. NH's pro rated warranty is nothing more than a scam to keep you buying their batteries. Once you've done the math you figure out that it only takes about 20% more life (at most) from a good battery and you're ahead of anything that you could get from NH's warranty anyway.
I've certainly had a couple over the years that were due to charging system issues, and NH backed the dead battery anyway. I can't complain there. What I complain about is the simple fact thay every single 4DLT I've had expires in less than 5 years without fail (usually the first cold snap of the 4th winter), without any deep cycling, or excessive cycling of any sort. You just find them stone dead on a cold morning. Game over. Gr31 maintenance free batteries will fare about a year better than the 4DLT's on average.
I've had the cheaper 'fleet branded' Exides that do about 2 years.... compared to the Delco's that I've had that ran for 14 years in a dozer and now going on 5-6 years on the second set. I haven't had the rest of them long enough to see how the new ones will hold up, but the truck has had a set for 4 years that are still strong.

Motorcraft OEM batteries have also been very strong performers here with life spans from 8-10 years on several (all that we've had actually).

Right now I'm content to stay with Delco since I can get them close to home for 30% less money that NH branded batteries, and I don't have a NH dealer closer than 200 miles anymore... so there's really no incentive there to buy from them.
Again, the problem is Exide, not NH from my perspective. I've had poor service from Exide batteries where Delco's are now giving good service....

I like Caterpillar batteries. A little pricey but very long lasting. Only exception is the dual post auto battery(has top and side posts), they had problems with that one. I have a CAT battery in a tractor that is nearing 14 years and still going strong. It is even a maintenance free battery. Avoid Napa batteries. My Napa store won't even sell Napa batteries. Thats how much confidence he has in them.

MY mothers first cousin is dead and gone now but his job at Excide in Manchester Iowa was to drive the forklift with the correct stencils in the tub.

I was at a funeral yesterday and visited one of my kin folk that works there he said pretty much the same thing. JD batteries are made there, farm fleet and alot more.

Another friend that used to work there redid the new batteries that failed after a very short time. I found this pretty interesting that the very first proceedure was to actualy drop the battery flat on the work bench. This jared any small chunks of lead that had laid across the plates, thus setteling them to the bottom.

Kin folk said JD can afford to stand behind their batteries because they cost double in the first place.

I had a JD 112 lawn mower that after eleven years I decided to replace the interstate battery just because it was to old. Often times wish I would have just seen how long it could have lasted.

I buy the cheap ones, 3 tractors - car - pickup and lawnmower, and I have found that whenever I have a battery problem = most times something else caused it. perhaps a bad ground or a generator/alternator going bad.

Walmart or Sam's....about the cheapest. Don't care about the brand. I put in the biggest I can with the best warranty. Tractor has had a 3 year replacement guaranteed battery in it now for 2 years. Both cars also. I've never had an issue with a battery. I do understand that any battery brand can short a cell but, on average, batteries aren't up there to worry about. If it fires your machine, last it's rate life, has a decent warranttee....get the cheapest.

I like any brand of AGM batteries. Optima is one but there are others that are just as good.Try some marine batteries(they start some big diesels) I had them in my boat for many years before I sold it and no problems. You can discharge them to nothing, let em sit several months and charge them up like new. Just to see whats available try Westmarine.com. Many other industrial battery sellers have them also. Will last many years.
